Language and Culture

Relationship
Khawla Aldhaayan & Mona Alnasser
Language always carries meanings and references
beyond itself: The meanings of a particular language
represent the culture of a particular social group.
To interact with a language means to do so with the
culture which is its reference point.
We could not understand a culture without having
direct access to its language because of their
intimate connection.
Language is a system of communication using
gestures, sounds, or written symbols that have
significance for those who use the language
and follow its rules.
Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people,
encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.

Culture consists of the beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other characteristics

common to the members of a particular group or society. Through culture, people
and groups define themselves, conform to society's shared values, and contribute
to society.
Language and Culture Relationship
Many linguists explore the relationship between language and culture. Nida (1998:
29) holds the view that 'Language and culture are two symbolic systems.
Everything we say in language has meanings, designative or sociative, denotative
or connotative. Every language form we use has meanings, carries meanings that
are not in the same sense because it is associated with culture and culture is
more extensive than language.

Language and culture have a complex, homologous relationship. Language is

complexly intertwined with culture (they have evolved together, influencing one
another in the process, ultimately shaping what it means to be human). In this
context, A.L.Krober (1923) said, “culture, then, began when speech was present,
and from then on, the enrichment of either means the further development of the
other.”
“Changes in Language Often Reflect the
Changing Values of a Culture”

How is Culture Related to Language?
Language and culture are interlinked, and you cannot learn one of these without
having a clear understanding of the other.

language is linked to all the human-life aspects in society, and understanding of

the surrounding culture plays an important role in learning a language.
Moreover, language allows the organization and evolution of cultural values.
