According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, comedy, originating from ancient Greece in the 4th

century BCE, is a form of drama or art, the purpose of which is to amuse people. Comedy is
usually funny and laughing, while tragedy is sad stories (Hoy, 2022).
For centuries, there have been a lot of efforts to define comedy, starting with Aristotle. From my
point of view, comedy is any type of art, which can be plays, films, or stories that have funny
content or characters. The comic details can exist in the meaning or in the performance or
behaviors of characters in those pieces of art. I have seen many movies of Charlie Chaplin, a
very famous character which funny behaviors and stories. I think those movies are typical for
comedy. The way he performed his characters was perfect and funny, which made people laugh
and relax. Comedy can also be a means for the authors to transfer the criticisms of societies,
using funny ideas or characters to express the unfairness, the destructive phenomenon in every
community.
Comedy can be funny because of the content, the characters, or the ideas behind the content.
Many pieces of art use funny pictures to criticize a social issue, a person, or any problem in the
real world. Some plays or stories are funny just to make people laugh, and to reduce stress
without any social meanings.
I prefer comedy to tragedy as I love to laugh and maintain a joyful life.
