1 General

1.1 Basic Description

1.1.1 Variodyn Converter
The Variodyn VF30BR / VF50BR / VF85BR is member of the Schindler Variodyn frequency converter series.
The Variodyn Converters supplies asynchronous motors with variable frequency and variable three–phase
voltage. They associate the positive properties of the three–phase AC drive (suitability for heavy duty, free-
dom from maintenance) with those of the direct–current drive (high regulation dynamics, low energy con-
sumption), thus having a positive effect on the following properties during elevator operation:
D Full and precise control of velocity and motor torque from zero to full speed
D Landing accuracy
D Ride comfort
D Energy consumption.

The following features are also to be mentioned:

– Low mains feedback
– Low starting current/rated current ratio at mains
– Application of the latest integrated power module technology with IGBTs
(SkiiP = SEMIKRON Intelligent Integrated Power)
– Controlled torque at zero speed to compensate load
– Short–circuit–proof power electronics
– High control quality by a digital field–oriented vector regulation
– Diagnostic possibilities (SMLCD, CADI)
1.1.2 Elevator Control
In it’s basic version the VF30BR, VF50BR and VF85BR will be combined with the TX–GC elevator control
through a serial communication link. These combination is intended for NEW INSTALLATIONS.
With a modular interface set the converters can be used for virtually every kind of elevator control, which is
of particular importance for MODERNIZATION. Commissioning is simplified by means of self learning func-

Fig. 1 System Overview

1. Motor contactors are outside the Variodyn Converter, if the trip control module PTCM is used
2. Optional: operation without motortacho possible in a restricted operating range
3. According to DYNATRON–S type interface standard
Two main building blocks of the VVVF converter are the Drive Command Module (basically the drive regula-
tion) and the Power Module (basically the energy conversion module). This design is used for the entire
range of Variodyn converters thereby being a unified solution for low, mid and high rise drives.

Interfaces are provided for different elevator controls:

Serial interface: The Drive Command Module has a serial interface for direct connec–tion to TX–GC
Schindler elevator control.
24V–interface (PTCM): With a build in trip control module a parallel interface (24V DC) is provided
with the well established Dynatron S type interface standard (1). The converter can be used with every
elevator control supporting this interface. No additional shaft information is required.
Wide range interface (PITCM and relay block): This universal interface module (24V...230V AC/DC)
to third parties.

adapts the 24V–interface to virtually every elevator control (1). An additional shaft information is usu-
ally required.

3 Scope of Application
Each installation must be calculated by using the official calculation computer program (5) or official convert-
er/drive duty tables with the specific installation data. Use of the drive calculation program is the most flexible
and most precise way to consider specific installation data and to avoid ”type jumps” (gears, hoisting motors,
frequency converters).

6 Product Description

6.1 Function Overview

6.1.1 Frequency Converter
Variodyn VF30BR / VF50BR / VF85BR frequency converters supplies variable frequency and variable volt-
age to an asynchronous motor.
New Installations (TX–GC)
The drive controller (PIOVECL3 & PVEC) receives the speed reference value via an RS 485 interface from
the ELEVATOR CONTROL and the actual value from an incremental encoder. This is an IG2000 for geared
motors.
The signal representing the difference between the reference value and actual value is processed in the
speed regulator.

Modernization with PTCM / PITCM

The drive controller (PIOVECL3 & PVEC) receives the speed reference value via the PTCM / PITCM from
the ELEVATOR CONTROL and the actual value from an incremental encoder if the speed value is >1 m/s.
Furthermore, for current regulation, the motor currents of three phases are measured. From these input
quantities, the current reference values are calculated in the speed regulator by means of fieldoriented vector
regulation and are transmitted to a PWM regulator. This then generates the corresponding control signals
for the power transistors, so that the motor currents follow predetermined current reference values as closely
as possible. The signals are fed to the driver stage incorporated in the SKiiP1) module, which control the
IGBTs.

6.1.2 Recuperation into the Mains

There is no recuperation of energy into the supply mains. Brake energy is converted into heat by means of
a resistor.

6.1.3 Load Measurement

Medium travel comfort:
For a medium travel comfort no load measurement is needed.

Very good travel comfort:

The load measurement is used for various purposes in the lift controller. In order to provide a very good travel
comfort, the drive system also needs a load measurement.

