3 Spectralis Family
The Spectralis family comprises six different family members:
 the Spectralis HRA+OCT, which combines all the HRA2 features with OCT imaging
 the Spectralis OCT PLUS, which includes all the OCT features together with an IR
reflection image
 the Spectralis HRA, which is the succeeding instrument to the HRA2 without OCT
imaging
 the Spectralis OCT, you might call it the “OCT only” of the Spectralis product family
 the Spectralis OCT PLUS BluePeak and the Spectralis OCT BluePeak. Both models
have a blue laser source for blue laser autofluorescence. Both do NOT have the
angiography modality
 additional, on request are models available without ICG, or ICG only, see chapter 3.6

3.1 Spectralis HRA+OCT

The Spectralis HRA+OCT (SN xxxx-S3300) includes all components required for the
angiography features and the OCT imaging, i.e.:
 The camera head includes the SLD laser source and the OCT reference arm, as well as
the IR + ICG laser diodes and the fiber collimator for the FA laser. The cable loom
contains the FA fiber and the OCT fiber for the spectrometer.
 The power supply has three levels:
o in the bottom part, there is located the power supply, the service display, the
IModule / carrier stack for the HRA images as well as the IGate board for the fire
wire interfaces.
o the middle level consists of the FA-laser (Sapphire) unit, driver electronics for the
laser, an acousto-optical modulator as well as the fiber coupling unit.
o The OCT spectrometer is located in the upper level together with the IModule-D /
carrier stack for the OCT.

 2009 we did a laser source change: the current sapphire laser light source is being
replaced with a diode laser of the same wavelength, more details in chapter 5.1.4.
If you have a for example a HRA + OCT with diode laser instead of the sapphire laser
(SN xxxx- S3600), you do not have anymore the complete sapphire laser unit (SLU).
The FA fiber is missing as well, because the blue laser diode is inside the camera.
Below an example of a power supply box without SLU.

3.2 Spectralis OCT PLUS

The Spectralis OCTPLUS includes the components required for spectral domain OCT imaging as
well as for the acquisition of a high quality IR reflection image, which serves as reference
image.
 The camera head includes the SLD laser source and the OCT reference arm, as well as
an IR laser diodes. The cable loom does not contain the FA fiber but only the OCT fiber
for the spectrometer. There is no filter wheel, as the angiography barrier filter is not
required.
 The power supply has only two levels, and therefore is equipped with a lower cover:
o the bottom part is the same as in the combined systems, also the IModule /
carrier stack for the HRA images is needed for the IR-images.
o The OCT spectrometer is located in the upper level together with the IModule-D /
carrier stack for the OCT.

3.3 Spectralis HRA

The Spectralis HRA is basically the successional instrument of the HRA2. There are minor
mechanical and electric changes, which allow an easier upgrade to the combined version.
 The camera head includes all laser sources and other components for IR, ICG and
FA/redfree imaging.
 The power supply again has only two levels, and therefore is equipped with a lower
cover:
o the bottom part does not differ from the other Spectralis instruments.
o The upper level is identical to the middle part of the combined version (Sapphire
laser unit).
o Note: The SLU is replaced since 2009 with the blue laser diode

3.4 Spectralis OCT

o The Spectralis OCT is like the OCTPLUS, but without touch panel and without foot
pedal. There is a new instrumentation base (type TR) only for this type.
Peripheral images are not possible.

3.5 Spectralis OCT PLUS BluePeak and the Spectralis OCT bluepeak
BluePeak: blue laser autofluorescence is a non-invasive, diagnostic imaging modality that takes
advantage of the natural autofluorescence property of the retina. Both models contain a blue
laser source. The 488nm laser is used for FAF detection. As the laser is blue, we call the
products BluePeak. Furthermore, "peak" refers to the specific excitation of autofluorescence
with the laser and the confocal principle of scanning.
The Spectralis OCTPLUS BluePeak equipment variant includes the pivoting, type KT
instrumentation base for peripheral imaging and the touch screen panel, whereas the Spectralis
OCT BluePeak variant is shipped with the non-pivoting type TR instrumentation base and
without touch panel.

meter onto the objective and check the  Correct mode (HR-mode / HS-
following settings: mode)
 Refraction set to 0 diopters
 Laser intensity set to 100%
 Scan angle set to 30°

5.1.2.2 Averaging Procedure

The laser power indicated on the display will fluctuate due to the modulation of the laser during
the scan procedure. In order to obtain reproducible power readings the averaging mode of the
power meter should be used in order to measure the mean laser power over 10 seconds.

 turn on the powermeter

 press the menu button until you see laser on the menu bar
 press laser until the correct wavelength is displayed
 press the menu button until you see range on the menu bar
 press range
 use up and down to choose the desired power range
 press exit
 press the menu button until you see more on the menu bar
 press select until average is highlighted

5.1.3 Specified Values

The HRA includes 3 independent laser sources as listed in the following table: a 488 nm laser
for the fluorescein angiography and red-free imaging, as well as two near infrared laser diodes
for ICG angiography (785 nm) and IR reflection images (820 nm). Whereas the infrared laser
diodes are implemented inside the camera head, the blue FA laser radiation is coupled by
means of a single mode, polarisation maintaining fiber into the camera head. You may have a
unit with blue laser diode instead of the sapphire laser, in this case the fiber is missing.
The laser power values are given in the following table for the 30° scan field in HR and HS
mode. These values refer always to a power setting of 100%. Please note, that for 20° and 15°
the power values are lower due to a smaller duty cycle (lower time ratio laser on / laser off )

5.1.4 Blue laser source change:

The technical changes described are being implemented in the following SPECTRALIS models
 SPECTRALIS HRA
 SPECTRALIS OCT BluePeak
 SPECTRALIS OCT PLUS BluePeak
 SPECTRALIS HRA+OCT

The current sapphire laser light source is being replaced with a diode laser of the same
wavelength.
The new diode laser is located directly in the camera head. For this reason, the acousto-optic
modulator, fiber coupler and laser fiber connection between camera head and power supply
become obsolete. Hence, the device will be easier to install. No adjustments to the diode laser
are required during installation of a SPECTRALIS device. The requirements for laser power
measurement during device installation remain unchanged.
It is important to note that the clinical performance of the product will remain the same
independent of this change.
Spectralis models already delivered from Heidelberg Engineering can not be upgraded to the
new light source.

5.2 OCT Light Source Power Check

A superluminescence diode (SLD), which emits in the spectral range from 840 nm to 920 nm
(with the maximum around 870 nm) is implemented inside the Spectralis camera head.
The SLD power can be measured as follows:
 Select OCT + IR mode, set the IR-laser to 0 %
 Select the circular scan pattern.
 In order to obtain unmodulated SLD power output disable the “live” and “automatic”
check boxes in the Ctrl Alt Shift O window.
 Set the Ophir power meter to the wavelength 880 nm and to the range 3 mW. As the
SLD is not modulated during circular scans the averaging mode is not required for this
measurement.

