ABSTRACT

The research study entitled “Impacts of Housekeeping subject in

improving the Hygienic habits of the Selected Grade 11 Home Economic
students of Philippine Christian University A.Y. 2020- 2021”, studies the
Independent variable which is the Housekeeping subject and Dependent
Variable which is the Hygienic habits. The research study deals on identifying
the impacts between the two variables. Housekeeping subject is a specialized
subject of the Home Economic strand. It ensures the cleanliness, neatness
and sanitation of the environment. While Hygienic habits is good personal
cleanliness, care and also good overall health.

Furthermore, it specifies the aims of the researchers which is to

determine if there is a significant impacts of the housekeeping subject in the
improvements of the Hygienic habits and Personal hygiene of the students.
This research study is a Quantitative research. The researchers used data
collection through the process of survey questionnaire which will centralized
on the response of the respondents. In addition, the survey questionnaires
contains two categories which are the Impacts of housekeeping subject in
hygienic habits of the students and assessment of the students in daily lives.
They also used Slovin’s formula which is the n = N/(1+Ne2), to compute the
sample size.

Further, the responses are interpreted using the Statistical treatment

specifically the Weighted Mean Computation and Chi- square. Thus, the
results obtained in the research study shows that there are significant impacts
of Housekeeping subject in improving the Hygienic habits of the students.
Moreover, the researchers concluded that the Housekeeping subject has an
effect and impact to improve the Personal hygiene and habits of the students.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents Background of the study, Statement of the

Problem and Purpose, Scope and Delimitation and Significance of the study.

Rationale

We have chosen to focus on the Housekeeping subject and its impact to the
hygienic habits of the Home Economic students. Moreover, we chose this
topic because it caught our interest to study about those impacts that will
surely help Home Economics students developing their Hygienic Habits which
is necessary on their future job career. Furthermore, the research wants to
determine what are those Good Impacts of Housekeeping subjects and be
able to determine effective ways for students to improve their sterility and
cleanliness. The relevance of our study to our strand is that Home Economics
Specialization and future careers should look presentable and clean as they
would be dealing with several people, food and beverage, housekeeping etc.
Conducting the study will be beneficial mainly for HE students.

A. Background of the Study

Home Economics students and strand focuses on the development of

the skills that will be useful in the Tourism and Hospitality Industries. One of
the applied and specialized subject of the Home Economics strand is the
Housekeeping subject. Furthermore, Housekeeping is a process of
performing duties and chores such as household chores, maintaining
cleanliness, sanitation, cooking and along with others. Hygiene is a practice
that deals with health protection as well as practices of personal and clinical
treatment. Therefore, daily hygienic practices can be considered by a
community as good habits of a person especially for the Home economic
students.

However, the researchers noticed that the Hygienic habits of the Home
economic students are enhanced and improving with the assistance of
Housekeeping subject. Proper Hygiene is necessary especially for the Home
Economic students. Considering, that the Home Economic students has the
most probability of having a job in the future whereas they have to face people
and look presentable. Home Economic students should look presentable at all
times as to what the housekeeping subject taught them to be. As well as what
they should do to look more neat in the eyes of the others. That’s why the
researchers come up with the topic, “Impacts of Housekeeping subject in
improving the Hygienic habits of the selected Grade 11 Home Economic
students of Philippine Christian University AY 2020-2021” that seeks to
answer the following questions:

1. What are the impacts of the Housekeeping subject in improving the

Hygienic Habits of the selected Grade 11 Home Economic students of
Philippine Christian University AY 2020-2021?

2. How does housekeeping subject helps to improve the Hygienic habits

of the selected Grade 11 Home Economics student of Philippine Christian
University AY 2020-2021?

3. Why do Home economic students need to improve their hygienic habits?

This study focuses on the improvements of the Hygienic habits of

Home Economic students. Studying housekeeping will not only help to gain
knowledge. Besides it helps to improve our skills especially in maintaining the
cleanliness of the surroundings as well as our Personal cleanliness/ Hygiene.
Thereafter, the main purpose of this study is to determine the significant
impacts of the housekeeping subject to the hygienic habits of the Home
Economic students.

