Who are
consumers?
Any individual who purchases
products or services for his personal
use and not for manufacturing or
resale is called a consumer.

Consumer exploitation is a situation in
which a consumer is cheated or given false
information about the producer.

High prices:
Traders can charge a price higher
than the price prevailing in the
market.
Under measurement:
Some producers cheat the consumer
by restoring to under weight and
under measurement tactics.
Substandard quality:
Some traders sell substandard
products to the consumer. Nowadays
selling of fake products increased.
Adulterated products:
Some edible items are adulterated to
earn profit. This causes many
diseases.
Improper information:
Companies advertise their products
by feeding the advantages of it to the
consumer, but the disadvantages are
sill not informed to them.
Lack of safety devices:
Some producers try to produce
things of poor quality without caring
for the standard safeguard norms.
Artificial scarcity:
To earn profits seller, indulge in
creating artificial scarcity through
hoarding and black marketing.

Right to safety:
It is the right to be protected against
the marketing of goods and services,
which are hazardous to life and
property.
Right to choose:
It is the right to be assured, wherever
possible of access to variety of goods
and services at competitive prices.

Right to be heard:
It is the right where consumer’s
interests will receive due
considerations at appropriate forums.
Right to redressal:
It is the right to seek compensation
due to damage caused by unfair trade
practices and exploitation.
Right to consumer education:
It is the right to acquire the
knowledge and skill to be an
informed
consumer throughout life.

It is the consumer’s responsibility to
express and file a complaint about
their dissatisfaction with goods or
services in a sincere and good
manner.

Responsibility to be aware:
It is the consumer’s responsibility to
be mindful of the safety and quality
of products and services before
purchasing.

It is the consumer’s responsibility to
be well concerned about what they
want and need and therefore make
independent choices.

It is the consumer’s responsibility to
choose goods that are ethically
sourced, ethically made and ethically
distributed.

It is the consumer’s responsibility to
express their grievances and file
complaint against contaminated or
substandard products even when the
loss is small.

It is a demonstration of ensuring that
the purchaser knows about the
information about the products,
administrations and buyer’s
privileges.

Jago Grahak Jago
(Wake up customer!) is one of the
successful consumer awareness
campaigns. It was launched by
department of food under the
government of India.
They created awareness
between consumers to stop wrong
practices by merchants. Many illegal
things going around were stopped and
good quality products were delivered
to the end nodes.
There was an
establishment 0f consumer forums
and courts to handle cases filed by
consumers. By providing helpline
numbers Jago Grahak Jago achieved
mass popularity.

Case study – 1
Mr. Kondaiah from Andhra Pradesh
noticed that Sarvi Food Court
charged him Rs40 for a water bottle,
but the MRP was Rs20. He filed a
case against them in the district
consumer cases disputes redressal
forum for ‘unfair trade practice’. He
supported his claim by producing his
bill.
Court’s verdict:
The court said that a practice is not
justified just because it is widely
common. Mr. Kondaiah was awarded
with a compensation of Rs20,000, Rs
20.

Case study – 2
K. Chaattu complained against
Indulekha and Mammootty for
putting up misleading ads. The
tagline of the soap says that ‘beauty
will come in search of you’. The ads
also claimed that people will become
‘fair’ and ‘beautiful’ but Chaattu,
didn’t become so.
Court’s verdict:
Indulekha was told to pay Rs30,000 as
compensation to K. Chaattu.
Case study – 3
Nikhil Bansal saw an iPhone for just
Rs68. It was an offer on Snapdeal
(with discount of Rs46,651) and he
ordered it immediately. He received
a confirmation order and later it was
canceled. They told that it was a
technical glitch. He approached the e
commerce consumer complaints
India forum.
Court’s verdict:
The forum asked Snapdeal to deliver
him the iPhone for Rs68 and pay a
compensation of Rs2000.
