Accomplishment Report on Retooling of the Mathematics and Science Teachers

on Integrating Comprehension and Reading Activities in Learning Resources

Reading and comprehension skills are related to learning outcomes,


social issues, and economic growth. This is the reason why Department of
Education (DepEd) has been exhausting all avenues to redeem the declining
literacy rate, particularly among learners in mathematics and science, that
includes training mathematics and science teachers in integrating
comprehension and reading activities in their learning. Aligned with this
context, the Retooling of Mathematics and Science Teachers on Integrating
Reading and Comprehension Activities in Learning Resources was held at
Patin-ay National High School, Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur on June
1-3, 2022 for Batch 1 and on June 6-8, 2022 for Batch 2. The first batch of the
participants included all mathematics teachers across all key-stages while the
batch 2 participants included all science teachers across all key-stages of
learning. The activity aimed to be compile mathematics and science worksheets
with embedded reading and comprehension activities for the struggling
readers.

There were twenty-six (27) mathematics teachers, twenty-six (26) science


teachers, three (3) resource persons, three (3) division personnel, and one (1)
secretary who attended the retooling activity. In total, there were twenty-seven
(27) worksheets in mathematics and twenty-six (26) worksheets in science that
were compiled. The worksheets were scrutinized and quality assured by the
Quality Assurance Team of the respective learning area.

Reflective test, oral formative tests, activity sheets, sessions pretests and
posttests, and daily evaluation forms were used as assessment/evaluation
tools/methods all throughout the activity.

The first day of the retooling activity was allotted for the discussion of the
following topics: Interrelatedness of Reading and Comprehension Skills with
Mathematics and Science, Focused Reading and Comprehension Strategies,
Worksheet Guidelines, Specification, and Evaluation, and Validation of
Worksheets in Terms of Learners’ Involvement Index, Communication Index,
and Appropriateness to the Target Key- Stage. The second and third days were
the days for the crafting, presentation, and critiquing of the worksheets.

The retooling activity was adjudged by the participants as Outstanding


as reflected on the table below.