B.Statement of the Problem and Purpose

This research study entitled “Impacts of Housekeeping subject in

improving the Hygienic habits of the selected Grade 11 Home Economic
students of Philippine Christian University AY 2020-2021” aims to answer the
following research questions in order to attain the fundamental research
purposes of the study. With the research purpose it form a possible outcome
of the study.

Major Question:

1. What are the impacts of the Housekeeping subject in improving the

Hygienic Habits of the Home Economic students of Philippine Christian
University?

Minor Questions:

2. How does housekeeping subject helps to improve the Hygienic habits of

the Home Economics student of Philippine Christian University?

3. Why do Home economic students need to improve their hygienic habits?

The researchers aim to determine the significant impacts of the

Housekeeping subject to the Hygienic habits of the Home Economic students
of Philippine Christian University.

C. Significance of the Study

The findings that will be reveal in this research study entitled “Impacts
of Housekeeping subject in improving the Hygienic habits of the selected
Grade 11 Home Economic students of Philippine Christian University A.Y.
2020-2021” is found beneficial to the Home Economic students, Teachers
and Future researchers. Furthermore, it is beneficial to the Home Economic
students because they will know the importance and the impacts of the
Housekeeping subject that they are taking. They will be able to know why do
they need to take the Housekeeping subject seriously as it will help them to
have a Proper hygiene. That is one of the requirements for their future jobs in
the Tourism and Hospitality Industry. It may also be beneficial to the Teachers,
especially to those who are still a newbie to the subject. They can use it as a
guide. Moreover, the future researchers will also gain benefits to this study.
The study will give adequate information to those who will undergo similar
study in the future. They can use the findings of this study as their good
source of accurate and useful informations and data to them.

D.Scopes and Delimitations of the Study

The general intent of this descriptive research is to know the impacts of
the housekeeping subject to the selected Grade 11 Home Economic students
when it comes to their Hygienic habits at Philippine Christian University from
February 2021- June 2021. Furthermore, this study will mainly identify and
evaluate different impacts that helps the improvement of the Hygienic habits
of the students. This research study will not going to identify the Hygienic
practices, but it will focus on the impacts of the housekeeping subject to the
improvement of the hygienic habits of the students. Hence, the researchers
utilized the right amount for them to get the right number of population from
Selected Grade 11 Home Economic students. The aim to the study is to
determine the significant impacts of the Housekeeping subject to the Hygienic
habits of the Home Economic students of Philippine Christian University.

CHAPTER 2

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this descriptive research that focuses on the improvements of the

Hygienic habits of the students. Significant articles are provided in order to
describe the condition of the research study. It is an analysis and synthesis of
the source materials. Furthermore, these provided articles and readings gives
focus on the Housekeeping subjects and its impacts on the improvement of
the Hygienic habits or the Proper hygiene of students. This chapter includes
the studies and articles that helped the researchers support their study. Those
that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing informations that are
relevant and similar to the present study.

Housekeeping

According to Raghubalan (2015,17) “providing cleanliness, secure,

safe, comfy and cozy environment” is a feasible definition of Housekeeping.

Housekeeping is an operational and important department of the hotel

that handles and manage the tidiness, cleanliness and maintenance of the
surroundings. In addition, housekeeping is the one that ensures and
responsible in practicing as well as maintaining the cleanliness. It has a
process of performing duties and chores. Specifically the household chores,
sanitation, cleanliness and many more to mention. Furthermore, there are two
types of housekeeping, they are the Industrial housekeeping and Domestic
Housekeeping. Industrial housekeeping is focus and based on the
commercial establishments duties, while the Domestic Housekeeping is focus
and based on the house duties.

The researchers perceived that the Housekeeping has a lot of tasks,

especially when it comes to maintenance and cleanliness. Though its not just

about the cleanliness. It involves the neatness and right order of the things in
work, and maintaining the surroundings free to avoid hazards. It maintain the
cleanliness of the indoor and public areas in hotels. Moreover, the sanitized
and well maintained environment stimulates a safety, comfort and healthy
environment.

Hygiene

According to the article from “Personal Hygiene”(2014), Personal

hygiene refers to the action taken by a person to maintain his or her physical
health and well- being by cleanliness, which is necessary at all stages of life.
Cleanliness is instilled in children from an early age.

