Comparison of the New Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405 monitor

with the Thermo Scientific TEOM 1400ab monitor

Introduction

In 2007/2008, Thermo Scientific released a number of updated models of the Continuous

Particulate TEOM Monitor. The Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405 Ambient Air Monitoring Series
is a family of monitors that provide the opportunity to measure PM2.5, PM10, and PMCoarse
individually and combined. The TEOM Series 1405 has the ability to be configured with or
without the Filter Dynamics Measurement System (FDMS) in a single cabinet depending on site
specific needs and monitoring requirements, which adds the capability to account for volatile
compounds for all three size classification measurements.

This series of monitors includes the Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405, a standard style TEOM
monitor, the Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405-D, a dichotomous sampler without FDMS
technology, the Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405-F, a single channel TEOM monitor with FDMS
technology, and the Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405-DF, a continuous dichotomous ambient air
monitor with two FDMS. This technical note provides a comparison between the standard
TEOM 1405 monitor with a similarly equipped TEOM 1400ab monitor.

Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405

The Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405 is the replacement for the

successful TEOM 1400ab Ambient Particulate Monitor which is the
choice of air pollution monitoring networks worldwide to measure
particulate mass concentrations continuously. The system has become
the de-facto standard for particulate mass concentration measurements
in areas such as Canada, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and France
due to its high data quality, reliability and unparalleled support.

The Thermo Scientific TEOM 1405 is a continuous ambient air

monitor that provides unmatched short-term precision and resolution.
The instrument provides a direct mass measurement; a self-referencing,
NIST-traceable real-time microbalance true mass measurement using
Thermo Scientific's proven high reliability TEOM technology. The
system differentiates itself from other PM measurement methods by utilizing a direct mass
measurement that is not subject to measurement uncertainties found in surrogate techniques such
as beta attenuation, light scattering and pressure drop.

Experimental Approach

To verify the performance of the TEOM 1405, three 1405 and two 1400 monitors were
collocated and operated in a sampling trailer at the Thermo Fisher Scientific facilities in
Franklin, MA. The inlets of all monitors were separated at one meter spacing and all inlets were
approximately 1.5 meters above the roof of the trailer. The results from all samplers were
compared over a two week time period when sampling PM2.5. Both continuous data and daily
averages were compared for the two types of instruments.

The Thermo Scientific sampling trailer with the Series 1405 and Series 1400
TEOM monitors installed is pictured above. The trailer is located at the Thermo
Fisher Scientific facility in Franklin, MA.

Results

The results are presented in graphs below. The first graph shows a representative plot of the
rolling 1-hour average mass concentrations of the three 1405 TEOM monitors and the two 1400
TEOM monitors over a 12-hour period. The results show that all three TEOM 1405 monitors and
the two TEOM 1400 monitors provide similar results over this representative test period. This
segment is presented as the ambient mass concentrations range from less than 5 µg/m3 to over 30
µg/m3.
