Geocentric vs. Heliocentric Model of the Solar System

FA:Geocentric vs. Heliocentric Models

Purpose (HS-ESS1-4):
● Arguing a claim from evidence
● Reading about how scientific theories are developed over
time

Reminders:
➢ Use the PA you just completed as a tool to help you
complete the graphic organizer.
➢ The reading references are in Modules (week 3) in case you need to see them again.

Part 2: Organizing your argument

Step 1: Write the theory you would have believed if you had been alive in Copernicus’ time in the
Claim box in the graphic organizer below.

Step 2: Put three pieces of evidence, highlighted in the article, that supports your claim in the three
boxes for Evidence. Then in the neighboring Reasoning box for each piece of evidence, explain
how that evidence supports your claim. You may copy and paste the evidence from the articles, but
the reasoning should be your own ideas.

Part 3: Writing a paragraph

Using your graphic organizer as a guide, write a well-organized and thorough paragraph that makes a claim
about which theory you would have believed supported by evidence and refuting contrary evidence
with reasons. Be sure to have a strong closing statement and use quotation marks for any text that is copied
from the reading.

The PARAGRAPH is the part that is graded! You will get 50% credit for completing the organizer, but you must
turn that into a fully developed argument supporting your claim.

Problem/Question
If you were alive at the time of Galileo (1564 - 1642) would you
believe the geocentric or heliocentric model of the universe?

Student response.
If i were alive at the time of galileo (1564-1642) I would prefer the helionetric more. The helionetric
explained explained the motionsof planets more accurate mathematically. This means that the
estimate of the rotations of the planets were based off mathematical calculations. The helionetric
model hanged how educated human beings viewed the world by constructing the heliocentric
theory of Earth's relation to our Sun. The model gave humans a whole new perspective of the
relationship of sun and our planet. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed the heliocentric model in his
work published in 1543, according to NASA Earth Observatory. While the theory of the sun being
central was correct, the model in its entirety held many inaccuracies. Even though the model of the
planets were in accurate the rotations of the planets circling around the sun which was in middle
