CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
The laboratory practice on the digestive and respiratory systems of goats is
one of the important practices in various study programs related to animal
husbandry or veterinary medicine. Goats are important livestock for the
production of meat and milk. They are also widely raised in Indonesia due to their
adaptability to diverse environments and high production potential.
During the laboratory practice, students learn about the anatomy and
physiology of the digestive and respiratory systems of goats. The digestive system
of goats consists of the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large
intestine, and anus. Meanwhile, the respiratory system consists of the nose,
pharynx, trachea, and lungs. Students will learn about the functions and roles of
these organs in the metabolism and elimination of metabolic waste in goats.
A good understanding of the digestive and respiratory systems of goats is
crucial in the overall management of goats. Proper management of goats can
increase productivity and improve the quality of their meat and milk.
Understanding the digestive and respiratory systems of goats is also important in
developing better research programs in the future. For example, research on the
quality of goat feed can be conducted by understanding the goat’s digestive
system more deeply.

1.2 Purposes
The objectives of the digestive and respiratory system laboratory in goats are
to understand the anatomy and physiology of the digestive and respiratory
systems in goats, to observe and identify the different organs and structures
involved in the digestive and respiratory systems, to understand the functions of
the different organs and structures in the digestive and respiratory systems and to
understand the process of digestion and respiration in goats.

1.3 Benefits
The benefits of conducting a digestive and respiratory system laboratory in
goats are improved understanding: The laboratory provides an opportunity to
improve students’ understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and function of the
digestive and respiratory systems in goats, hands-on experience: The laboratory
allows students to have hands-on experience in identifying and observing different
organs and structures involved in the digestive and respiratory systems, improved
diagnostic skills: Students learn how to collect and analyze samples from the
digestive and respiratory systems, which can help in the diagnosis of common
digestive and respiratory problems in goats, career preparation: The laboratory
provides practical experience that can prepare students for careers in veterinary
medicine, animal science, and other related fields and research opportunities: The
laboratory can serve as a platform for conducting research in the areas of digestive
and respiratory health in goats, which can contribute to scientific knowledge and
advancement in the field.
