Essay 1 Topic
‘Gender inequalities and discrimination against women are practices rooted in the history of cultural,
gender stereotypes, patriarchy, and masculinity’.
Refer to the above extract; and write an essay in which you use the United Nations (UN) Declarations
of Human Rights to critically discuss the specific human rights violations against women and evaluate
how the South African Constitution’s Bill of Human Rights has in 29 years been used to address such
social injustices.
In your answer, you may refer to the specific injustices against women in South Africa, explain what
characterise such practices as human rights violations as per the UN Declaration of Human Rights?
Consider whether such injustices have been addressed given the Bill of Human Rights in the South
African Constitution.
