Worksheet No. 1

Symbol System

Name : Jomel Andrade Score: ______________

Class: BM 217A (2) Date: March 11,2023

1. Explain the statement and give concrete examples, “Words don’t mean;
people do.”

Answer: Meaning is in people not words, People interpret and understand

what is brought to them based on how they perceive and understand a
situation, thing, or experience.

Example: A painting's meaning is not dependent on the image portrayed, but

rather on how a person understands its depth and vagueness using words.
Similarly, a quotation's meaning is determined by how a person interprets it.

2. Is it alright for non-native speaker of English to use a sound from his/her

language as a substitute for an English sound that is nonexistent in his/her
language? Why or why not? Explain your answer and give examples.

Answer: My view is that it's OK. Why? Because certain profound English
words are difficult to pronounce for someone who was not born in an
American or an English-speaking nation. I believe that's sufficient as long as
you can tell what she or he is referring to and that the words and ideas are
genuine.

Example: Indians may substitute their own pronunciation of 't' for English
't'. Chinese speakers will substitute 'ei' for 'e' because they identify English 'e'
with their own 'ei'.

3. What do the following actions imply? Write your answer after the word.

a) clenched hands: The hands clenched gesture is a sign of frustration, and

it is important to pay attention to the height of the clenched hands to
indicate a person's negative mood.
b) raised eyebrow: Raising eyebrows is a sign of surprise or mild
disapproval, and is often used figuratively.

c) wink of an eye: Wink of an eye is an informal form of non-verbal

communication that conveys hidden knowledge or intent.

d) cupping your face: a person who is uninterested, impatient, or upset.

e) a pout: unhappy face

f) a sigh: A sigh typically signifies a negative mood (disappointment,

frustration, defeat, ennui, or wistfulness)
