I. ANALYSIS. Analyze what literary criticism is appropriate to the description of each literary pieces below.

1. Gist: In the play, Hamlet is a complex and troubled character who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his
father, the betrayal of his mother, and his own sense of identity. A psychological analysis of Hamlet's character would
focus on his mental and emotional state, his behavior, and his motivations.

2. Gist: Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel that explores the ideas of revolution and the corruption of power. The
novel is a metaphor for the Russian Revolution and the rise of dictatorship. In the novel, the animals overthrow their
human oppressors and establish a socialist society where everyone is equal. However, as the pigs gain power, they
become corrupt and begin to oppress the other animals, eventually becoming just as cruel as the human farmers they
overthrew.

3. Gist: In "Daddy," Plath, the author, addresses her father directly, expressing her complex feelings of love and hatred
towards him. It would suggest that Plath's relationship with her own father, who died when she was young, influenced
the themes and language of the poem. In addition, Plath's struggles with mental illness and suicide are reflected in
the intense, emotionally charged language of the poem.

4. Gist: The Handmaid’s Tale explores the theme of female agency and how women are stripped of their autonomy in a
patriarchal society. Offred, the author, is reduced to her reproductive function and her identity is defined solely by her
ability to bear children. Her thoughts, desires, and personal history are irrelevant and are systematically suppressed
by the totalitarian regime.

5. Example criticism: "The Red Wheelbarrow" is a short poem that consists of a single sentence broken up into four
stanzas. The poem describes a red wheelbarrow and the rainwater collected in it. Formalist critics would analyze the
poem's structure, syntax, and language to gain insight into its meaning.

II. COMPREHENSION CHECK. Read the paragraph and answer the following questions.

(https://www.exampleslab.com/20-examples-of-food-chains/)