The specified SLD power is:

Wavelength
Output power at objective
OCT Light source [nm]
(circular scan, IR laser set to 0%)
(colour)
Superluminescence 880 nm
1.20 mW (-0.1 / +0.05 mW)
diode (infrared)

Please note :
 In order to set the laser power to 0%, the touch screen panel has to be set to the service
mode (see section 8.7). Then select 5% power setting and press 5 times on the –
button.
 Alternatively the measurement can be done also at IR laser power 25%. The IR laser
power at 25% is between 10 and 20 µW (30°, HR mode), so instead of a correct value of
1.2 mW a slightly higher value is displayed. By subtracting 15 µW = 0.015 mW from the
measured value this error can be corrected.

5.3 HRA Scanner Settings

The HRA scanner setting can be checked in two ways, which both will be explained in the
following. The first method uses the internal field aperture and software algorithms from the
HRA service window (Ctrl & Alt & Shift & D, see section 6.1.1) to measure the values for the
scan amplitudes and offsets. The second method uses a scale target, which is brought into the
intermediate plane to measure the scan amplitude. This method allows also to check the

5.3.1 Scanner check by means of the internal field aperture

The acquisition module includes an easy way for checking the scan angles of the HRA subunit.
The software computes the scan angles from the margins of an implemented field aperture,
which is positioned in the intermediate plane of the optics.
Please follow the procedure:
 Set camera to live mode
 Select IR reflection mode
 Open the HRA service window, see section 6.1.1 for details.
 Activate large size mode
(Service Mode Live image)
 The actual scan angles are displayed in the acquisition module service window (see 6.1.1)
(in the example shown in section 6.1.1: Y-angle: 30,58° X-angle: 30,64°)
 Verify the red marker are located exactly on the edge of the field aperture

5.4 HRA image quality

5.4.1 Central artefact in HRA images

Due to internal reflections on two surfaces within the Spectralis objective there is a central
artefact visible in the IR reflection image. This artefact may be also in the red free mode visible
at high detector sensitivity; however, it must not be visible in both angiography modes (FA and
ICGA) under any circumstances.

5.4.2 Influence of dirty objective on image quality

The IR reflection image at the

right was acquired on a healthy
clear eye at laser intensity 100%
and detector sensitivity 84. The
machine came back to Heidelberg
with the error message strong
artefact in the IR-reflection mode.

The IR reflection image at the left was acquired

under identical conditions (same person, same
laser intensity and sensitivity) just after carefully
cleaning the lens.
This demonstrates, that a strong grease film on
the front lens reduced on one hand very
significantly the signal of the retina and
increased at the same time the signal of the
lens reflection in the upper image.

The IR reflection image at the right was

acquired, now with reduced detector
sensitivity (8451). This image still shows
the presence of the central artefact, however
at a very reduced level.
It is clear, that for patients with cataract the
artefact will appear stronger, as due to the
increased sensitivity the lens reflection will
be more prominent. This is also the case for
patients with about –5 dioptres, where the
lens reflection is in focus.

5.4.3 Shift of even versus odd lines
The HRA images in the Spectralis are all acquired in so-called double-scan mode, which
means, that data
I
is acquired when the resonant scanner I
sweeps from left to right as well as
during the back sweep from right to left. The even lines then have to be mirrored because of
their inverted scan direction.

shift shift

Due to a thermal dependency, the horizontal position of the digitisation range within one line is
slightly varying which leads to a shift between even and odd image lines. This line shift between
even and odd lines will be detected and compensated by the operating software of the HRA.
Nevertheless, problems could occur in two cases:
 the pixel range for the shift parameter (0 … 255) is not sufficient.
Note: this range can be enlarged (contact Heidelberg Engineering), however, if the shift
parameter changes strongly, this could be a first hint for a X-scanner problem.
 If the image content does not show enough structure, is too dark or too noisy, the shift
algorithm possibly does not work correctly.
A shift problem is manifested in leads to “step” like boundaries of blood vessels or a “shadows”
of all displayed structures. In the HRA service window (Ctrl & Alt & Shift & D, section 6.1.1), the
automatic shift correction can be either disabled, or the shift parameter can be adjusted
manually.

5.4.4 ART-Mode, Signal to noise ratio

There are several HRA imaging modes, where only very little signal is available, such as
Autofluorescence or late phase FA and ICG. As the signal light level is very low, the sensitivity
has to be increased to very high values (e.g. > 90), which results in a significant increase of the
noise level. This leads to grainy, noisy images.

However, the image quality can be dramatically increased in all these modes, just by enabling
the so-called ART-mode (automatic real-time). In this mode many single HRA frames are
integrated, considering on-line (during the acquisition) the unavoidable eye movements. To
enable the ART-mode, press the sensitivity wheel button on the touch panel.

This feature helps tremendously to increase the image quality in critical imaging modes,
therefore it is extremely important, that the user is thoroughly trained in this respect.

5.4.5 HRA Handling Errors

In many cases the lack of experience of the user results in reduced quality. Therefore a very
thoroughly training of the user is extremely important. Typical handling errors are:

a) Noisy images
ART mode not activated (see Section 5.4.4)

b) Shadowed corners
distance camera objective to the eye not correct

c) Uneven illuminated images

Lateral (X/Y) adjustment of the camera not optimum.

d) Images not in focus

refraction knob not correctly adjusted
internal myopic lens not used for myopic patient
if the lateral adjustment is not o.k., sometimes only a part of the image appears out of
focus.

e) Overexposed or underexposed images

Sensitivity not correctly adjusted
laser power not reduced (e.g. in IR images).

5.5 HRA Z-Module

The Z-Module is an internal opto-mechanical assembly, which allows to modify the beam
divergence of the HRA laser beams. This assembly is not inside the beam path of the OCT
light, therefore it does not affect the OCT imaging subsystem. One of the lenses can be moved
along the optical axis by means of the stepper motor.
When the power is switched on, the following reset procedure starts automatically: the lens is
moved to the end of the travel range, where it hits a little micro switch, the so-called end switch.
Then the lens moves a well defined number of steps back to it‟s home position (different
position for the FA laser and for the IR laser diodes). The actual position of the stepper can be
seen in the HRA service window (Ctrl & Alt & Shift & D, see section 6.1.1). Here the motor can
be moved also to mouse clicks; in addition the reset procedure can be started manually from
this service window.

The HRA Z-module is used for the following tasks:

 Z-Scan: during the acquisition of Z-scans the Z-Module moves the focus plane between
two frames further into the eye.
 Chromatic compensation: In order to compensate for chromatic aberrations of the
internal optics there are stored two different home positions: one for the blue 488 nm
laser (FA-mode and redfree) and a second one for the IR laser diodes (IR diode at 820
nm and ICG diode at 785 nm). These two home positions differ usually by about 0 – 3
steps. Therefore, when switching e.g. from FA to ICGA, the stepper moves a few steps,
in case of simultaneous imaging FA&ICG, the stepper moves to the middle position.
 Internal myopic lens: As the refraction adjustment for myopic patients is limited down
to about -12 dioptres, an additional internal myopic lens is realized by means of the Z-
module. If this internal lens is activated (-6 or -12 dioptres), the stepper moves the lens
in order to generate additional beam divergence.
In order to check the functioning of the Z-module proceed as follows:

5.5.1 Home position of the Z-module

If the z-module is in the home position, the edges of the internal field aperture should be in
focus, when activating the Service Mode Live Imaging (large mode) in the HRA service window
(Ctrl & Alt & Shift & D, see section 6.1.1). In the upper image the Z-module is in the correct
home position (here: 249 steps), therefore the edges of the field aperture are in focus. In the
lower image the Z-module was moved 12 steps away from the home position (about two
dioptres), therefore the edges are no longer in focus.

