REFLECTION #7

Reflection on Table Setting Practical, 30th November, 2021

Table setting is the term used to refer to the way in which a table is set or laid out with
tableware (that is, glassware, silverware, flatware, and ornaments). The teacher taught us Casual
table setting. Casual table setting is also known as informal table setting and it is used in
luncheons and banquets. This setting is similar to a formal table setting, but is designed for three
courses instead of six. The flatware provided is to be used for soup or salad, main course, and
dessert.
The teacher demonstrated to us how to go about setting a table. We were thought that
plates and cutlery should be placed about one (1) inch from the edge of the table. The knives and
spoons have to be placed to the right of the plate with the soup bowl and spoons turned upwards.
Glasses and cups should be placed at the tips of the knives in a straight or diagonal line, with a
saucer for each. Forks are placed to the left of the plate with the prongs turned upwards.
However, dessert forks and spoons can be placed above the plate. The sharp edges of knives
should be turned inwards. Serving spoons and tongs are to be neatly arranged in the centre of the
table.

The way a table is set up is important as it influences three things: It indicates the feeling
or tone that people have about being together. It lets people know that you think they are
important enough to put in extra effort for them. It influences the appearance of the food served.
