What is Leading?

Leading is the third element of management, one of the management core


functions. Leading refers to a guidance or leadership, especially in a spiritual context. It
is a management function which involves influencing others to engage in the work
behaviors necessary to reach organizational goals. Leading entails using social and
informal channels of influence to motivate people to take action. If managers are effective
leaders, their subordinates will be motivated to work hard to achieve organizational goals.
Leading entails influencing or encouraging members of an organization to collaborate in
the organization's greatest advantage. It is the ability to persuade individuals to act in a
certain way for a specific reason. Leading is regarded as the most crucial and difficult of
all managerial tasks. Overall, leading entails managing, motivating and directing people
within an organization.