Out of focus

Therefore, for a fast test, just check if the edges of the field aperture are in focus. Please note:
as the intermediate plane is fixed to the camera, this image is independent of the actual
refraction setting.

5.5.2 Reset procedure and further test of the Z-module

In addition to moving the motor by single steps, also a reset procedure can be started from the
HRA service window (Ctrl & Alt & Shift & D, see section 6.1.1), just by clicking onto the reset
button next to the step display. If the module is working correctly, the structures in the live
image (edges of the field aperture) first move slowly out of focus, then disappear completely
and finally come back to the original position.
A more sophisticated test of the Z-module can be started from the Z-module window in the
HeScript software (start button). This test accomplishes 100 moves (step width < 127, direction
arbitrary) and always computes its actual step position. At the end of this cycle, the z -module
moves back to the end–switch, and then the position, where the end-switch actually was hit is
compared with the expected end-switch position. From this comparison, the number of lost
steps can be calculated.

5.6 Calibration of the refraction adjustment

When the camera is set to acquisition mode, the actual refraction setting is displayed in the
acquisition window on the computer monitor. The position of the camera is encoded by a
longitudinal potentiometer. The calibration of the refraction adjustment can be checked as
follows:
 The refraction range in the myopic direction is usually limited somewhere between -12
and -14 dioptres.
 The internal lens reflection (artefact in IR images) is in focus at a dioptre position of -6 to
– 5 dioptres.
 A movement of 1 mm corresponds roughly to a refraction change of 1 dioptres.
 The 0 dioptres position corresponds to a potentiometer position between -13 mm and -
15 mm
This can be checked in the refraction window of the HeScript software.

 At the end of the calibration an automatic test will be done. The fast toggle between the
HRA image and the both OCT images (Volume scan of horizontal and vertical OCT B-
Scans) allows a visual control of the remaining errors. A quantitative value of this
remaining error will be displayed (Mean Error H und V). If the remaining errors are
displayed in green, the values are inside the tolerance. Otherwise the calibration has to
be repeated.
 After successful calibration the OCT scanner calibration report has to be printed, in order
to document the test results obtained with the corresponding scanner parameter.
 Very important: In order to save the calibration values press the Accept button.

5.7.2 Test of the safety thresholds of the OCT-Scanner
As soon as the scan angles of the OCT scanners drop below 13.5°, a safety shut down occurs
in order to limit the SLD intensity on the retina.

The procedure below allows to test the shut down for a X-scan angle (resp. Y.scan angle) of
13°, as well as the proper functioning of the scanners at angles of 14°, i.e. above the shut down
threshold.
Open the HeScript “OCT Safety Startup” function. Than check the 4 different test scans.

5.8 Quality of an OCT image

In order to judge the quality of the instrument performance after installation, a test examination
(IR-reflection and OCT image) of a test eye (eye of a person with clear ocular media and
without strong astigmatism) should be accomplished. To better judge the image quality, these
images should be taken without ART-modus: Just freeze an image on the screen by leaving the
live modus. The following criteria allow the evaluation of the images:
A quality value is calculated by the software, which is a relative measure for the signal to noise
ratio of the OCT image. In the example below the quality is 34. For a healthy eye typically
quality values between 32-38 are obtained¸ when the OCT image is shifted to the upper range
of the OCT display window. Document the measured quality-values of a test examination; the
lowest accepted value (lower limit ) is 30 (without ART-Modus).
Please note: This value replaces the former SNR value. For same image quality, the former
SNR value was typically about 5 units higher than the quality value, due to a different
mathematical algorithm.

For comparison, the quality value as it is reported in the Installation and Service Report should
be assessed in the following imaging mode:
 Horizontal line scan
 High resolution mode (HR)
 Section scan, 30°
 No ART mode
The camera should be properly aligned to a healthy eye as is indicated by a sharp and evenly
illuminated IR image. The OCT image should appear in the upper third of the OCT screen.
Avoid any folding along the top of the OCT image. Freezing the image makes it easier to assess
the image quallity value especially if you exam your own eye.
As a rough estimate a quality value of > 35 is a sign of optimum OCT performance. Quality
values less than 32 should be evaluated in more detail (compare value to HE data sheet, check
spectrometer performance, section 5.9.4).
Inherent to all spectral domain OCT devices there is a drop in resolution and image quality with
depth. To access the drop in image quality, proceed as is described above but move the
camera further away from the eye in order to position the OCT image within the lower half of the
OCT screen.

5.9 OCT Spectrometer

5.9.1 General remarks

The upper level of the power supply box of all Spectralis systems with OCT consists of the
spectrometer unit. The OCT signal from the Spectralis camera is detected by the spectrometer
and then transferred and pre-processed by the stack on the OCT base plate.
The optical fiber from the camera is inserted into the spectrometer, the collimated light beam is
then impinging on a diffraction grating. The diffracted beam is focused by a lens to generate a
line image. This line image has to match the sensor line exactly in order to be detected. Due to
the very small pixel size of the detector (14 microns in height) the adjustment of the grating and
the adjustment of the sensor itself is crucial.
fiber input collimating lens diffraction grating

sensor focusing set micrometer screw

line lens screws with piezo drive

The line which is imaged onto the line sensor will drift vertically during operation due to thermal
effects. The piezo drive of the diffraction grating mount should compensate for this drift
automatically. The actual piezo setting is displayed on the service screen.
During installation or service check the power delivered by the fiber into the spectrometer
should be measured. Moreover the correct alignment of the spectrometer should be verified or
re-established.

5.9.2 Measuring the output of the spectrometer fiber

To measure the SLD power delivered to the spectrometer a small fiber adapter is provided
which fits the HE-adapter for the objective. It allows to exclude any stray light which would
otherwise influence the measurement due to the very low signal power.

Proceed as follows:
 If not already done open the power supply housing.
 Unscrew the fiber from the spectrometer, avoid touching the fiber tip!
 Mount the fiber into the fiber adapter and closely place it in the objective adapter.

 Set the Ophir power meter to the wavelength 880 nm and to the range 3 µW, averaging
is not required.

The measured output power should lie within 1.5 to 3 µW, the individual value is stated in
the data sheet.

5.9.4 How to assess spectrometer performance

To ensure optimum performance of the spectrometer the correct piezo setting, a proper
alignment of the sensor line and a proper focus setting should be checked.
Start OCT image acquisition by selecting IR + OCT on the touch panel. Open the OCT service
window by pressing Ctrl & Alt & Shift & O (see section 6.1.2) at the same time. The service
window is displaying an actual A-Scan image, i.e. one line detector output. In a proper setting,
the spectrum curve is displayed. On the basis of this curve the sensor alignment and –to some
degree- the focus adjustment can be assessed.