1) This is an Intelligent Integrated Power Module

6.2 Variodyn VF30BR / VF50BR / VF85BR Functional Blocks (see Fig. Fig. 2, Fig. 3)
The frequency converter VF30BR / VF50BR / VF85BR converts a three–phase supply with constant voltage
and frequency into a three–phase supply with variable voltage and frequency.
6.2.1 Input Circuit
The input circuit consists of the following elements: mains filter (FEN), charging resistor (WGR), charging
contactor (SGRW) and main’s contactor (SH). These switch the three–phase supply to the converter and
damp the high–frequency interference generated in the appliance.
The VF30BR uses instead of of the WGR and the SGRW a precharging function from Mini SkiiP8.
6.2.2 Rectifier
The uncontrolled rectifier (consisting of diodes) has the task of rectifying the three–phase main’s voltage and
using this to supply an intermediate direct–voltage circuit.
6.2.3 DC–Link
The intermediate direct–voltage circuit (DC–Link) smoothes the direct voltage (CKZ) and damps the mains–
current harmonics (LKZ).
Y–capacitors (CDCL) are between plus and minus to improve the EMC behavior.
6.2.4 Braking Chopper
The braking chopper limits the intermediate–circuit voltage when the elevator motor is operating as a genera-
tor and at the same time converts the energy occurring into heat by means of a forced–ventilated brake resis-
tor (WBR).
No energy is returned into the mains.
The IGBT and the correspondent free–wheeling diode for the braking chopper with the respective driver and
DC–link voltage regulator is integrated in the SKiiP module.
The braking–chopper device records the intermediate–circuit voltage and regulates it by controlling a transis-
tor according to the 2–point control method.
6.2.5 Inverter
The inverter breaks down the smoothed direct voltage into a three–phase system with variable voltage and
frequency by suitable switching of the IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor). The IGBTs are designed
as a three–phase bridge (SkiiP mdule). The control signals, which are generated by the drive controller (PIO-
VECL3 & PVEC) are galvanically separated and amplified by the driver stages (within the SKiiP module). The
inverter protective functions (overcurrent, overvoltage, excess temperature, short–circuits) are monitored
and processed directly or indirectly by the PIOVECL3 & PVEC.
6.2.6 Output Circuit
Du/dt filter (FEMH) to limit voltage slewrate of the inverter output (Optional). Recommended for moderniza-
tion with old motors and for an excellent EMI behavior.
6.2.7 Regulation
The drive controller (PIOVECL3 & PVEC) receives the speed reference value from the drive interface subsys-
tem via an RS 485 interface. It receives the actual speed value from an incremental encoder, which is an
IG2000 for geared. The difference signal of the reference value and the actual value is processed in the speed
regulator.
The flux reference value is formed from the motor parameters and the intermediate–circuit voltage. The differ-
ence signal of the flux reference value and calculated actual flux value is processed in the flux regulator.
A current reference value is calculated by means of the output of the flux regulator and the speed regulator
and is transmitted to a current regulator witch generates a voltage reference. The pulse with modulation finally
generates the corresponding control signals for the six power transistors (IGBTs) so that the motor voltage
exactly follows the predetermined reference value.

6.2.8 Control and Monitoring

The drive controller (PIOVECL3 & PVEC) controls the input contactors (SH, SGRW) and the fan. Moreover,
event and fault handling (earth short cut, inverter inhibit, etc.) are carried out and status messages indicated.
PSPS is the power supply for the printed circuit boards.
6.2.9 Auxiliary Devices
The auxiliary devices combine the voltage supplies for printed circuit boards, contactors and the fan.
6.2.10 Matching Transformer
For building voltages other than 460/480 VAC (N.A.) and (220)/(230)/380/400/415 VAC (EUR/AP) an external
Auto Transformer shall be used to step up or down the voltage to 480 VAC or 400/415 VAC. The building 3
phase voltage requirements are as follows:

Building Frequency
Voltage
208 VAC 60 Hz
220 VAC 50/60 Hz Without Auto Transformer for VF30BR Umot=180 V
230 VAC 50/60 Hz Without Auto Transformer for VF30BR Umot=180 V

Explanations:
1) The requirements must be fulfilled with EMC–filter and dc–link choke.
2) SUD = Ǩ3 x 340/414 V x IC2D
3) SUN = Ǩ3 x UC2N x IC2M
4) Trips according to the following short load cycle
5) Effective value
6) UN v 220 / 360 V with power derating (automatically reduction of acceleration and nominal speed if
necesary)
7) UN v 434 V with power derating (automatically reduction of acceleration and nominal speed if necessary)
8) Fundamental harmonic
9) Voltage difference between 2 phases <3%
10) With VM motors.
11) Total harmonic distortion THD v 5% for mains voltage is typically fulfilled but also depends on the quality
of the system voltage supplied by the utility.
12) With motor speed encoder
13) Power derating with motors less than 340/414VAC motor nominal voltage (U2N)

The load cycle must be fulfilled in the following applications:

Converter type Trip type ZKH ED Operation mode
VF30BR Short trip 180 t/h 40% Motor and generation operation
VF30BR Long trip 60 t/h 50% Motor and generation operation
VF50/85BR Short trip 180 t/h 60% Motor and generation operation
VF50/85BR Long trip 65 t/h 60% Motor and generation operation

1) IC2Z occurs only for two load cycles a day. Otherwise IC2Z = IC2M

Triangle trips (i. e. 3s accel., 3s brake, 6s pause) are possible, but not more than three
in a row.
