DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND ICT

1. Identify three disruptive technologies and apply the Disruptive Innovation Model to how
they became known to the market.

a. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of preprogrammed algorithms
that a machine can utilize to perform tasks that are typically performed by
people. Contrarily, the discipline of machine learning in the realm of AI
enables computers to acquire knowledge on their own and perform tasks
independently (Repsol, 2023). Ancient Greek, Chinese, and Egyptian
civilizations introduced this disruptive technology to the market by
creating automatons to assist with daily tasks. However, the symposium at
Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1956 marked the birth of
modern artificial intelligence (Lewis, 2021).

b. Cloud services
Without the use of external storage devices, files can be saved
online via cloud services, sometimes referred to as cloud computing.
Companies can benefit greatly from this type of disruptive technology
because it enables people to access management tools from anywhere by
just connecting from their devices (Repsol, 2023). When Marc Benioff
began to create Salesforce for Oracle in 1998, it all began. It began as a
separate business strategy that sought to achieve online simplicity through
innovation in corporate software (Wickey, 2021).

c. Chatbots and smart assistants

Smart assistants ask a series of questions to better serve the user
and mimic a genuine conversation, whereas chatbots sustain a
conversation with a person automatically and autonomously (Repsol,
2023). To combat cart abandonment, online retailers have turned to this
revolutionary technology. Users and businesses alike benefit from the 24/7
automated service since it acts as a safety net. Smart assistants, like Alexa,
are expanding on their standard responsibilities and learning abilities that
help users and customers (Alan, 2022).
2. Choose only one area and discuss how ICT plays a role in that area

The surfacing of new technologies has made it possible for the use of
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education to increase in
recent years. The use of ICT in education is widespread and classrooms ensure
that they take advantage of what they can deliver to the students. Some of the
most used technologies in the classroom are blogs and social networks, planning
through tools, data storage in the cloud, and digital whiteboards and interactive
tables –all of which have been utilized to their fullest, especially during the
pandemic. Schools have switched to online learning in the past years, therefore
the use of ICT became a necessity. It became the new learning mode and the new
normal; it also changed how students learn and how educators teach. It has been
proven that the use of ICT in a classroom increases the motivation of the students.
They tend to show more interest and become more involved in the areas they
study. ICT enables the use of innovative resources to establish a more
collaborative learning setup and the simultaneous acquisition of technological
knowledge. Furthermore, ICT help in developing discernment; being able to
search for various sources and contrast them, as well as to structure information
are some of the notable skills students develop because of the utilization of ICT.