5.9.4.1 Piezo setting

Every time IR + OCT is pressed on the touch screen, the auto calibration will start. This
procedure can take some seconds (or only a split second) depending on the grade of
misalignment or drift. During this procedure the piezo is successively adjusted starting at 0 and
running upwards to find an optimum signal intensity on the detector (auto piezo is checked by
default and should not be unchecked).

In a proper setting the piezo will stop in the middle range, the detailed value depending on the
initial setting and the temperature of the power supply boy as well. A setting between 0.2 and
0.7 is appropriate. Then, the normalized spectrum will be displayed on the service screen.
In most Spectralis systems thermal effects during operation have to be compensated by an
increased value of the piezo setting. After some hours of operation the optimum piezo setting
will have been run from about 0.300 to a somewhat larger value (0.600 e.g.). If the Piezo has
been run to 1.0 and no spectrum is visible, the signal most probable has been run out of the
adjustable piezo range. Please proceed as is described in chapter Service Procedures.

5.9.4.2 Alignment of the sensor

To assess the spectrum shape switch to circular scan mode. In the service screen uncheck live
and normalize. This will switch off the automatic recalibration and normalization of the spectrum
data. The actual spectrum can now be compared to the spectrum data sheet delivered with
each device.
Two main features of the spectrum should be assessed: a constant spectrum shape throughout
a piezo adjustment and the total height of the curve.
Set the piezo slider to 0.0 and slowly move upwards manually. As you do so, the spectrum will
arise, maximize and then decrease again. During this procedure the shape of the curve should
Spectralis Service M anual
Art.No. 96 049-006 Page37 of 161
not vary substantially. Otherwise the sensor line is (even only slightly) tilted with respect to the
line image given by the focussing lens of the spectrometer.

Piezo: 0.150 Piezo: 0.230 Piezo: 0.280

5.9.4.3 Focus check

It is crucial, that the sensor line is exactly in the focus of the focussing lens in the spectrometer.
If the focus is adjusted properly, the signal of the spectrum curve is at maximum.
Assess the spectrum shape in the service screen. Uncheck live and normalize, select circular
scan mode.
Either move the slider manually to find the position of maximum signal intensity (due to
hysteresis start always at 0.0 and move upwards!) or press the Auto Calib for automatic
detection. For the latter uncheck live and normalize again. The signal intensity value at the
curve‟s maximum can now be compared to the data sheet value. A decrease in signal intensity
of up to 20% is within the normal range. If the decrease in signal intensity is substantially larger
drift of the focal plane might be the cause.

5.9.4.4 SNR drop of OCT-signal into depth

Note: The SNR value has now changed into Q value. However, the procedure is the same.

Mount OCT test target horizontal, not tilted. Set reference arm length in IR+OCT mode to get
the OCT image not inverted and as much as possible up to the OCT-Frame. The peaks must
not touch the upper frame. Note the Q-value (upper range), in the example 60,0.
Than increase the length of the reference arm by 8 steps (click to Ref. Arm- Slider, press 8 x -
key). The OCT-image of the reference arm will be displayed in the lower part of the OCT-
Frame. Note the Q-value (  ), in this example it´s 48,6.

A maximum Q drop of 15 is acceptable, (in the example it‟s: 11,4 ).

6.3.2 Safety Interlock

In the case of an safety interlock, the last interlock numbers are displayed. There are three
coarse interlock Types:
1. Scanner Interlock x- or y-scanner malfunction.
2. Laser Interlock Monitor diode in camera detects too much (blue) laser intensity.
3. MCU Interlock The firmware has detected an erroneous or inconsistent internal state.
This Interlock type is only displayed when whether 1) nor 2) applies.
Note that the blue laser supply voltage is switched off (“-” instead of “L”) while the HECOM

6.4.4 Touch Panel

The left column shows the touch screen calibration values. These values should be identical to
the ones in hra2.ini once the acquisition module is started.

Buttons in the right column:

a. Start touch panel calibration. Press all appearing crosses as precisely as you can. The
calibration information is stored on the PC. It is therefore necessary to start the
acquisition module for a persistent calibration. Otherwise all calibration data are lost
when the panel is switched off or disconnected.
b. Set only the touch panel to service mode. This allows starting the camera without
acquisition module and without disabling of security features. Note: In service mode,
every laser mode can be selected even if it makes no sense at the current
angiography filter setting.
c. Unlock the panel operation (if it is locked due to an interlock of a busy acquisition
module).

6.5 HeScript Service Program

For special service procedures (e.g. initial setup, configuration and testing) a software tool
called “HeScript” is used. This software is not part of the Spectralis product software (as the
Heidelberg Eye Explorer and the Spectralis acquisition and viewing modules). Typically this
tool is provided by Heidelberg Engineering on a CD-ROM to trained technical service persons
who want to perform service procedures at the customers site.

6.5.1 Starting the program

To start the service tool program insert the Service CD and wait for auto-
run or run HESCRIPT.EXE manually.
Select “hra2.dev” from the list of devices shown in the startup dialog,
check the language setting and click on “OK”.

6.5.2 Z-Module
Start the service program as described above and click on the “Startup” menu.

Double-click on the procedure “Startup”, “HAR 2

Startup” and than to “Z-Module”. The following
dialog will appear:

The z-stepper control (1) allows to move the

internal z-module step by step. The refractive
power corresponding to the current z-module
position is displayed in diopters. Note that this
module directly accesses the z-module while
bypassing upper firmware layers. Therefore it
is necessary to perform a z-module reset
before resuming to normal system operation
if the stepper position was changed
manually.

The second control (2) allows a simple stepper

random walk test. The first entry is the number
of stepper movements to be performed, the
second entry determines the maximum number
of steps of a single stepper move.

6.5.3 Safety Configurations

Start the service program as described above and click on the “Startup” menu.
Double-click on the procedure “Adjusting scanner amplitudes”. The following dialog will appear:

Line (1) allows to set the blue laser power to 100 resp. 125%. Check the box to update the
current monitor voltages at a regular interval.

Line (2) and (3) show the current thresholds of the internal diode lasers for IR and ICGA. Check
the respective box to update the laser currents at a regular interval.

Button (4) stops the y-scanner.

6.5.4 HRA Service Mode

For service and troubleshooting of the Spectralis system it might be required to temporarily
ignore errors or security interlocks in case of technical problems. To do this, start the HeScript
application as described above and click on the “Startup” menu:

As soon as you enable the “HRA Service mode” checkmark, the Spectralis system will enter the
service mode and will show up the following behaviour:
1. A detected “Scanner-Interlock” or “Laser-Interlock” will be ignored by the HRA firmware,
but it will not be ignored be the blue laser in the power supply. In this case, the laser light
will go off, but the system does not go to its interlock state.
2. A detected “MCU-Interlock” will be ignored by the HRA firmware. In this case, the blue
laser will not be affected and stays on.
3. Any interlock detected will be shown as warning message only (yellow colour) in the PC
acquisition module status bar.
4. Image acquisition is disabled as long as service mode is on.
5. The background of the acquisition module dialog is shown in pink
6. The LCD display on the Power Supply will periodically show the message “SERVICE
MODE, DO NOT USE THE SYSTEM!”
7. Power supply and camera are periodically sending debug messages (see “Service
Panel” in chapter “PC Acquisition module” for more information on debug messages).

