PICTURE
THIS!
Dandan Pub is located at the busy street of
Itaewon near the famous place, Jangga. The
owner offered a menu of typical Korean food.
Too bad they use fresh ingredients though it still
tasted bland. They also need to improve the
service because when the waiter was asked
about their special, he didn't know what to
answer. I know it is hard to start a business but I
wish they could

improve it overall because the
owner is nice.
What is an

author?
An author is broadly defined as "the
person who originated or gave existence to
anything" and whose authorship determines
responsibility for what was created.

Narrowly defined, an author is the

originator of any written work and can also

be describes as water.

Determining tone,

mood, technique,

purpose of the

author

TONE Determining the Tone

- the attitude of the

author towards a given
topic. It is expressed
through the words of the
author. As a reader, you
may look at the choice of
words and utilization of
words of the author to
identify the tone.

The house is shabby, but since

we grow up here, it has a special

place in my heart.

mood Determining the Mood

- the emotions that arise

in a reader or the
atmosphere of the text. It
is developed through the
setting, tone, and diction.
- mood is the emotion
that the author wanted
the readers to feel while
reading the text.

The author writes a horror story

utilizing serious and sinister tone.

The tone helps to create a scary

atmosphere and a nervous and

frightened mood for the readers.

TECHNIQUE Determining the Technique

- the author's syntax, word

choice, and tone. There are
four basic literary styles
used in writing:

1. Expository/ Argumentative
2. Descriptive
3. Persuasive
4. Narrative
Expository/
argumentative

- the focus is to tell the readers

about a specific subject or topic but
the author leaves out his own
opinions about the topic.

DESCRIPTIVE

- the focus is to describe an event, a

character, or a place, in detail. The
author usually incorporates
sensory details in text.

persuasive

- the author gives reasons and

justifications to make the readers
believe his point of view.

NARRATIVE

- the author narrates a story like in

novels, short stories, biographies,
and poetries.

PURPOSE Determining the Purpose

- the reason why the author

writes the text. The main
purposes of writing a text
are to inform, to entertain
and to persuade.