Hygienic habits is personal, as its name implies. Personal hygiene is

how you take care of your body. Youth do not really understand the
importance of the personal hygiene and how to maintain it. Maintaining
hygiene practices reduces the spread of illness and risk of medical conditions
caused by not taking care of yourself. Keeping yourself self clean protects you
from a variety of diseases. Everyone must maintain basic cleanliness, which
must be learned by practices. Washing hands, Brushing teeth and taking a
bath is a simple kind of Personal hygiene. Thus, there are several kinds of
Hygiene. Most important is the cleanliness of the body. Along with proper
maintenance of personal look and appearance. It increases the self
confidence and positively impacts to personal features.

In the researchers perceptions, Personal hygiene practices are not

difficult. It is important to set an example for Hygienic practices.Once you
have a Personal Hygiene routine in place, it becomes a habit in no time. In
this regard, Personal hygiene is defined as a condition on promoting sanitary
practices to self.

Housekeeping and Personal Hygiene

According to Raghubalan (2015, 762-772) the main goal of

housekeeping few years back is only cleaning. But since hotel housekeeping
is continuously changing. Taking care of Personal hygiene is also essential.

In housekeeping, it is not only about the cleanliness and sanitation of

the place or surroundings. But it also includes the Personal hygiene of a
person or the staff. You may notice it in the Physical appearance of the
person. Being tidy and having a presentable look in clothes and foot ware.
Furthermore, Hygiene is now a part of the Housekeeping and Hospitality
Industry. Besides, It is important for the housekeeping staff and
housekeeping/ home economic students to be conscious and train for the
health standards. The reason is that it may be beneficial for their own health
and also for those people who will use and utilize the place that they have
cleaned. Practically, cleanliness is thus related to hygiene.

As analyzed by the researchers, Personal hygiene now is an important

role in the Housekeeping. Cleanliness of the place is not the only focus in
housekeeping. It gives focus on the personal hygiene. With that, the staffs
and the students will do their task easily. The reason is that they know how to
do it to themselves so they can also do it in their environment. And everyone
will be safe from any harm and any diseases that is caused by the improper
and dirty habits and environment.

B. Synthesis

In order to assure the improvements of the hygienic habits of the

students in studying the Housekeeping subject, there must be a practices and
trainings that can help the students to improve their personal hygiene. With
that, the 3 articles that are mentioned stated that they all focus on the
maintenance and cleanliness. The articles that we used helped to acquired
and guides us more in this descriptive research.

Moreover, the Hygienic habits and practices is depending on the care

of the person to their own selves where they feel the difficulty. Thus, this
research can help to determine the impacts of housekeeping for the
improvement of the Personal hygiene practice of the students.

The researchers established a theory regarding the “Housekeeping

and its impacts to the Personal and Hygienic habits”. Further, the researchers
have evaluate that the Personal hygiene particularly hygienic habits can be
improved by the Housekeeping. With that, if the students gives importance to
housekeeping, they will gain knowledge and their hygienic habits will improve.

Those concepts helps the researchers to create the major question that
is to know what are the impacts of the housekeeping subject in improving the
Hygienic habits of the selected Grade 11 Home Economic students.

D. Hypothesis of the Study

There are no significant impacts of housekeeping subject in improving

the hygienic habits.

E. Definition of Terms

Housekeeping subject - the research study focuses on impacts of

Housekeeping subject, the independent variable. It is one of the major
subject of Grade 11 students who were taking the Home Economic strand.
This subject study and practice not only academically but also the skills and
performances. Especially ensures the cleanliness of the environment or a
room and cleanliness of the body/ physical appearance. But not only the
cleanliness, housekeeping includes cooking, neatness, maintaining safe place
and it avoids any hazards. Furthermore, the practices and learnings in
Housekeeping subject is used in own house and in Tourism and Hospitality
Industry. More specifically in Hotels, the reason is that it is considered as an
operational department in a hotel as well as it plays an important role in
Hospitality Industry.