VERY IMPORTANT:
NEVER EXPOSE A PATIENT TO THE LASER BEAM WHILE “SERVICE MODE” IS
ACTIVE BECAUSE OF THE REDUCED SECURITY LEVEL!

6.5.4.1 PC Acquisition Module Behaviour in Service Mode

If the Spectralis system is in “Service Mode”, the background of the acquisition module dialog
will be shown in pink colour:

7.1.2 Status message “Camera busy. Please wait...” always shown

If this message is shown permanently in the status bar of the acquisition module and the SLO
image is black, then probably the Z-module has got stuck and could not reach its home position.
Please contact technical service on how to solve the problem.

7.1.3 System does not enter FREEZE mode (can’t switch off)
This can have different reasons:
 Shortly after first entering a live mode after system start a change back to FREEZE is
not possible for some seconds. This is normal behaviour.
 An interlock has occurred. An interlock number is shown in AQM status bar and an the
power supply LCD. The interlock cause must be removed (see section 9.1.1).
 The HRA stepper is stuck (see section 7.1.2).

7.1.4 The touch panel does not respond

If the touch panel does not respond properly (panel does not react to touch input or other than
the expected buttons are triggered on touch), a recalibration is recommended. See section 8.7.2
on how to do this.
If the calibration fails multiple times, Look into the file hra2.ini (Heidelberg Eye Explorer plugins
directory e.g. C:\HEYEX\plugins). The section [TouchPanel] should contain lines like
a=-24200
b=345
c=18200
d=-26
SerialNo=9999
The actual numbers may differ up to about 15%. The entry under „SerialNum‟ must match the
actual touch panel serial number. If the numbers differ much from the above example, the
calibration is probably wrong. In this case:
* Close the acquisition module, if open.
* In hra2.ini, section [TouchPanel], enter the standard calibration values from above
and make sure that the serial number is right.
* Save hra2.ini and start the acquisition module again
After this, the touch panel should work quite well, even if the calibration is not perfect. If the
problems persist, please contact Heidelberg Engineering support.

7.1.5 Touch panel screen is dark or flipped

 Loosen the screws on the touch panel housing and open it.
 Check if the module has power (green LEDs are on) and if it plays a signature sound
when switched on (to see if the MCU is working).
o If the green LED is not on, check the touch panel power cable
o If the LED is on but the sound is not audible, the controller board is defective,
contact Heidelberg Engineering technical service for a spare part.
Spectralis Service M anual
Art.No. 96 049-006 Page63 of 161
 If the check was OK, The ribbon cable that connects LCD screen and controller board
could be loose. Detach the ribbon cable from the connector and carefully plug it in again.
Ensure that the lock is closed properly.

Check this
cable !

7.1.6 Status message “Computer video system is currently busy...” is shown

This message may be shown sporadically. If it is shown frequently or all the time, it could
indicate a poor graphics board or a wrong graphics device driver installation.

7.1.7 System does not enter live mode, even in service mode.
Possible Cause: The camera could not finish initialisation of the power supply because the
scanner interlock line was not active on system start. This may be caused by a faulty controller
board or by a defective x- or y-scanner. Please contact Heidelberg Engineering technical
service.

7.1.8 Message “SECURITY-INTERLOCK (No. N): Device must be restarted!” is

shown on acquisition module status bar.
A security relevant event has been detected by the security units of the device and the system
has entered a safe state. Please see section 9.1.2 for a complete list of possible security
interlock codes. Restart the device electrically and contact Heidelberg Engineering technical
service if the problem persists.

7.1.9 MCU Interlock No. 31

MCU Interlock No. 31 (only) is displayed when trying to go from FREEZE to live mode after
switching on the machine.
The Sapphire interface board (“HRA2 Sapphire Controller”) might be defective. Please contact
Heidelberg Engineering technical service.

7.1.10 MCU Interlocks No. 29 and/or 30

MCU Interlocks No. 29 and/or 30 are displayed when first trying to go from FREEZE to a live
mode after switching on the machine (the power supply LCD displays only the last interlock No.
30).
Spectralis Service M anual
Art.No. 96 049-006 Page64 of 161

Possible Cause: The sapphire laser does not react to interlocks; this in turn may have the
following reasons.
a) The DIP-Switches on the sapphire laser board are wrongly set.
b) Jumper 2 (Interlock 29) and/or Jumper 3 (Interlock 30) are set on the Sapphire
interface board (“HRA2 Sapphire Controller”);
c) The blue laser interface board (“HRA2 Sapphire Controller”) is defective;
Further Diagnostics:
a) Check if DIP-switches 2, 3, and 5 on sapphire board are set to ON and
DIP-switches 1, 4, and 6 to OFF.
b) Check J2 and J3 on “HRA2 Sapphire Controller”
Possible Solution:
a) Set DIP-Switches on sapphire board sapphire board to this configuration:

1, 4, 6 OFF; 2, 3, 5 ON
b) Remove J2 and J3 on “HRA2 Sapphire Controller”
c) The Sapphire interface board (“HRA2 Sapphire Controller”) might be defective.
Please contact Heidelberg Engineering technical service.
Spectralis Service M anual
Art.No. 96 049-006 Page65 of 161

7.1.11 Blue Laser (FA/RF) does not work

No interlock is indicated, but error 257 (warmup=error 256 + error 001) resp. error 001 is shown
on the display. This means, the system itself is not in an interlock state, but the sapphire laser
only shows an interlock.
Possible Cause: The ribbon cable coming from the power supply controller (lower part of the
power supply) to the sapphire controller (board, which is mounted perpendicular to the Coherent
Controller sandwich) is squeezed when the housing was closed.
Further Diagnostics: Check the cable, it should be a one by one connection.
Possible Solution: Replace the cable, repair the cable, check the connection of the cable on
both ends.

7.1.12 HEYEX crashes without error message

When opening the Spectralis viewing window in 3D view the Heyex crashes without any
notification (error message) and the Heyex disappears completely from the screen.
Possible Cause:
a) The implementation of OpenGL in the graphics drivers might cause this behaviour.
b) The Spectralis software installation was not properly completed.
Possible Solution:
a) Update graphics drivers.
b) Reinstall Spectralis Software.

7.1.13 Viewer error 522

Viewer does not open an examination and instead shows error 522.
Cause: During acquisition with an acquisition module before version 3.1.4, some OCT scans
were erroneously not stored.
Solution: Use acquisition module 3.1.4 or higher. Viewer versions newer than 3.1.0 support the
display of such incomplete examinations.

