INTRODUCTION
Earth is composed of several types of minerals. Minerals refers to a naturally occurring inorganic substance with a crystalline structure.
Crystals are composed of repeating structural unit composed of atom of one or more elements. Crystals/elements present and their
qualities affects he minerals as they form. These crystals may be directly observable in some minerals but may be unnoticeable in others.

G11 Earth Science – Teaching Guide
ROCKS ARE FORMED FROM AN AGGREGATION OF ONE OR MORE MINERAL AND OTHER SUBTANCES THAT CONCERNED INTO A SOLID
STRUTURE.
a. Igneous rock – are formed when molten rocks cool and harden
b. Sedimentary rock – are existing rocks that have been broken down into small particles.
c. Metamorphic rock – are rocks that have been in contact with high temperature.
Day 2: common groups of minerals
a. Native elements – made up of combination of chemical elements
b. Sulfides – made up of sulfur combined with another mineral usually metals
c. Oxides – are minerals compounds combining a metal with oxygen.
d. Carbonates – come from the combination of C, O and metal elements.
PRACTICE
Discuss the rock cycle
