Muscular Tissue

• Mesodermal
• Contain contractile proteins that convert
chemical energy into mechanical work
• Made of elongated muscle cells (fibres).
• Its membrane = sarcolemma
• Its cytoplasm = sarcoplasm
• Rich in mitochondria , sER, glycogen ,
myoglobin & myofibrils
Types
2- Cardiac:
striated,
involuntary.

1- Skeletal:
striated,
voluntary.

3- Smooth:
non-striated,
involuntary.
1- SKELETAL MUSCLE
Sites:
• All muscles attached
to skeleton
• Face & tongue
Characters:
• Striated and voluntary in action
Structure of skeletal muscle

Muscle

Muscle fasicle = bundle of muscle fibers

Muscle fiber = muscle cell

Myofibril = contains thick and thin filaments

Structure of skeletal muscle
SKELETAL MUSCLE: Connective Tissue
Organization
• The whole muscle is
covered by a C.T.
covering, the epimysium.
• skeletal muscle fibres,
arranged in bundles,
separated by C.T. septa,
the perimysium.
• The individual fibres are
separated by C.T.,
endomysium,

• L.M. Picture:
– Cylindrical in shape.
– Non-branched except in face
and tongue.
– Covered by sarcolemma.
– Multinucleated: peripherally
located
– Cytoplasm (sarcoplasm) is
acidophilic and shows clear
transverse striations.

5-Golgi & ribosomes

6- Glycogen & myoglobin
E.M. Picture of Myofibrils:
– Contractile threads arranged
longitudinally in the
sarcoplasm.
– Each myofibril shows
alternate dark (A) and light
bands (I).
– The A band shows a pale
area in the middle (H zone)
which is divided by a dark
membrane (M).
– The (I) band is bisected by a
dark membrane, the Z line.
E.M. Picture of Myofibrils:
– Sarcomere is the distance
between 2 successive Z lines.
– The (A) band is formed of
thick myofilaments (myosin).
– The (I) band is formed of thin
myofilaments (actin).
– The (A) band is dark because Sarcomere
it contains both myosin and Z Z
actin. The (I) band and the
(H) zone are light because
they have only one type of
myofilaments (actin in I and I A I
Myosin
myosin in H). Actin