Hygienic Habits - the research study also focuses on the dependent

variable which is the hygienic habits. It is a practice and a best way to
maintain good personal hygiene and good overall health. The reason is that
practicing and knowing the hygienic habits helps an individual to stay clean,
reduce risk for diseases and it helps to improve the confidence and self-
esteem of an individual. Particularly, Hygienic habits specify the maintenance
of the cleanliness and tidyness of individual’s body. There are a lot of types of
Hygiene, such as Shower hygiene, Teeth hygiene, Hands hygiene, Toilet
hygiene and etc. Some examples of Personal Hygiene practices are: 1.)
Taking a bath regularly, 2.) Wash hands frequently, 3.) Brushing teeth, 4.)
Wear clean clothes and many more to mention. Caring for your own self will
be good for your physical health as well as for your mental health.

Home Economic Students - are the students who are taking the
Home Economic strand. Home Economic students does not just develop and

improve knowledge. They also improve their skills, attitudes and Physical
appearance and so on. These students are interested to be a part of the
Tourism and Hospitality Industry. Home Economic students doesn’t just learn
about cleaning or cooking but they also build and learn responsibilities. They
were used in this study to be a respondents and a variable because they are
the one who will use and benefit from learnings of the Home economic strand.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, methods and procedure that was used in the research
study are presented. It explain the research design, sample and sampling
procedures, the area where the study was conducted, the instrument that was
used, the data gathering procedure and analysis of data.

A. RESEARCH DESIGN

This research study is a Quantitative research in which it deals with

statistical, numerical, mathematical and computational treatments to obtain
needed information and results. Furthermore, this research study is
considered as a descriptive type of quantitative research. Since, it focused on
the impacts of the housekeeping subject in improving the hygienic habits of
the students. Moreover, it will be done through the use of survey
questionnaire. However, the responses of the students that they will gather
will not be the final step. The researchers will analyze those responses using
the statistical process in order to specify and come up a substantial
information and results.

B. RESEARCH LOCALE

The research study entitled “The Impacts of Housekeeping

subject in improving the Hygienic habits of the Selected Grade 11 Home
Economic students of Philippine Christian University A. Y. 2020- 2021” will be
conducted within the academic year 2020- 2021. The researchers will going to
conduct their study in Philippine Christian University - Dasmariñas Campus.
The area is located at Sampaloc I, Dasmariñas city, Cavite. The researchers
decided to conduct their study at that locale since the researchers and the
respondents are currently enrolled as Senior High School student for
Academic year 2020- 2021 .

C. SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES USED

The researchers used the Slovin’s formula which is the n = N/(1+Ne2),

to compute the sample size and it assert that 15 students will participate in
data gathering. This study is a Quantitative type of research. Therefore, the
researchers come up with a survey to gather the responses of the
respondents. Furthermore, the researchers agreed to use the Stratified
Purposive Sampling in selecting respondents to ensure that they can gather
significant and relevant information. And the respondents of this study are the
students who are currently enrolled as Grade 11 TVL Home Economic
students at Philippine Christian University - Dasmariñas. In order to gather the
needed data, the researchers will be selecting 5 respondents in each section.
And in that 5 respondents, 3 there are females and 2 are males. Moreover,
the researchers assured that the selection of respondents are based on the
relevance to the study and a Home Economic students so they could answer
the stated questionnaire correctly.

D. INSTRUMENTATION

The researchers will use survey questionnaire form to acquire data that
is necessary in the study. All respondents will answer the survey
questionnaire that contains 10 - 15 item questions. Those questionnaires are
focusing on the thoughts of the students about the impacts of housekeeping
subject in hygienic habits of students. Furthermore, the questionnaire will be
divided into three parts. The first part contains the letter of consent. The letter
of consent is the part where all the information given by the respondents will
be treated with confidentiality. Then, the second part is the demographic
profile, it includes the name, age, section and gender of the respondents.
Lastly, is the rating scale of 1- 5. Wherein 5 is the highest and 1 is the lowest.
There are two category, (1) Impacts of the Housekeeping subject in improving
the hygienic habits of the students, (2) Assessment of the students in daily
lives.

E. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

To be more parallel to the research design, the researchers will

conduct a survey questionnaires to 15 Senior High School (Home Economic
strand) Grade 11 students of Philippine Christian University - Dasmariñas
Campus. The methods that the researchers choose will be helpful to collect
more necessary data and reliable information from the respondent’s
perspectives. Moreover, aside from the accumulated data in survey among
the respondents, the researchers will consider further and various information
from online sources and published materials such as books and journals. With
that, they can acquire more significant data that can strengthen their
assumptions.

F. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF DATA

The researchers used various statistical treatment specifically the

Weighted mean and Chi- square. These said techniques are used in order to
acquire the necessary results and generate a measurable analysis of data for
the quantitative study.

In this research study they used rating scale as a measuring aspect of their
survey questionnaire. With that, they are going to use weighted mean, in
order to figure out the average of each responses in every items.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

POSSIBLE RESULTS:

The research study focuses on the Dependent variable which is the

Hygienic habits and Independent variable, Housekeeping subject.
Furthermore, the possible research result of our research study based on the
categories of the research questionnaire which has the scale of 1 - 5 definitely
are about the impacts of the housekeeping subject in hygienic habits of the
students and assessment of the students in daily lives. For instance like, if the
students acquire to study the housekeeping subject it can encourage them to
improve personal hygiene. With that, the students could possibly smile
confidently all day and look neat and very professional. Especially, they are
going to have their future jobs in Tourism and Hospitality Industry. Moreover,
the possible research result based on theories from the RRL, the
Housekeeping subject can be connected with the Hygienic habits for the
reason that they are both about cleanliness and sanitation. The researchers
assumed that there are positive impacts in this research study. With that,
there will also a positive outcomes. Also, the possible results that our
research study could conclude based on statistical treatment that uses the
Weighted Mean and Chi- square, it could measure and summarize the
essential data in order to use it in the right form. That’s also the reason why
the survey questionnaire are performed and implemented. The results are
depending on the responses of the respondents. And with that, the
appropriate conclusion can be determine. Finally, those are the possible
research result of our research study based on statistical treatment, theories
and categories of research questionnaire.

POSSIBLE ANSWERS FOR THE STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

The possible research answers for the question that is indicated in the
Statement of the problem which is the “What are the impacts of
Housekeeping subject in improving the Hygienic habits of the Home
Economic students of Philippine Christian University?” are the following:

1. Housekeeping subject has a possible positive effect on the hygienic

habits of the students.
2. Home Economic students will enhance their personal hygiene, take
care of their own body and be more conscious to their physical
appearance.
3. Housekeeping subject and its efficiency can be seen on how the
student will present themselves confidently and professionally in front
of other people.
4. The learnings that the students will acquire in this study can be used
everywhere and in daily lives.
5. Significant responses on Housekeeping subject are possible
because the students or the respondents already tackle it and familiar
with it.
6. The housekeeping subject will not only help them to be
knowledgeable but it will help them to be more trained, professional
and skilful.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

A. CONCLUSION

The aim of this study is to determine the significant impacts of

housekeeping subject in improving the hygienic habits of the students. The
Home Economic student are involved in this study since they are the
respondent. It is conducted at Philippine christian University. Statistical
treatment were the methods used in this study. And the data was gather
through the process of survey questionnaire with 2 categories that has 15
questions in all.

From the research results, it was found that there are significant
impacts of housekeeping subject in improving the hygienic habits of the
students. With that, they gain knowledge, improve skills, boost self confidence,
improve personal hygiene and show neat, clean and professional look. In
conclusion, housekeeping subject has an effect and impact in improving the
personal hygiene and habits of the students.

This study, however, may contains some mistakes in the process of

research. For this reason, any suggestion related to this study that is intended
to its improvements is truly welcomed. Finally, the findings of this research
study, hopefully can provide insights and information for more similar studies
in the future.

B. POSSIBLE RESEARCH RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE

RESEARCH STUDIES:

The possible research areas that the researchers will recommend for
future research studies are the following:

1. Identify and explain the methods, practices, task and procedures

that are under the Housekeeping subject.
2. Introduce and Enumerate the Hygienic practices, that everyone
should know, practice, and maintain for their Personal Hygiene.
3. Analyze Poor Hygienic practice and include what could be the result
of it such as acquiring a disease.
4. Prepare more task and trainings that could help to develop the skills,
ability, and competencies of the students.

This study may also be used as a basis for the improvement of training
that HE students have. They may be provided with training and seminars that
could help them develop the skills that they have when it comes to Hygienic
habits.
