Textbook: The World Today: Concepts and Regions in Geography, Chapters 1 and 2
In this module, you will be introduced to the field of geography and the fundamentals of this
exciting spatial science. The five themes of geography will be laid out, which will allow you to
analyze and divide the world into regions. You will start by analyzing why North America is a
distinct world region and how the subregions within North America vary. It will be helpful to
refer back to Chapter 1 throughout the course as a reference to geography and to which criteria
are used to designate regions. The sections entitled “World Geographic Realms” and “Regions
within Realms” specifically discuss the criteria used to identify realms (or regions) and
subregions and may help you complete the discussion and worksheet activities in this module.
The section entitled “Regions of North America” in Chapter 1 may also be useful references for
these activities. Figures 1-4 through 1-14 are maps that show world climates, world regions, and
major language groups. They contain much of the visual data that you will use to complete the
worksheet activity in this and future modules.
