ACTIVITY 5: REFLECTIVE ESSAY (INDIVIDUAL)

1. As a student and Filipino youth, how will you embody the main teachings and
guiding principles of Kartilya? Cite specific lines from the document and how
you would apply it.

- The Kartilya of katipunan has brought a message and an importance of being a

Filipino to live a purpose-driven life including true love of the native land and
genuine compassion for one another. One of the very astonishing line I have read
from the document is the “Maralita, mayaman, mangmang, marunong, lahat dito’y
magkakapantay at tunay na magkakapatid.” Incorporating this line made me realize
the significance of promoting social equality, where everyone has an equal
opportunity, and is treated fairly and should not discriminated against their status and
characteristics. And enabling relationship as a brother/sister supporting each and
every one of us.

“Huag mong sasayangin ang panahun; ang yamang nawala’y mangyayaring

magbalik; nguni’t panahong nagdaan na’y di na muli pang magdadaan.” This line
stated the fact that the way we spend our time is much more valuable than money or
valuable than our wealth because if time was once wasted it will never return again
whereas the money, it can be earned again regardless of how we spent it or wasted it
to something. This line is also essential for us to apply in our daily life and mostly
necessary among students in order to obtain time management.

2. Can Kartilya be considered as timeless and relevant at present?

- Emilio Aguinaldo wrote the Kartilya ng Katipunan which became not only a primer
for members, but an ideology, embodying moral and nationalistic principles. Kartilya
can also be considered as timeless and relevant at present because it taught us how to
be a true Filipino through words and action and how to live a meaningful life
effectively. Despite of carrying several problems or difficult situations we faced and
we currently have, this main teachings and guiding principles of Kartilya provide us a
perceptions to find the true path of reason and enlightenment as a Filipino. Whatever
it takes, it is still important to show humanity to our fellow or ‘kapwa’ Filipinos.
