LADIES' S CIS SOBS.
We invite your attention to the advertisement and Price List of Shears and
Scissors in this issue of our Catalogue.

Aware of the difficulty experienced by ladies, who arc desirous of getting

good steel and good temper in scissors, we are happy to be able to offer goods in ,

;| this line, which a thorough knowledge of their working, enables us to guarantee

as perfect in every respect. A complete assortment, ranging from the most
1
1
powerful shears for heavy work to the smallest necessary size for ladies' use, is to

!
bo found under the Price List heading. There are no others in the market that
can compete with them in durability, temper, rapidity and ease of execution,
and neatness of operation. They are a compound of steel and wrought iron,
the inside of the blade being steel of the finest temper. By means of the weld-
ing (an operation which cannot be performed by the best workmen in the old

world, as it is the grand secret of the manufacturer,) great advantages are insured
to them when compared with seizors and shears imported from England and
elsewhere. It might sound like carrying coals to Newcastle, should we say

that they are in use in Sheffield, the well-known centre of cutlery manufacture
for Europe ;
but we cm go farther and say that they not only find a ready market
there, but are also exported to Russia and various countries in tin.' East
There are altogether three patents for these Shears. By means of the first

is see u'ed the oily perfect adaptation of the Shears to the hand. The second
concerns the ssrew — this is round on one end and square on the other. This
screw prevents any possibility of the blades cutting wide of each other, or over-
lapping. It also holds them so firmly together that a perfect fixture is maintained,
as long an the blades last. There is a!so one other patent for the Shears ;
that
is, for the shape and form of the blades. These are peculiar to this manufacture,

and combine with the rest of the article to produce perfect ease in cutting.

There is no more effort required to open the blades the full distance, than that

which ls actually necessary to expend in grasping the handle. Those who have
used them any length of time, assure us that with them they can cut cloth of
for

any description, fifty per cent, more easily and rapidly than with any others they
have ever tried.

It will' also bo noticed that we advertise Bent as well as Straight Shears for
o-enerai work, and Pocket Scissors in two sizes. In this department is also a

very useful little article, for which we have a constant demand —namely, the
Batton Hole Cutter. This is adjustable, and ^so arranged that it cuts without-

ripping or tearing the edges of the cloth in any way.

These goods being manufactured for the especial use of our customers, are

all marked with our name to prevent impostures and infringements ou our method
of manufacture.

Any of these goods can be obtained directly from us, or any of our agents.

E. BUTTERICK & CO..

589 Broadway, fi. Y.
We would respectfully call attention to our notices elsewhere in this
edition of the Catalogue of the intended changes in and additions to the
Metropolitan Magazine. In stating that this magazine fills a space in the
world of literary enterprise, which, previous to its appearance, was unoc-
cupied, we do not feel that we are in any wa}^ using the horn of vanity, for
we are carried out in our assertion by that best of all possible criterion's
the extensive circulation of the book itself. Hitherto, our especial aim has
been to make our book meet the wants of the public
it has been our —
desire to 'makeFashion what she ought to be, the handmaid of common
sense We have endeavored to strip her of that mystery which has so
long, and so unnecessarily borne her company, and by producing practical
American styles, have, we balieve, competed successfully with those of
foreign importation.
Influenced by the patronage so generously bestowed on us by our
friends the Public, and desirous of still further meriting that approval
without which it is impossible for enterprises like ours to extend them-
selves, we have concluded to make various additions to the Metropolitan. 1

Commencing with the July number, the book will in future be embel
lished with four pages of first class chromo lithographs, by means of j

which, we be much better able to illustrate the styles as they are

will
designed to appear, than is otherwise possible. These will be accompanied
;|
by full descriptions of the costumes shown.
To the present practical department will be added others, the names
[
of which are sufficiently indicative of their utility and even necessity, to
,
!

require no comment with regard to the expediency of their admission.

1

They will be entitled " What we do Recommend,-" and " What we do not
Recommend."
When not intruding on the space which will be monopolized by
Fashions and articles relative to fashion, literary matter of a type recog-
nized as first class will be inserted. This department, while with us only
of secondary consideration, will receive full attention, and our best efforts
will be given to make it £ source of enjoyment as well as benefit to our
readers.
The subscription price will remain the same, $1.50 per year, but no
patterns will be given as premiums.
Such a book as we propose to issue, at these low figures, will, we pre-
sume, appear rather anomalous, as they are unequaled by those of any
other magazine published in this country but the large subscription list
;

we now have, gives us assurance in our action, our motto being "The great-
est good to the greatest number."

THE METROPOLITAN MAGAZINE.
CRITICISMS OF THE PRESS.
From the New York Independent
I?ie Metropolitan —
a magazine published by this firm — is certainly
gotten up in a most practical manner, and by subscription is furnished
at the low rate of $1.50 a year.
It will pay any of our lady readers to examine this magazine.
It willbe found to contain, not the frivolous and overdrawn styles which
render so many of the published works of fashion useless, but common
sense tasteful styles, such as a Christian lady might adopt.
f

From the Exchange.

How the ladies got on before Butterick published the Metropolitan,
we haven't any notion. Badly enough, though, we guess. For, if it be
necessary for "the sex" to be well informed as to the reigning fashions,
and u that it is, all nature cries aloud through all her works," then they
must have got their knowledge at infinite trouble and pains. But
Butterick has made such accomplishments and acquirements easy, such
troubles a pleasure, at least we judge so, as they all buy his magazine

and govern themselves or their dresses, and it amounts to pretty much
the same thing —
accordingly. The Metropolitan is tabooed to bachelors.
m

They are immediately struck with lunacy if they fondly gaze on its
strangely illustrated pages. E. Butterick &
Co., 589 Broadway, New
York : send for a copy.
From the Montreal Evening Sta/r.
This' Magazine gives all the new styles and fashions. It tells how
to select and make different articles. It tells how to order such patterns
as you want. It enables a woman to be her own dress-maker, and to
insure, without other help, a perfect fit, and to dress in taste and and in
the fashion.
From the Liberal Christian.
Those of our lady readers wh > send to 589 Broadway, N. Y.", will
receive a profusely illustrated' work worth reading, and one which will
give them more real reliable information in regard to dress than any
other work published.
From the New York Globe.
This monthly was started two years ago it has now a circulation
;

of 30,000. It contains many illustrations of costumes, clearly and

strongly engraved, much sensible advice with regard to the fashions, and
bright and readable articles generally.
