Lesson
The Effects of Human
1 Activities on the Atmosphere

The atmosphere is an important part of what makes Earth livable. It

blocks some of the Sun's dangerous rays from reaching Earth. It traps heat,
making Earth a comfortable temperature. And the oxygen within our
atmosphere is essential for life (www.articlesbase.com).
As time goes on, many more chemical changes are applied by science and
technology to make people achieve more in less time and minimize the hassles
of ordinary chores. But changes may be good or bad (Fallaria, Apolinario,
Ronquillo, 2004).
The environment has been badly affected by some chemical changes
brought about by human activities that adversely affect our atmosphere. We
have more comfortable air-conditioned vehicles now. There are so many
products that are more efficient, durable, and cheaper. However, as more
modern products are made through scientific modernization, planet earth
becomes more affected (Villegas, 2004).
Do you know the effects of human activities on the atmosphere? Let’s
find out!

What’s In
Write FACT if the statement is correct or BLUFF if it is NOT. Write
your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Plants, animals, and humans can survive because of the sun’s heat
that warms the earth.
2. The ultraviolet rays of the sun (UV) improve our mood.
3. Too much exposure to sunlight cannot cause sunburn, skin cancer,
heatstroke, and loss of water from the bodies of humans which may cause
stomach cramps.
4. Farmers dry their crops on hot warm days.
5. Humans are NOT benefited most with the help of the sun’s heat and light.
6. Recreational activities are done by families and friends on a sunny day.

8
7. Over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation cannot harm our immune system.
8. Wear clothes which protect the skin of your hand and feet while working
under the heat of the sun.
9. Long sunny days cannot cause drought resulting in stunted growth of plants
and scarcity of water.
10. The sun affects seasons, weather, and climate.

What’s New

Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Mother Earth Weeps

(by Vida Socorro P. Ganchorre)

What have we done to our Mother Earth? Look

at the rivers, streams, seas, and lakes, Black with
dirt, waste without cease,
Mountains are denuded, forests have seldom trees.

What have we done to our Mother Earth?

Look at the sky towering above us, Black
with smoke and different forms of gas, Air that
we breathe, a danger to our health.

Mother Earth weeps for our attention, She

needs our care and loving protection,
Let us spare our world from harm and destruction
Stand, move, and be a part of the solution.

Guide Questions:

1. What happened to our rivers, seas, lakes, mountains and forests?

2. Why does Mother Earth weep?
3. What happened to the atmosphere as mentioned in the poem?
4. What do you think can happen if humans do not pay attention to
caring for and protecting Mother Earth?
5. How can you be a part of the solution to the environmental problems
presented in the poem?

9
What is It

The Greenhouse effect is the process by which heat is trapped into the
atmosphere by carbon dioxide. Without the greenhouse effect, heat will escape
and much of the earth will be a frozen cold planet (Villegas, 2004).
Ozone is a form of an oxygen molecule combination with three atoms of
oxygen. As long as the three atoms of oxygen are chemically combined, the
ozone can act as Earth’s shield from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. The
ozone layer is found in the stratosphere, the second layer of our atmosphere.
The Ozone layer protects the earth by absorbing and deflecting 99% of
the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. It is a shield that surrounds the earth. But
this shield is easily destroyed by the CFCs or the
chlorofluorocarbons.

Ozone depletion is a gradual thinning of the earth's ozone layer in the

upper atmosphere caused by the release of chemical compounds containing
gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry and other human activities (Fallaria,
Apolinario, Ronquillo, 2004).

1
Global warming is the increase in the global air temperature due to the
increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Global warming causes the ocean
currents to become unusually warm that affects climates all over the world. It
will also cause extreme weather conditions such as stronger typhoons and heavy
rains (Villegas, 2004).
Global cooling is the recovery of the ozone layer that affects
Earth’s climate. Scientific analyses show that the decrease in stratospheric
ozone observed since the 1970s has produced a cooling effect
(britannica.com/science/ozone-depletion/Ozone-layer-recovery).

Some Human Activities that Affect the Atmosphere

1. The Use of Chlorofluorocarbons

CFCs are found in refrigerants, plastic foam
insulation, a propellant for spray cans, aerosol hair
sprays, perfumes, and insecticides. They are also
used in air-conditioning of cars, buildings, and
houses. Because CFCs are gases, they go into the
atmosphere and
destroy the ozone layer (Villegas, 2004).
2. Deforestation
The uncontrolled cutting of plants and
trees growing in a forest without replanting and
the practice of ‘kaingin’ of farmers to convert
forest area into agricultural land by burning
which contributes to global warming (Cruz,
Gutierrez, Ziganay, Caintic, 2008).
3. The use of Motor Vehicles
Cars and trucks emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which contribute
to global warming pollution. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, which causes te

4. Burning of Fossil Fuels

When we burn oil, coal, and gas, we don't just
meet our energy needs - we drive the current global
warming crisis as well. Fossil fuels
produce large quantities of carbon dioxide
when burned. Carbon emissions trap heat
in the atmosphere and lead to climate change
(www.nationalgeographic.org>fossilfuel, 2018).

1
5. Improper Disposal of Waste
Improperly disposed waste also releases
greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Some waste will eventually rot, but not all, and
in the process, it may smell, or generate methane
gas, which contributes to the greenhouse effect
(www.greenchoices.org>wasterecycling, 2019).

Some Ways to Take Care of the Atmosphere

1. Reforestation or Plant More Trees

Trees are the greatest sources of oxygen that
removes carbon dioxide and provide
fresh and pure air to breathe. They help
decrease ozone level in the environment,
reduce noise pollution, and offer various
fruits and flowers that provide several health
benefits. You can also put indoor plants in
your home to reduce the level of air
pollutants like benzene and nitrogen
dioxide and keep the air temperature down.
2. Save Electricity
Always switch off the light, fan, or air-
condition when you walk out of the room or
don’t need them. Unplug the electronic
appliance when you are not using them.
3. Go Paperless or Use Less Paper
In the office or at home, we all take a print- out
of documents, tickets, and flyers, etc. Many trees are
cut down every year to produce paper.
So, by saving paper, you can do a huge favor to
conserve the environment.
4. Save Fuel
Walking or riding your bicycle to commute to
work, school, and other places will cut down the
fuel consumption and burn some calories, that is
also beneficial for your health.
Adopting these measures will save the fuel
and reduce greenhouse gases in the environment.

1
Use Paper or Eco Bag
Avoid using plastic bags every time you go grocery shopping. Because plastic is harmful to
Compost
When you decompose the organics in landmines they produce methane and other greenhous
from the sun and contributes to warming the earth.
Recycle
Recycling minimizes pollution and preserves our natural resources. Collect the materials tha
