Course Description
The Beginner Conversations Course is a language program meant to help people prepare for a practical
everyday conversation in the language of their choice. The program is designed with travelers and adventure
seekers in mind, people who are looking for a fun, easy and quick way to get started in a new language.
The course is organized around common situations encountered by every person traveling to a foreign
country: getting around the city, eating out, shopping and money, getting to know each other, dealing with
emergencies, etc. Each lesson is based on a conversation and contains a variety of engaging and increasingly
challenging activities that lead towards mastery of the words, phrases, and expressions a person needs to
know in order to understand and convey the basics for survival and to participate in typical everyday
conversations.
The Beginner Conversations Course is based on our 'Declarative First' approach to learning a foreign
language, which makes initial language acquisition fast, fun, and effective. Each unit and lesson incorporates
the key elements necessary for successful language acquisition: Useful Words & Phrases, Pronunciation
Practice, Writing, Grammar, and Culture.

Introduction to the Japanese Language
Japanese is not directly related to any other language or family of languages. The Japanese adopted Chinese
characters, Kanji, in the 3rd century A.D., but there is no evidence of a linguistic relationship between the two
languages. Japanese does share some grammatical similarities with Korean; however, no direct link has been
discovered. More than 125 million people in Japan speak Japanese.
Written Language
Japanese is written in a mixture of Kanji (Chinese characters), Hiragana, and Katakana. Kanji is a writing
system adapted from Chinese; Kanji characters represent both meaning and sound. Often, one Kanji has more
than one meaning and pronunciation. Hiragana and Katakana are both basic sets of 46 syllabic characters.
These 46 characters represent 46 different sounds. Hiragana and Katakana represent the same corresponding
sounds, but Hiragana is used to write native Japanese words and Katakana is used to write words of foreign
origin ("loan words") and some onomatopoeia. Also, the Romanized alphabet is used for transliteration
purposes as well as mixed in with Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana. This is called Romaji in Japanese. Japanese
sentences can be written both vertically and horizontally. When they are written vertically, you should read
them from right to the left. When they are written horizontally (like English), you should read them from left to
the right.

Pronunciation and Writing Rules

There are certain rules that will enable you to pronounce Japanese correctly as well as write Japanese words.
Consonant Sounds – Hiragana and Katakana
As shown in the Hiragana and Katakana charts above, there is one basic set of five vowel sounds, a-i-u-e-o.
The rest of the syllable sets are based on this vowel set combined with consonants. However, the consonant
sound "n" is the only consonant that stands alone, i.e. has its own Hiragana and Katakana character.
• Hiragana "n": ん
• Katakana "n": ン
In the examples below, you will see that "n" has its own syllable, and when written in Romaji, appears as a
single letter. Therefore, the first "n" is its own character:
• こんにちは "konnichiwa" (the second "n" is part of the next Hiragana character, "ni")
• さんねん "sannen" (the second "n" is part of the next Hiragana character, "ne")
• とんかつ "tonkatsu" ("n" stands alone as its own Hiragana character)
• ズボン "zubon" ("n" stands alone as its own Katakana character)
• ハンバーガー "hanba-ga-" ("n" stands alone as its own Katakana character)

You will see, however, other Japanese words that have other double consonants sounds and "spellings" in
Romaji besides "n", such as:
• まっすぐ "massugu" (straight)

• がっこう "gakkou" (school)
• ちょっと "chotto" (a little bit)
• コップ "koppu" (cup)
• ダイエット "daietto" (diet)
These double consonant sounds are formed by adding a small, dropped "tsu" (つ in words written in Hiragana
or ツ in words written in Katakana) character before the consonant sound that is to be doubled. (Remember!
The only exception for this is the "n" consonant sound.)
• まっすぐ "massugu" (straight) Double "s" sound with small, dropped つ in front of
す
• がっこう "gakkou" (school) Double "k" sound with small, dropped つ in front of こ
• ちょっと "chotto" (a little bit) Double "t" sound with small, dropped つ in front of と
• コップ "koppu" (cup) Double "p" sound with small, dropped ツ in front of プ
• ダイエット "daietto" (diet) Double "t" sound with small, dropped ツ in front of ト
Long Vowel Sounds – Hiragana

