FIRM-UP

There are many times when we feel like we are eating for different reasons, not just for the sake of getting nutrients from the
food we eat. Determining these reasons for eating would lead us to a healthier lifestyle. It is therefore important to know the
four types of eating.
Types Description
Fuel Eating when a person eats healthy food to provide energy and nourishment to his or her body
Fun/joy Eating when a person eats sweets, pastries, chips, or any food that bring him or her delight but do not
necessarily have nutritional value.
Fog Eating when a person eats any food while not being aware of it because he or she is preoccupied on doing
something like watching his or her favorite series
Storm Eating when a person is conscious of eating but he or she cannot stop himself or herself from doing so

Body Image and Eating Disorders

Our body image represents how we perceive our body-what it looks like to us and to others, whether accurate or not. When we
become too focused on ‘the standard’ of perfection that is created by fashion, advertising and movie industries, we can be
susceptible to dissatisfaction and harmful eating behaviors. Eating disorders are maladaptive patterns of eating that range from
severe restriction of food intake to binge eating and purging. Anorexia and bulimia are the two most severe forms.

Disorders Description
Anorexia Nervosa Often simply called anorexia — is an eating disorder characterized by an abnormally low body
weight, an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of weight. People with anorexia
place a high value on controlling their weight and shape, using extreme efforts that tend to
significantly interfere with their lives.
Bulimia Nervosa Is a serious, potentially life-threatening eating disorder characterized by a cycle of bingeing
and compensatory behaviors such as self-induced vomiting designed to undo or compensate
for the effects of binge eating.
Compulsive Similar to bulimia in the way the person consumes extremely large portions or amounts of food even
Overeating when they are not hungry or even when they are already full.
Starts a feeling of deprivation that urges the person to eat a lot, followed by eating continually as a
means to cope with stress and other emotional issues.
Compulsive An outlet behavior wherein a person experiences repeated episodes of exercising for hours at
Exercising whatever cost.

Alcohol Misuse and Abuse

Alcohol is a psychoactive or mood-changing social drug that is common among
college students ages 18-25.
The amount of alcohol in your blood, measured in percentages is expressed as blood
alcohol concentration (BAC). It is influenced by one’s body weight (less weight, greater
alcohol effect), sex (women have smaller body size and less proportion of water content
to dilute consumed alcohol), and health status.

There are three types of alcoholic beverages: beer, wine, and distilled spirits. The table below shows their characteristics.
Types of Alcohol Source Alcohol Content
Beer Grains  5%
 Light/Lite/Reduced-calorie-beer have the same % as
regular beer
Wine Fruits  12%
 Fortified wines such as port have higher that 12%
because of the added alcohol
 Wine coolers have lower alcohol content because of the
added fruit juice and sugar
Distilled spirits Starch or sugar from cereals,  40-50% (sometimes indicated by degrees of proof or
molasses from sugar beets, grapes, twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. For
potatoes, cherries, plums and other example, a 60-proof liquor is 30% alcohol.)
fruits  It includes gin, rum, vodka, whiskey, scotch, and
tequila.
In General, one drink defined as a 12-ounce (340 ml) beer, a 5-ounce (140 ml) glass of wine, and a 1.5 ounce (45 ml of an
80-proof) shot of distilled spirit contain the same amount of (0.5) of ethyl alcohol.
