Potato Glucose Agar is designed for cultivation, enumeration and strain maintenance of yeasts,
dermatophytes and molds, especially in food, dairy products and cosmetics.
Ten settle plates each with a diameter of 90 mm are single-bagged in transparent, hydrogen peroxide
impermeable sleeves (non-irradiated). The sleeves consist of polypropylene with a barrier of PE-EVOH-
PE.
The composition of Potato Glucose Agar complies with the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP).
Mode of Action
The nutritional content of potato extract is sufficient for fungal growth, but is further increased by the
addition of glucose. The colony morphology and pigmentation of dermatophytes, yeasts and molds,
which were subcultured on potato dextrose agar, is characteristic. Therefore, the agar is often used for
the identification of molds. Furthermore, the agar is used for medium-term storage of fungal cultures.
The high glucose content and low pH inhibit the growth of accompanying bacterial flora.
Typical Composition
The appearance of the medium is clear and yellowish. The pH value is in the range of 5.4-5.8. The
medium can be adjusted and/or supplemented according to the performance criteria required.
Each plate is provided with a label including a data matrix code for paperless plate identification. The
code consists of a two-dimensional 20-digit serial number, which harbors the following information:
Digits 1-3: here code 181 (corresponds to article 146726); digits 4-9: lot number; digits 10-14: batch
specific individual number; digits 15-20: expiration date (YY/MM/DD).
Please check each agar plate before using it on sterility and pay attention to aseptic handling in order
to avoid false positive results.
The medium is aerobically incubated for 3 days to 4 weeks (weekly read outs) at 24-26 °C and 35-37 °C
(especially for Trichophyton spp.), according to USP for 5-7 days at 20-25 °C.
For further identification, e.g. Yeast Glucose Agar with chloramphenicol (article number 146348) can be
applied.
Storage and Shelf Life
The product can be used for sampling until the expiry date if stored upright, protected from light and
properly sealed at +4 °C to +12 °C.
The testing procedures as described on the CoA can be started up to the expiry date printed on the
label.
Disposal
Please mind the respective regulations for the disposal of used culture medium (e.g. autoclave
for 20 min at 121 °C, disinfect, incinerate etc.).
