Mention the organisations like the Red Cross Society, Rotary International, Lions
Club, MERCY, Tzu-chi and the list goes on. Such international organisations bring to mind
services rendered by them to the community both on a microscale and a global scale. Social
services, in fact, fit the saying “actions speak louder than words” and “Walking the talk”.
Social services, in the true sense of the word, encompass good deeds like helping out in
earthquakes and other forms of calamities (catastrophes), helping the unfortunate like the
crippled, the blind, the sick, the poor, the disabled and helping those in times of need during
a pandemic or outbreak of diseases and engaging in routine community projects both locally
and worldwide. Normally, people who are actively involved in social services have
volunteerism at heart and they undeniably put “service above self”. Basically, they are not
mercenary and secular. In the light of this, I agree that social services are of utmost
important from the perspective of humanitarian background, economic aspects and health
issues.
