Method Statement
Abandonment of Existing and Installation of New Foul Drainage Diversion

Project: Parkside Road


Site address: 18 Parkside Road, Reading, RG30 2DB. Date of works: 6th May 23–17th May23

Brief Description of activity


Divert existing, live foul drain run.
Construct temporary diversion whilst permanent adoptable standard manholes and pipe runs are being
installed, then make final connection to achieve uninterrupted service.

Involves:
● Clay and plastic drainage installation
● Concrete Chambers
● Excavator
● Pipe Lazer
● Pipe Grease and Collars

Training
All operatives are adequately trained to carry out required tasks and have attended a site induction.
Specific skilled operatives such as plant operators hold current certification and have the following training:

● CPCS certification

Access and Egress
 Deliveries will be offloaded from the front of site via 8m JCB telehandler
 Materials placed into position at rear of site
 Stacked in line with manufacturer’s instructions
 A stone ramp approx..4m wide at 1:10 Gradient is present from roadside to working surface
 The working surface consists of a piling mat of 375mm compacted and rolled 6f2 stone
 The surface is to be checked regularly for suitability of the tower scaffold

Site Induction
Upon arrival and prior to work commencing, all personnel will report to the site office to be inducted by the
site manager.

Plant operative tickets will be checked and a full review of the Risk Assessment and Method statement will
be carried out.

Signed records of the induction will be stored in the site office file

Detailed Method of Work


In advance of work commencing, the survey of the drainage to be abandoned will be assessed and a visual
inspection of the flow rate in the pipe viewed.

 CAT Scan all excavation areas for live services


 Check invert levels and outfall levels of existing manholes to ensure temporary diversion will be
suitable for existing chambers
 Construct temporary chambers and pipe bed in shingle to correct falls
 Make connection to final manhole
 Use stopper to temporarily block first manhole flow
 Make connection to first manhole from temp run and close connection to drainage section to be
abandoned
 Release the stopper
 Check flow of foul drainage runs correctly through the diversion
 Remove existing drainage to be abandoned
 Install new adoptable standard drainage run
 Make connection to final manhole
 Use stopper to temporarily block incoming flow to first manhole
 Make new connection to first manhole
 Remove all stoppers
 Check and confirm that adoptable drainage run flows correctly and no visible defects
 Abandon temporary run

Working at height
When working at height, site operatives must ensure that the working area is cleared on a periodical basis
to ensure that there is continually a clear and safe working area to prevent slips trips and falls.

First aid
Refer to the onsite safety notice board for all first aid information.

A first aid box with enough equipment to cope with 20 workers on site should is provided within the site
office.

Emergency procedures
The client or principal contractor will ensure that the existing site emergency procedures are followed and
that relevant information is given to operatives at time of induction or when changes are made to
procedures.
