Lesson Exemplar in Mathematics Grade 10

Topic: Permutation
Time Frame: 1 Hour
Date: March 8, 2023 (Grade 10 – Uranus ABE 16)

I. Objectives
A. Content Standards
The learner demonstrate understanding of key concepts of combinatorics.
B. Performance Standards
The learner is able to use precise counting techniques in formulating
conclusions and in making decisions.
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
1. illustrate the permutations of objects;
2. solve problems involving permutations; and
3. appreciate the importance of the concept of permutation in
Mathematics and other fields of science in our daily lives.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Permutations
Reference/s: Mathematics Learner’s Module in Grade 10
Pages 283 - 291
III. Procedure

A. Activity
Suppose Alyanna was riding on a bus with Norberte and Jushua and there are
only 3 vacant seats in a row. In how many ways can they arrange themselves?

Let’s look at this figure that illustrates the 3 vacant seats.

B. Analysis
*List down all the possible arrangement.
*How many possible arrangement are there?
*What method did you used to determine the different possible arrangement?
*In the given problem, is the order or arrangement important?
*In performing a certain task where order or arrangement is important, what
do you call each possible arrangement?

C. Abstraction

What is Permutation?

Permutation
– refers to the different possible arrangement of a set of objects

The Permutation of n objects taken r at a time

- the number of permutations of n objects taken r at a time is
n!
P
n r
¿
( n−r ) !
, n ≥1 , where

n = the total number of objects

r = number of objects taken at a time

Going back to our activity, how many people do we have? And how many vacant seats?
Applying the Permutation of n objects taken r at a time,
3! 3! 3 x2 x1
nPr = 3P3 ( 3−3 ) ! 0 !
¿ = = =6
1

Additional Example:
2. We have 5 passengers and there were only 3 vacant seats. In how many ways can
we arranged the 5 passengers?

5! 5! 5x 4 x 3 x2!
5 3¿
P = = =5 x 4 x 3=60
(5−3 ) ! 2 ! 2!

Questions:
a. How do you determine if a situation or a problem involves permutation?
b. Site a real-life situation/example related to permutation?
D. Application
(Group activity).Solve the problems.

1. Suppose that in a certain association, there are 10 elected members of the

Board of Directors. In how many ways can a president, a vice president, a
secretary and a treasurer be selected from the board?

2.In how many ways can 5 bicycles be parked if there are 4 available parking
spaces?
IV.Assessment
Solve the following problems, write your answer in a ½ crosswise.
1. A multiple-choice test contains five questions, and each question has four
options. In how many ways can the five questions be answered?

2 A dress shop owner has 8 new dresses that she wants to display in the window.
If the window has 5 mannequins, in how many ways can she dress them up?

V.Assignment
(Notebook)

Think about of a situation that involves arrangements. What you are going to do
is to:
*Write all possible permutations of n object taken r a time.
Note: The value of your n must be greater than 4 and the value of you r must be
greater than 3.

Example:

If you are watching athletic games. Say, 10 runners join a race. In how
many possible ways can they be arranged as first, second, and third placers?
