What’s In
Write FACT if the statement is correct or BLUFF if it is NOT. Write
your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Plants, animals, and humans can survive because of the sun’s heat
that warms the earth.
2. The ultraviolet rays of the sun (UV) improve our mood.
3. Too much exposure to sunlight cannot cause sunburn, skin cancer,
heatstroke, and loss of water from the bodies of humans which may cause
stomach cramps.
4. Farmers dry their crops on hot warm days.
5. Humans are NOT benefited most with the help of the sun’s heat and light.
6. Recreational activities are done by families and friends on a sunny day.
8
7. Over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation cannot harm our immune system.
8. Wear clothes which protect the skin of your hand and feet while working
under the heat of the sun.
9. Long sunny days cannot cause drought resulting in stunted growth of plants
and scarcity of water.
10. The sun affects seasons, weather, and climate.
What’s New
Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

What is It
The Greenhouse effect is the process by which heat is trapped into the
atmosphere by carbon dioxide. Without the greenhouse effect, heat will escape
and much of the earth will be a frozen cold planet (Villegas, 2004).
Ozone is a form of an oxygen molecule combination with three atoms of
oxygen. As long as the three atoms of oxygen are chemically combined, the
ozone can act as Earth’s shield from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. The
ozone layer is found in the stratosphere, the second layer of our atmosphere.
The Ozone layer protects the earth by absorbing and deflecting 99% of
the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. It is a shield that surrounds the earth. But
this shield is easily destroyed by the CFCs or the
chlorofluorocarbons.

Global warming is the increase in the global air temperature due to the
increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Global warming causes the ocean
currents to become unusually warm that affects climates all over the world. It
will also cause extreme weather conditions such as stronger typhoons and heavy
rains (Villegas, 2004).
Global cooling is the recovery of the ozone layer that affects
Earth’s climate. Scientific analyses show that the decrease in stratospheric
ozone observed since the 1970s has produced a cooling effect
(britannica.com/science/ozone-depletion/Ozone-layer-recovery).

5. Improper Disposal of Waste
Improperly disposed waste also releases
greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Some waste will eventually rot, but not all, and
in the process, it may smell, or generate methane
gas, which contributes to the greenhouse effect
(www.greenchoices.org>wasterecycling, 2019).
1
Use Paper or Eco Bag
Avoid using plastic bags every time you go grocery shopping. Because plastic is harmful to
Compost
When you decompose the organics in landmines they produce methane and other greenhous
from the sun and contributes to warming the earth.
Recycle
Recycling minimizes pollution and preserves our natural resources. Collect the materials tha

What I Have Learned
Complete the sentences below. Choose your answers from the box and
write them on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Forest fires and smoke coming from factories release excessive amounts of
in the atmosphere.
2. Chemical compounds made up of atoms of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon
which are found in refrigerants, plastic foam insulation, a propellant for
spray cans, perfumes, and insecticides that destroy the ozone layer are called
.
3. is caused primarily by putting too much carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere when coal, oil, and natural gas are burned to
generate electricity or to run our cars.
4. The gradual thinning of the Earth's ozone layer in the upper atmosphere
caused by the release of chemical compounds containing gaseous chlorine or
bromine from industry and other human activities is called .
5. Large amounts of carbon dioxide prevent heat reflected on Earth from
escaping into outer space. This is called the .
6. are the greatest source of oxygen that removes carbon
dioxide and provide fresh and pure air to breathe. They help decrease ozone
levels in the environment.
7. minimizes pollution and preserves our natural resources.

8. We, as humans have become dependent on luxuries such as cars, houses, and
even our cell phones. But our love for manufactured metallic and plastic
goods affects the .
9. Pollution is everywhere. From the trash thrown out on the freeway, to the
millions of metric tons of pollution pumped into the __
every year.
10. Avoid the consumption of gases dangerous to the ,
due to their content or manufacturing process and minimize the use of cars,
cleaning products that are harmful to the environment and us. Buy local
products.
What I Can Do

practicing proper disposal.
2. Many industrial factories are maximizing the burning of fossil fuels that
release so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
3. Sharon and Melissa will attend a birthday party, they decided to use a hair
spray and perfume to become more presentable.
4. We all know that trees are the greatest sources of oxygen that remove carbon
dioxide and provide fresh and pure air for humans to breathe in. But some
people are continuously practicing uncontrolled cutting of plants and trees
just to earn more money.
5. Jose has a car, but he seldom uses it because he wants to save fuel and he
also knows that the smoke that comes out of vehicles can also affect the
atmosphere.
6. Mang Pepito is a farmer, he is practicing ‘kaingin’, a way of clearing a forest
area by burning to convert it into agricultural land.

7. People use CFCs in air-conditioning of cars, buildings, and houses. They are
also used as solvents for dry cleaning and on cleaning substances for
electronics. Because CFCs are gases, they go into the atmosphere.
8. Rene’s bicycle is rusty, he is using spray paint to repaint it.
9. Your EPP teacher asked you to plant a tree in your backyard and take care of
it until it becomes mature.
10. Burning of trees in the forests releases excessive amounts of carbon dioxide
to the atmosphere and this gas prevents the heat reflected to Earth from
escaping into outer space.
