Movement Analysis
Booklet 1

Levers
Lesson 1

LO: To identify the different lever class systems

Bronze: Identify the three different lever systems.
Silver: Identify and draw the three different lever systems.
Gold: Identify, draw and apply sporting examples to each of the three different
lever systems

A single lever has 3 components:

FULCRUM The pivot/ point of movement, usually a joint.

LOAD The load to be moved, usually a weight

EFFORT

The force applies to move the object – usually a muscular

contraction

CLASSIFICATION OF LEVERS

FIRST CLASS LEVERS

❖ Fulcrum lies between the effort and the Load.

Sporting Example 1 A header in football

Sporting Example 2 Tricep Extension

SECOND CLASS LEVERS

❖ Fulcrum lies at one end with the effort at the other end. The resistance lies in the
middle.

Sporting Example 1
Calf raise

Sporting Example 2
Pushing of blocks in sprint start

THIRD CLASS LEVERS

❖ Fulcrum lies at one end with the resistance at the other end. The effort is located
between the fulcrum & resistance
Sporting Example 1
Bicep Curl

Sporting Example 2 Kicking a football

TOP TIP

1, 2, 3 – F, R, E
st
1 Class Lever – F (fulcrum is in the middle)
2nd Class Lever – R (resistance is in the middle)
3rd Class Level – E (effort is in the middle)
PROGRESS CHECK

1. When running, the knee joint works as a lever system. Name, sketch and
label the lever system operating at the knee during running.

Third class lever

2. When performing a throw-in during football or rugby, or a chest pass during
netball or basketball, the arm straightens at the elbow. Name, sketch and
label the lever system operating at the elbow during this type of movement.

Lesson 2
LO: To understand the mechanical advantages for each lever systems
Bronze: Label the effort arm and load/resistance arm on 2/3 lever systems.
Silver: Label the effort arm and load/resistance arm on the 3 lever systems and
calculate the mechanical advantage
Gold: Calculate and explain the mechanical advantage of each lever system