Long vowel sounds are essential because they can change the meaning of a word. For example:
• おばあさん "obaasan" = grandmother
• おばさん "obasan" = aunt
When the same vowel sound appears together, the following rules for transcribing these long vowel sounds
apply for Hiragana:
Aa あ is added after おかあさん okaasan ka + a (mother)
Ii い is added after ちいさい chiisai chi+I (small)
Uu う is added after しゅうじん shuujin shu+u (prisoner)
Ee: As a general rule, い (not え) is added after えいが eiga e+i (movie)
Of course, there are always exceptions to rules. So, there are a few words in which え is used for the
double "ee" sound おねえさん oneesan ne+e (older sister)
Oo: As a general rule, う (not お) is added after おべんとう obentou to+u (boxed lunch)
There are exceptions here as well, in which お could be used for double "oo" sound;
とおり toori to+o (street)

Long Vowel Sounds – Katakana
How long vowel sounds are written in Katakana is much simpler than in Hiragana. A long hyphen mark is
simply used with any vowel sound in Katakana to make that vowel sound long. When writing horizontally from
left to right, the hyphen is also horizontal. When writing vertically from right to left, the hyphen is also vertical.

Kanji
There are four types of Kanji characters:
1. Pictograms: derived from pictures
2. Simple ideograms: dots and lines to represent concepts
3. Compound ideograms: combining elements, or "radicals", of two or more Kanji to form more complex
Kanji for complex words
4. Phonetic-ideographic characters: combining a meaning "radical" plus a pronunciation "radical"
There are two main types of "readings" for Kanji:

The "reading" refers to how a Kanji is pronounced depending on placement, word, and combination with other
Kanji.
1. Onyomi: Based on the original Chinese pronunciation of the Kanji which Japanese adopted from China
over 1500 years ago. "On" in "onyomi" means "sound." "Yomi" means "reading" – how it is read or
pronounced. Therefore, remember it as "sounds like original Chinese."
2. Kunyomi: Referring to the reading for native Japanese words. "Kun" means "explanation" or
"meaning." "Yomi", again, means "reading."
Fundamentals of Writing Kanji:

There are two main things to keep in mind when writing Kanji:
1. Stroke Order: There is an established order for writing each individual stroke within a given Kanji.
2. Stroke Count: Kanji is classified and categorized in dictionaries according to stroke count, i.e., the
total number of strokes in a given Kanji. If you write the stroke order correctly, you will be able to get
the stroke count correctly.

1. Top to bottom Kanji character for three, "san"
2. Left to right Kanji character for river, "kawa"
3. If there are left, right, and center strokes, work from Kanji character for water, "mizu"
center, then left, then right.
3a) If there are vertical and horizontal strokes,

horizontal strokes go first (as a general rule; some Kanji character for tree, "ki"
exceptions exist).
4. If there are outside strokes surrounding inside Kanji character for sun or day, "ni" or
strokes, write three sides of outside first, fill in the "nichi"
inside, then close off outside with stroke on the bottom.
5. If there is a vertical stroke going through other parts Kanji character for center or middle, "naka"
of the Kanji, that vertical stroke goes last, or at least
later.
5a) If there is a horizontal stroke that overlaps, that Kanji character for woman, "onna"
stroke goes last, or at least later.
6. If there are strokes that appear like an "X" or a Kanji character for person, "hito"
diagonal crossing of strokes, then the top-right to
bottom-left stroke goes first.

go last, even though they are on the left of the Kanji or
the radical (part of a complex Kanji)
With this fundamental knowledge of Kanji, you should be able to approach any Kanji with ease.