The refraction display on the screen is not correct. E.g. the best images for an
evensighted (emmetropic) patient is acquired at a wrong positive or negative refraction
setting.
Procedure to locate error:
 Wrong focus for all HRA laser sources or only one laser affected
 Check the HRA-Z-modul (see 5.5)
 Check the refraction adjustment (see 5.6)

8 Service Procedures

8.1 HRA FA Laser

8.1.1 TSE-02 power sensor for adjustment procedures

Detector head
Choice of with HRA 2
Scale
laser to be adaptor
monitored

This TSE sensor is only an adjustment tool but not a powermeter. During installation the
laser powers have to be checked with a calibrated Ophir power meter!
The adjustment is used in the adjustment process after reinsertion of the fiber into the 4 axis
manipulator during the setup of the system. In this case the use of the TSE-02 is advantageous,
as the display is slow enough to average the power fluctuations due to the laser modulation.
Procedure:
 Place detector head on the objective
 Switch the TSE-02 knob to FA.
 Operate the HRA 2 at 30°, HS in either FA or RF mode.
 Adjust the Kinematics four axis manipulator according to the short or detailed adjustment
instructions (v.i.) so that the scale reading reaches its maximum. (As a rule of thumb for
a correctly installed fiber the reading should be in between 4.5 and 6 scale units.)

8.1.2 Beam path of blue laser, AOM

When the modulation is disabled (e.g. by disconnecting the RF-power from the AOM drive, all
laser power is transmitting the AOM crystal (acousto-optical modulator) without being deflected.
This beam is called 0. order beam.
However, when the modulation is activated, the blue laser beam is split in several beams. The
beam next to the 0. order beam (left side) is the 1. order beam and is coupled into the single
mode fiber.

8.1.3 Laser to Fiber Coupler

The laser power is coupled by means of a four axis manipulator into the polarisation maintaining
singlemode fiber. The fiber is fixed with respect to the focussing lens. Therefore a tilt of the
coupling cylinder corresponds to a translation of the focus spot on the fiber surface.

8.1.4 Realignment of Blue Laser Fiber Coupling

In case the laser output power in FA / redfree Refl. mode is too low, the alignment of the fibre
input coupler has to be readjusted and optimised (short procedure). If no blue light at all is
visible at the objective, the complete procedure starting with the prealignment tool has to be
accomplished.
Please note: for the alignment procedure the TSE power sensor is extremely helpful, as the
display is slow enough to average the laser power fluctuations due to laser modulation.
Alignment procedure in detail:

 Inserting the fiber: Push down spring button E, while inserting the fiber input coupler.
Make sure, that the polarization key E fits into the keyway F of the fiber carrier.
 During alignment procedure laser power can either be monitored using adjustment aid
TSE-02 (to be preferred) or by periodic averaging over a 10s time scale (takes much
more time). Attach the sensor to the HRA2 objective lens.
 Tilt alignment: Optimise A1 & B1 for optimum fibre output.
 Horizontal translation: (only required if previous step does not result in sufficient laser
power). Although the tilt of the input optic is optimised, the alignment still can be
improved by translating the input optic in horizontal or vertical direction. For horizontal
translation adjust the screws A1 and A2 stepwise in the same direction, i.e. adjust A1 a
quarter of a turn counter clockwise. The output power will go down completely. Then
adjust A2 in same direction also about a quarter of a turn and maximize output power. If
the power is higher than in the beginning, repeat the procedure in the same direction. If
the power decreased repeat the procedure in the other direction i.e. clockwise. If the
power does not change significantly, the optimum has been found
 Vertical Translation: (only required if previous steps do not result in sufficient laser
power). Repeat the same procedure (horizontal translation) for vertical translation by
manipulating the screws B1 and B2.
 Carefully secure all the alignment screws A1….B2 by tightening the locking nuts. The
locking nuts should not be tightened too much, it should be still possible to manipulate
the alignment screws in a small range.
 The FA power of the Spectralis is in general less sensitive to temperature changes
inside the housing. Nevertheless we recommend to close the cover and recheck the
laser power after about 30 minutes. If necessary, reopen the housing and optimise A1
and B1 again.
Please note: In case no output power at all can be measured after inserting the fiber coupler,
the optimisation procedure can not be accomplished. In this case a special prealignment tool is
required for the coarse alignment. In doubt, please contact Heidelberg engineering for technical
support.

8.2 OCT Spectrometer

NOTE! Before you do a piezo, sensor or focus adjustment, verify the correct setup of the unit,
means a proper attachment of the fiber, correct SLD power, no communication error etc.
Especially the focus adjustment is typically not necessary, unless the srews of the focus lens
itself is loosen, or if you have replaced the sensor board AND the SNR drop into depth is more
than 15dB. Typically this will happen in very rare cases, because the sensor board is always
mounted to the almost closest position to the focus lens. The focus adjustment is a very delicate
procedure. Our experience showed, there is no need to do the focus adjustment.

Pre-stressed bolt from the grating unit: In the very first units
the pre-stressed bolt was not enough pre-stressed in some
cases. In such a case the spectrum dropped down right after
the auto calibration. In such cases we may gave the advise to
tighten the screw a little bit. We have recognized this very
fast and changed our installation process of the grating unit,
and tightened the bolt a bit more. So there is absolute no
need to do this. Even worse, you can damage the piezo by
doing that.

8.2.1 Piezo adjustment

If the Piezo slider in the OCT service screen is not within the acceptable range, the micrometer
screw has to be adjusted manually.
 If not already done open the power supply box carefully.
 Check the actual piezo setting by pressing Auto Calib

Micrometer
screw

If the piezo setting is at its upper limit (1.0 or near), the micrometer screw has to be turned very
slightly and very slowly clockwise.
Spectralis Service M anual
Art.No. 96 049-006 Page90 of 161

NOTE: One complete turn of the micrometer screw corresponds to a shift of 500 microns. What
is required is a shift of about 10 microns – corresponding to a rotation of only a few degrees!
 Check the new piezo setting by pressing Auto Calib
If the system has been run for some hours (temperature BP > 34°C) the slider should be in the
upper range (0.600), for a cold system (temperature BP < 29°C) the maximum signal should be
at a slider position of about 0.300. Don‟t adjust a system if the temperature BP is less than
25°C.
If the piezo setting is too large, turn the micrometer screw clockwise. Correspondingly, if it‟s too
low, turn the micrometer screw counterclockwise.
 Adjust and check repeatedly until the slider is within the acceptable range.
If you have lost the signal completely within the whole piezo range (Auto Calib runs to 1.0
without detection of a signal) proceed as follows:
 Adjust the piezo slider manually to 0.5
 Mark the micrometer screw at it‟s actual position or note down the actual setting (don‟t
skip this point!).
 Turn the micrometer screw very slowly clockwise while observing the service screen.
 Stop if you have reached 10 units of rotation (corresponding to 100µm or one-fifth turn)
or
 stop immediately in case you got a signal.
 Press “Auto Calib”
 If no signal can be found within the 10 units go back to the original setting (10 units ccw)
 Turn the micrometer screw 10 units counterclockwise and proceed as before

Note: It‟s barely conceivable that there is no signal within the specified range ( 10 units).
Before you expand the search range you should assess that the SLD is on (red line/circle is
visible if you look into the camera) the power of the spectrometer fiber and a proper attachment
of the fiber to the spectrometer. Moreover, make sure that there is no communication error: the
service screen has to display a live background signal, i.e. a flat noisy line. If you uncheck
subtract Zero this becomes more evident.

