Eppendorf ThermoMixer Fxx and TMFxx: abbreviation for Eppendorf ThermoMixer F0.5/
F1.5/F2.0/FP.

2.2 Assemblies

All devices consist of the following assemblies:

• Chassis
• Upper part of housing
• Drive, consisting of motor and stabilizer links
• PCB control
• PCB motor control (Eppendorf ThermoMixer C and Eppendorf ThermoMixer Fxx)
• PCB temperature control (Eppendorf ThermoStat C)
• Heating/cooling plate (Eppendorf ThermoMixer C and Eppendorf ThermoStat C)
• SmartBlocks (Eppendorf ThermoMixer C and Eppendorf ThermoStat C)
• Thermoblock (Eppendorf ThermoMixer Fxx)
• Fan for cooling (heat sink fan) and for the switched-mode power supply
• Switched-mode power supply
• USB interface
• ThermoTop

2.2.1 Chassis

All devices have the same metal chassis. It holds the drive and the fans (including the air duct) for cooling.
The Eppendorf ThermoStat C has an enlarged heat sink installed instead of the drive.

2.2.2 Upper part of housing

All devices have the same plastic upper part of housing. The device name is printed on an exchangeable
clip. The clip is inserted in the front of the housing. The upper part of housing and the clip are connected to
each other by the device-specific adhesive keypad.

The upper part of housing contains the PCB control, the mains input (switched-mode power supply), the
fan for the switched-mode power supply, the USB interface and the contact to the ThermoTop.

2.2.3 Drive

The rotary movement of the motor is translated onto a circular orbit via an eccentric. A counterweight
compensates the resulting imbalance and ensures the stability of the device. The weight of the accessories
and their load is held by two stabilizer links. The stabilizer links are mounted on both sides of the motor.

The motor is controlled using the PCB motor control. A Hall sensor in the motor detects the speed and
reports it to the PCB control for checking.

2.2.4 PCB control

The PCB control is the central control unit of the devices containing the firmware. All internal operating
modes are controlled and monitored here. The commands that are entered via the keypad are recorded and
forwarded to the corresponding assemblies (e.g., PCB motor control, PCB temperature control). All sensor
feedback signals are recorded and processed, e.g., speed and temperature. The firmware responds
independently to the values received and makes adjustments, if required.

The three thermal modules (heating foil, Peltier module, ThermoTop) are activated sequentially by a
multiplexer. In this way, each thermal module can be supplied with maximum power.

The PCB control also includes the display on which all information can be displayed that is relevant to the
operation.

The switched-mode power supply supplies the PCB control with 24V. The other voltages (5 V, 12 V, etc.)
are generated directly on the PCB control from the 24 V.

There are always two temperature sensors each. The two values that are reported back are constantly
compared with each other. If the deviation is too great, the unit concerned is switched off and an error
message appears on the display. The motor speed is monitored by a Hall sensor. If the deviation from the
set speed is too great, the motor switches off and a corresponding error message appears on the display. In
addition, the current flow to the heating and the motor is monitored constantly. If the maximum value is
exceeded, the corresponding unit is deactivated and a corresponding error message also appears on the
display. Fuses are used as a further safety measure, they interrupt the circuits irreversibly, if required (the
fuses cannot be replaced).

All devices have the same PCB control with the same firmware. The firmware recognizes the device model
via the connected keypad that is unique to the device.

2.2.5 PCB motor control

The PCB motor control controls the motor. The parameters for controlling the motor of the device model
are stored on the PCB motor control. The heat sink fan is connected to the PCB motor control.

2.2.6 PCB temperature control

The PCB temperature control is only used with the Eppendorf ThermoStat C. The two heat sink fans are
connected to the PCB temperature control.

English (EN)

2.2.7 Heating/cooling plate

The heating/cooling plate includes a heating foil for heating and a Peltier module for cooling. An integrated
Hall sensor checks whether a SmartBlock has been mounted. The range of the Hall sensor has been
restricted so that the device can only be started if the SmartBlock has been mounted correctly.

2.2.8 SmartBlocks

The SmartBlocks have been actively integrated in the temperature control process. The SmartBlocks
contain the temperature sensors for temperature control and a memory which includes all the values that
are relevant for controlling the temperature. Each SmartBlock is individually adjusted during manufacture.
The SmartBlocks communicate with the device in a non-contact manner, via an optical-inductive interface
which is located on the bottom (front right).

The respective maximum speed of the SmartBlock is also stored in the SmartBlock and communicated to
the device via the optical inductive interface.

Power for the sensors and the memory is also being supplied in a non-contact manner via the
optical-inductive interface.

The SmartBlock plates has a light barrier on the right-hand side which is used to detect the height of the
loading used. If it has been loaded too high, the maximum speed is reduced.

2.2.9 Thermoblock

The Eppendorf ThermoMixer Fxx thermoblocks are tempered with a heating foil. The temperature sensors
and a memory with the parameters that are relevant for temperature and speed control are integrated into
the heating foil of the thermoblocks. They are individually adjusted during manufacture.

The thermoblock of the Eppendorf ThermoMixer FP has a light barrier on the right-hand side which is used
to detect the height of the loading used. If it has been loaded too high, the maximum speed is reduced.

2.2.10 Fan for cooling and for the electronic system

Depending on the device model, up to three fans are used:

• Eppendorf ThermoMixer Fxx: A fan for the switched-mode power supply.

• Eppendorf ThermoMixer C: A fan for the switched-mode power supply and a fan for the block
temperature control (heatsink fan).
• Eppendorf ThermoStat C: A fan for the switched-mode power supply and two fans for the block
temperature control (heatsink fan).

The heatsink fans have a variable speed control which depends on the temperature of the heatsinks
(determined indirectly via the Peltier voltage) and the set target temperature. The fan for the
switched-mode power supply has a speed control which depends on the output (it is switched off < 50 W).
Product description

English (EN)

2.2.11 Switched-mode power supply

The devices are supplied with power via a switched-mode power supply which outputs the internal supply
voltage (24 V) to the PCB control.

2.2.12 USB interface

A USB interface is located at the rear. The firmware of the devices can be updated via this interface and an
external laptop/PC.

2.2.13 ThermoTop

The ThermoTop can be used with some SmartBlocks to prevent condensation. It holds a temperature which
is approx. 3 to 18 Kelvin above the set block temperature. Due to differences in height between some of the
SmartBlocks/thermoblocks the exact temperature depends on which SmartBlock/thermoblock is used. The
temperature is controlled via two integrated temperature sensors which communicate with the device via
an optical-inductive interface.

The heating foil is supplied with power via two centering pins on the upper part of the device housing. For
safety reasons, the current flow via the centering pins is only active when the ThermoTop has been
attached (however, a centering pin still has a variable potential!).

The centering pins and some magnets fix the ThermoTop at the rear. At the front, the ThermoTop is fixed
by two magnets.
