INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION
AVOID DIRECT EXPOSURE 980/1480/1550nm
TO BEAM Class IIIb LASER PRODUCT

Before handling the amplifier equipment, carefully read the information below. It is important
that the operators should practice basic laser safety precautions at all time. If you have any
questions about the safety features of this equipment, contact with us. We would not be
responsible for any damage due to not agree with the safety instructions.

The output signals of the pump laser and EDFA are not visible. The high power level of these
devices is sufficient to cause damage to the eyes or skin. Do not look directly at the input or
output fiber cross-section without using approved eye-safety equipment. Do not permit the
input or output fibers (with or without connectors) to be aimed directly at any part of the body
as serious burns may result.

This amplifier should be operated in accordance with the applicable government regulations for
Class IIIB devices.

Do not open the amplifier. There are no user-maintainable or user-serviceable parts inside the
housing.

INTRODUCTION
General
The EDFA-TV series has been designed for fiber optical transmission and FTTx systems. The
EDFA provides up to 37dBm of output power with excellent noise figure performance. It
combines high performance EDFA and a friendly interface. The unit can be configured through
the front panel keys. According to the Customer request, we also provide multiple
communication interfaces, such as web/telnet and RS-232.
Optical
Performance has been optimized for low noise figure over a large input power range by careful
selection of both passive and active components. The amplifier consists of optically pumped
erbium doped fiber using high reliability laser diodes. Input and output ports are optically
isolated to maintain stable operation of the amplifier module in system applications. Optical
splitters couple a small fraction of the input and output light into photo-diodes for monitoring
and control. The micro-controller ensures optimum optical stability and also allows the user to
define the operating parameters and monitor the device performance. In some case, optical
splitter unit (1x2, 1x4, 1x8, 1x16, 1x32) is provided as optional.
Package
The unit is housed in an industry standard 1U or 2U high 19’’subrack, with input and output
connections through standard SC/APC connectors, or other connectors which the customer
requests. Dual 220V AC or 48V DC sockets are applied to the rear panel of the unit. The front
panel contains a status light, a LCD, push button to navigate on the display.
Applications
1. Transmitter booster-amplifier in transmission systems
2. Optical line amplifier
3. Amplifier in CATV systems
4. FTTx system /RF Broadcast system

INSTALLATION
Unpacking
Upon receiving the EDFA, visually inspect the unit to ensure that no damage has occurred
during shipping. In the event of shipping damage, please report it immediately.

The EDFA is shipped with the following:

One EDFA
One user Manual
One Network Management Interface Operation Manual
One Test Report
TWO Power cables
One cable for communication between computer and the unit(2m)
One Ethernet cable(2m)
Other accessories on packing list

We recommend that you save all shipping cartons and packaging material. They were
designed to protect the amplifier during shipment, and should be used whenever you transport
or store the amplifier. Since there are no user-serviceable parts inside the unit, the packaging
will be needed to return the amplifier in the event that service is required.

FAN UNIT
The Fan unit is hot swapped which is start-up when the temperature is EDFA module is
above Threshold. At the same time, the Fan state is displaying by the LCD. user can read the
Fan state by using the browsing button(Pre or Next).if the temperature of the EDFA module is
bellow Threshold, the state is “OFF”; if the temperature of the EDFA module is above
Threshold, the state is “ON”; If the fan fails, we advise that user connect the manufacture to
replace the unit.
Installation
To install the amplifier, following the steps below:
Fix the EDFA to the shelf using four screws.
Connect power supply to rear panel.
Carefully clean the ends of the optical fiber jumpers.
Connect output fiber to the amplifier.
Connect input port of amplifier and input signal source.
In normal case, all the LED alarm indicators in the front panel should be off several seconds
after the power is on. If any alarm indicator is activated, see Maintenance.

12
OPERATION
Start
Once all the connections have been made to the amplifier (see Installation), the unit can be
operated following the instructions below:
1. Confirm that all fiber connections are correct.
2. Verify that the power cord is properly connected to the amplifier.
3. Turn on the power to the amplifier on the rear front panel.
At the time of turning on the power of the EDFA, After a few seconds of self-testing, the unit’s
LCD Display should indicate serial number of the unit. And all the LED alarm indictors should
be off in several seconds.

MAINTENANCE

Fiber Optic Maintenance

Any time the fiber leads to the amplifier are disconnected, there is potential for contamination
of the ends of the fiber connectors. Dirt or other contaminants on these components can
reduce the amplifier’s performance or result in damage to the system. It is recommended that
the fiber connectors be cleaned each time prior to reconnection to the system.