Noisy background signal

8.2.2 Sensor alignment

The alignment of the sensor is a procedure which is only allowed after consultation with HE.
The misalignment must be reported with screenshots. Please send at least two screenshots of
the service screen demonstrating the spectrum curve at different piezo settings. Please select
appropriate service screen settings: uncheck live and normalize.
As an example of how to report sensor misalignment see figures below.

Piezo: 0.290 Piezo: 0.400 Piezo: 0.470

An unacceptable case of sensor tilt is shown below. Only a small portion of the sensor line is
illuminated due to a large tilt between the sensor line and the image line generated by the
focussing lens of the spectrometer.

To align the sensor proceed as follows:

 In the service screen uncheck live and normalize.
 Loose the set screw slightly, there should still remain some resistance against rotation.
 Now carefully grab the sensor board or the brass adapter and slighty turn the sensor
unit.
 While moving the sensor unit observe the spectrum curve in the service screen: it should
become as broadened as is possible.
 Move the piezo slider to identify any tilt.
 Repeatedly turn the sensor unit and check for tilt.
 At optimum position tighten the screw very carefully but solidly.
 Finally re-check the spectrum shape while moving the piezo slider.
 Repeat the whole procedure in case there still is any tilt.
Spectralis Service M anual
Art.No. 96 049-006 Page92 of 161
 Report the final spectrum shape to HE with at least two screenshots of different piezo
settings (s. above).
 Compare the maximum spectrum with the HE data sheet. If necessary proceed with the
adjustment of focus.

8.2.3 How to replace carrier and sensor board

If there is a problem with the carrier- and/or the sensor board, you have to replace both boards.
This is highly recommended, because the two boards are set up and adjusted to each other
here in factory. If you mix you will get a lower image quality.

The sensor of the sensor board is covered with a glass plate!

Remove it carefully by bending up the two copper strips with a very small flat screw driver.

Save the glass plate and put it later to the sensor of the defective sensor board. Remove the
brass cylinder from the defective sensor board and install it on the new sensor board. Use the
original shipping box for the return shipment.

Finally replace and adjust the boards as described in the chapter before.
Spectralis Service M anual
Art.No. 96 049-006 Page94 of 161

8.2.4 Focus adjustment

The adjustment of focus is a procedure which is only allowed after consultation with HE. The
necessity to adjust the focus has to be deduced from the fault tree (LI).
To adjust the sensor proceed as follows:
 In the service screen uncheck live and normalize. Select circular scan mode.
 Loosen the two set screws of the focussing lens. The signal will decrease immediately
due to the fact, that the objective is no longer clamped down, however by adjusting the
piezo slider it can be brought back to the condition it was before.
 Carefully grab the brass objective (in order to grab it easier, we recommend to screw in
a M3 screw into the upper thread) and very carefully move the objective towards the
sensor board and / or in opposite direction.
 Optimise the piezo slider to evaluate if the maximum is higher or lower as before.
Therefore it is best to have one hand at the brass objective and the other at the mouse
to make sure, that the piezo is always at the position of maximum signal.
 Once the optimum position is found, the objective is clamped down again by means of
the two set screws. Again the signal will drop, but can be brought back to the optimum
position by readjusting the piezo slider.
NOTE: If the piezo slider runs out of range the micrometer screw has to be used to bring
the signal back to it‟s optimum (s. Piezo adjustment).

This is a cumbersome procedure, however it is very important, that the focus is really optimum
adjusted in order to provide optimum quality of the OCT images.

8.9 HRA Firmware Update

8.9.1 IModule Firmware Update

All Spectralis devices are connected to the computer via FireWire (also called IEEE-1394 or
i.LINK) interface and are digitising the image data within the Spectralis power supply. The
electronics board responsible for the digitisation and transmission via FireWire is called
“IModule” (also integrated into the HRT 3 device). This module provides a powerful processor
and has two programmable software components that can be updated using the HESCRIPT
service program. Models with integrated OCT also provide a so called IModule-D which is
digitising the data from the OCT sensor. This must be set up separately (see 8.10.1).
The IModule includes two software components: Bootloader and Application. To check the
current version of these components, start the service program as described in section 6.5.1
and click on the “Startup” menu. Then select procedure “IModule configuration” and “Startup
HRA IModule”. The following dialog will be shown:

Check bootloader version (entry “BL Version”) and application version (entry “APP Version”)
and compare with the version provided with the latest HeScript service CD.
The example device contains an invalid bootloader as well as an invalid Application Firmware.
This is indicated by red entries in the corresponding fields.
As required, the IModule bootloader and application firmware must be updated from within the
“IModule configuration” dialog. Click on “Browse…”(1) and a file selection box will be opened:

8.9.2 Camera and Power Supply Firmware Update

To update the Spectralis HRA internal firmware, you will need the following parts:
1. A Firmware update file with file extension *.HFU (typically on the HeScript service CD)
2. An up-to-date HeScript service CD

Start the service program as described in section 6.5.1 and click on the “Startup” menu. The
following dialog will appear:

Double-click on the procedure “HRA2 Startup”. The firmware upload script will be loaded
automatically.

8.9.2.1 Installing the LPT Driver

The HeScript program also supports firmware upgrade for older HRA 2 device, which are
connected to the PC via framegrabber board and serial interface instead of IEEE1394 FireWire.
The firmware update for those devices can be performed using a special programming device
called HE-ISPD-JP1 that is connected to the parallel port.
HeScript always requires the installation of the driver for HE-ISPD-JP1, even if you want to
update a Spectralis device connected with FireWire.
If the parallel port driver for the HE-ISPD-JP1 device is
not installed, the message box displayed on the left will
be shown.
If the dialog does not open up automatically,
browse to the Service CD folder “BIN\ LPTdriver”,
click with the right mouse button on file
“TVICPORT.INF” and select “Install” from the
context menu.

Please note, that you must have administrative user privileges on Windows to be able to install
the driver. After the driver installation, the computer must be rebooted.

8.9.2.2 Upgrading the Firmware

If the LPT driver is successfully installed select the procedure “HRA2 startup” again. The
following dialog will appear:

Click on the “Browse…” button (1) in section

“Camera/Power Supply”, change to directory
“firmware-HRA2”, select the firmware file
“HRA2-Firmware-x.y.z.hfu” (where x.y.z
represents the firmware version) for upload
and click on “Open”:
The complete path and file name of the
firmware update file will be shown in the
“Firmware Upload” dialog.

NOTE: Close all other running

applications before upload. Do not stop
the program or disconnect the cable
before the “Firmware Upload” dialog
closes automatically. Any interrupt in the
programming procedure may cause
serious damage to the electronic circuits
of the HRA2 or Spectralis device!

Click on the “Start CAM/PWS firmware upload …” button (2). A new dialog will be shown in red
colour:

After the upload procedure has been finished, select procedure “Firmware-, Flash- and Board
Versions” (see section “Collecting Version Information” below) to verify the upload process.

