Heat and Light from the Sun

Every morning mommy Cely is bringing her baby outside

their house to expose him to sunlight. She is always doing this
because their doctor said that sunlight exposure has a lot of
health benefits for the baby. The body makes vitamin D when the
skin is exposed to sunlight. It also helps in strengthening the
bones and teeth. So, mommy Cely is doing this to make sure that
her baby will grow healthy and strong because she loves her baby
so much.

Guide Questions:

1. What does the mother usually do to her baby?

2. Why the baby is exposed to the sunshine early in the morning?
3. What does one get from the heat and light of the sun?
4. What does vitamin D do for babies?
5. Why do you need the heat and light of the sun?
What is It

Many doctors advise mothers to take their babies under the

morning sun. Do you know why?
The sun helps the human body to make vitamin D. When
one is exposed to the right amount of sunlight, especially in the
morning, there is a substance under the skin that changes into
vitamin D. Vitamin D helps in the proper development of bones
and teeth (Violeta, 2017).

Beneficial effects of heat and light from the Sun

1. Sunlight enables us to see

everything around us. Without
sunlight, people and most animals
will find it difficult to see the
surroundings.

2. The heat and light from the sun help

us to dry our clothes.

3. The water cycle will not occur without heat from the sun. If
water do not naturally recycle itself, we would run out of clean
water, which is essential to life.

4. Sunlight prevents some diseases. Sunlight is a source of

vitamin D which prevents rickets, a disease of the bones.

5. The sun’s heat is useful for disinfection and sterilization.

The efficacy of sun exposure for reducing or eliminating all
harmful microorganisms from inanimate objects and
surfaces.
6. With the presence of sunlight, humans can do a lot of
activities such as harvesting, drying of crops, fishing, and
drying of fish and recreational activities like outings or
picnics.

Harmful effects of too much exposure to sunlight

Although heat and light have many good effects on you, too
much exposure to the sun can be harmful as well. Here are some
of the harmful effects of too much exposure to the sun.

1. Excessive exposure to sunlight

can burn or harm your skin.
This is when your skin gets red
and becomes painful. This
condition is called sunburn.
Constant over exposure to
sunlight may even lead to skin
cancer.
2. Too much exposure
to the sun rays may
result in headache
and nosebleed.

3. Do not look directly

at the sun because
it can damage your
eyes. Doing so can
make
you
temporarily blind.

4. The soil will become very dry and

can crack, causing the plants to die.
Farming also is not possible.
(Abutay, 2015).

5. The sun’s heat and warm air make

you perspire a lot. Too much
perspiration coming out of the body
can make you lose much water. This
may lead to dehydration. Some people
suffer from heatstroke, which often
results from overexposure to the sun.

Safety precautions from the harmful effects of the sun

under the sun. It can protect
your eyes from the sun’s heat
