Impact testing becomes essential in order to study the behavior of materials under
dynamic loading. An impact test determines the behavior of materials when subjected to high
rates of loading, usually in bending, tension or torsion. In an impact test a specimen machined
or ground and usually notched, is struck and broken by a single blow in a specially designed
testing machine. The quantity measured is the energy absorbed in breaking the specimen by a
single blow. The ideal impact test would be one in which all the energy of a blow is
transmitted to the test specimen. An impact test
gives an indication of the relative toughness
of the material.

PROCEDURE:

1) Calibrate the test to account for bearing friction and aerodynamic drag of pendulum

by testing without specimen and adjusting the pointer to indicate zero toughness,

2) Raise and lock the pendulum at a selected upper position at 140°

3) Set the pointer

4) Place the specimen in the tests. The notch should be on the side of h.

farthest from the striking edge of the pendulum and directly in line with

5) The pendulum falls to rupture the specimen and observe the indicated
value.

IZODIMPACT TEST
AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT: To determine the impact strength of given material by Izod

test.

COMPONENTS REQUIRED: Izod specimen, Impact tester

PRECAUTIONS:
Stay away from the pendulum swinging area before releasing the pendulum from

height.
.Lock the pendulum by turning the locking lever in clockwise direction always.
Make sure that the notch is placed opposite side of the hammer blow direction.

Apply break to stop the pendulum in several times by lever.

of the material. The Izod specimen is either circular or square in cross section and contains a

V notch near one end. The specimen is clamped vertically at one end like a cantilever beam

and is struck with the pendulum at the opposite end.