Important note: In some rare cases the firmware

upload process may get stuck in the finishing
procedure at 20%, see example on the right side. If
the process will not continue after 30 seconds, turn
off the power supply box and turn it on again after 5
seconds. Now the process must continue and
complete. This problem may occur only in the
HRA- firmware upload.

Make sure that “Finishing” is displayed in the dialog box. Power cycling the device in any other
firmware upgrade phase may damage permanently damage the electronics.

8.10 OCT Firmware Update

8.10.1 IModule-D Firmware Update

Spectralis models with integrated OCT provide a so called IModule-D which is digitising the data
from the OCT sensor.
The IModule-D includes two software components: Bootloader and Application. To check the
current version of these components, start the service program as described in section 6.5.1
and click on the “Startup” menu. Then select procedure “IModule configuration” and “Startup
IModule-D”. The following dialog will be shown:

Check bootloader version (entry “BL Version”) and application version (entry “APP Version”)
and compare with the version provided with the latest HeScript service CD.
The example device contains a valid bootloader as well as a valid Application Firmware. In this
case, a firmware update would not be required.
Otherwise, if required, the IModule-D bootloader and application firmware can be updated from
within the “IModule Configuration” dialog.

A list of available firmware files will be displayed. Choose the most recent vme file. This
typically follows the naming convention x-x-x-x_SD-OCT.vme.

IMPORTANT: The HRA device (IEEE1394a connection) MUST be

disconnected by pulling the IEEE1394a plug before you proceed! Not
doing so may result in severe damage to the device!

Now the default Firmware upload dialogue will pop up. This may not be interrupted while
uploading the firmware file, else it might result in inoperability of the device.
If you encounter an IModule Error during the flash reboot the device close the HeScript
program and try again.

After flashing the firmware, the OCT module will perform a reset and therefore it won‟t be
responsive for a certain time. During the reset you can plug in the HRA (IEEE1394a
connector) again.

8.11 Other Procedures

8.11.1 Procedure to clean the objective

The objective should be cleaned, if dust, grease, mascara or other dirt is visible on the front
surface. In order to judge the condition of the optical surface, remove the objective from the
bayonet connector and hold it under inclined incident light.
We recommend the following procedure to clean the objective:
 first use clean air to blow away any dust or dirt particles
 then use a clean, soft (non fuzzing) tissue, which should be moisturised with some
drops of pure ethanol. Carefully wipe with the tissue over the lens. Use each tissue
only once!
 Sometimes the dirt cannot be dissolved with ethanol. In this case try pure acetone
to remove persistent spots. Again, it is recommended not to use too much liquid, and
do not drip excess acetone on the objective. Acetone could corrode the lens cement
or etch the plastic jacket of fibers.

8.11.2 Procedure “OCT-error 914 or 915”

Error 915 and 914 refers to the reference module, which determines the length of the OCT
reference arm.

 Error 915 means: Reference module does not reach home switch.
Possible error: motor defective, spindle too ruff-running, guidance jammed.
 Error 914 means: reference Module jammed at home switch.
Possible error: home switch defect.
Please note: these errors could be also consecutive errors from other faults during the OCT
start-up procedure (e.g. error 313: missing line clock).

Recommended procedure:
1. Open the camera housing as described in section 8.3.1.
2. Move the spindle manually with a small screwdriver. The Reference Module is located at
the backside of the camera covered by a metallic sheet.

3. In case of error 914: rotate spindle with screw driver some turns counter clockwise in
order to move the home switch pin away from the home switch. Turn on the OCT system
and check if the reset procedure is accomplished properly (no error 914).

4. In case of error 915: rotate spindle with screw driver some turns clockwise in order to
move the home switch pin away from the limit opposite to the home switch. Turn on the
OCT system and check if the reset procedure is accomplished properly (no error 915).

5. Note: These procedures only help to reset the system, if the reference module is stuck
either at the home switch (error 914) or at the opposite end of the travel range (error
915). If the original cause of this problem is not clear, one has to be afraid, that the
problem could reoccur.

9 Appendix
9.1 Safety Interlocks and Error Codes

9.1.1 HRA Safety Interlocks

General errors/warnings are reported via HECOM and shown in the PC status bar. There are 4
severity levels:
 Information
 Warning A system parameter is near its limits
 Error An irregular system state is detected
--> System may go to freeze mode
 Severe Error A safety relevant error is detected
--> Safety interlock
Safety relevant errors are additionally reported via the interlock lines. When a security interlock
is reached, the system cannot be used any more before it is switched off and on again.
A Safety Interlock has the following consequences:

Camera
 The current laser mode can‟t be changed any more. In particular it is no longer possible
to switch to freeze mode
 The internal fixation target can‟t be changed any more
 The fixation targets in all four corners are blinking
 All lasers are switched off
Note: If an Interlock occurs during a live mode, the Scanners will not be switched off (the
system state is safer with the scanners moving)!

Power supply
 The blue laser supply voltage will be switched off (The “L” on the LCD display changes
to “-”)
 One of three interlock types will be displayed:
o LASER INTERLOCK Blue laser power was too high either when the laser was
modulated or modulated off
o SCANNER INTERLOCK One of the scanners does not work properly
o MCU INTERLOCK One micro controller has detected an irregular internal
state. This type is overruled by laser or scanner interlock.
 The last internal (left side) and external interlock number will be displayed

Touch Panel
 The freeze screen is shown. A red on/off button and a textual warning indicate the
interlock state. The panel is locked.

PC Acquisition Module
 A list of interlock numbers is shown. Note that consecutive faults may be included.

9.1.4 OCT Module Run Time Error Codes

OCT run time errors are reversible, that means that the system can be used again if the error
cause is removed, without switching it off and on again.

This table includes all OCT errors, which will be reported during the runtime (those errors will be
checked by the AQM and displayed in the status line).
Error code Mnemonic Description / Trigger Action
000 NONE No error
004 SLD_LIGHT LEVEL The light level of the SLD exceeds the safety Return to HE

Service procedure to check the OCT data connections. This includes serial communication lines
(Rx / Tx), clock lines (line clock / frame clock) and synchronization lines. The connec tion
scheme between OCT carrier board (OCTCARRI) and OCT controller board is:

Check the connection in the following order:

If the connection is broken, carefully remove the spectrometer unit and the blue laser
platform, exchange the ribbon cable and measure again, if it is still broken, exchange
the OCT adapter board.

2. If the connection inside the PWS box seems to be unbroken, open the camera housing
and measure continuity between connector ST3 on the OCT controller PCB an the lilac
male connector.

ST3

Male ODU
Connector
If there is no connection, remove the female connector that is plugged onto the OCT
controller and check if all lines are properly attached. Attach loose lines! Measure
continuity between the unplugged connector and the lilac male ODU connector.

Move the cable harness during this measurement. If there is no connection in any
position, the cable harness must be replaced (send device to HE).

3. If the measurements above show no breakage, one of the printed circuit boards seems
to be defective. In coordination with HE support, exchange OCT carrier board and/or
IModule-D. If this doesn't help, exchange the OCT controller board (advanced technical
training required).

 Note: The line color in the diagram is NOT the same like the cable itself
