CUSTOMIZING A FURNITURE
Your father saw the chair you have done and he liked it, he really did, but he thought of another idea, that your
grandfather might be more delighted with a rocking chair instead. Will you accept your father’s challenge? Create
another design of a chair. You want your grandfather to see another scheme so that he has a choice between
the two designs. You will use a different profile for the parts and introduce a curved base to convert it to a rocking
chair. You should be able to use the Follow Me tool to create the armrests and supports correctly and indicate
the materials by using leader texts.

Instructions:
Instructions: Open Rocking Chair.skp. In the file you will find the seat and the profiles you need to generate the
armrests. One profile is for the armrest itself and the other one is for the support. Use the Follow Me tool to generate
the objects. Place the seat height (from the wood, not the cushion) at 18” from the floor. When done, use the Text
tool to show the materials used in the design. The call-outs are as follows: 19”x24” Cushion, 24”x3”x1” Wood,
20”x3”x1” Wood and Armrest. Save the file.

1. Open SketchUp file

Open the Rocking Chair Hands-on.skp, and you will find the seat from the previous meeting and the profiles for the
armrest.
2. Prepare the profile for the armrest
Copy the three edges and position the profile included in the file as shown.
3. Smoothen the profile
Create arcs at the corners of the given profile.
4. Create the curved support
Use the provided profile to generate the curved support
5. Combine the armrest and support
Join the two items and make them a component. Rotate to make it stand.
6. Combine the component and the seat
Position the armrest with the seat height set to 18” from the floor.
7. Change the material
Open Windows menu and select Materials. From the drop-down list of materials, choose wood. Then apply the Wood
Cherry Original material to the armrest. Copy the armrest to the other side of the chair.
8. Complete the assembly
Go inside the group of the seat, and change the materials there too with the same material as the armrest.
9. Create the cushion
Copy the group/plane of the seat and backrest. Add 1” thickness to both. Then create arcs at the corners to make
them appear curved.
10. Change the material
From the drop-down list of materials, select Carpet and Textiles. Apply the material Textile Rug Stripes to the
cushion.
11. Create leader text
Now, select the Text tool, and use it to make call-outs: Seat with Cushion and Armrest from 2”x4” Wood.
