CHEM1001 – SGTA2 (Wk 3)

Stoichiometry
1. What is stoichiometry?

2. When the equation for a chemical reaction is “balanced”, it means that equal
numbers of atoms for each element involved in the reaction are represented on the
reactant and product sides (https://openstax.org/details/books/chemistry section
4.1). Which law is satisfied when the equation for a chemical equation is balanced?

3. A scientist reacts decane (C10H22) with oxygen and produces carbon dioxide
and water. From 284 g decane and 992 g oxygen, she produces 880 g carbon dioxide
and 396 g water. Use this information to complete the table below

4. Consider the equation for the generic chemical reaction: 2 A + 4 B ® 3 C

What is the limiting reactant when 0.14 mol A is allowed to react with 0.26 mol B?

5. Write a balanced equation for the reaction between molecular nitrogen (N2)
and oxygen (O2) to form dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5). Remember, we aren’t asking
you to tell us anything about nitrogen, oxygen or dinitrogen pentoxide, so don’t be
intimidated by the chemical names. We are simply asking you to find the ratio
between reactants and product that produces equal numbers of atoms on the
reactant side and the product side.

Molarity

6. A 355 mL soft drink sample contains 0.133 mol of sucrose (table sugar). What
is the molarity (ie molar concentration) of sucrose in the beverage?
7. How much sugar (moles) is contained in a modest sip (10 mL) of the soft drink
from the previous question?

8. How many grams of sucrose are there in the modest sip (10 mL) of soft drink
from the previous question? To convert moles to mass, you will need the chemical
formula of sucrose (C12H22O11) to calculate molar mass. (Molar mass: C = 12 g mol-1,
H = 1 g mol-1, O = 16 g mol-1)

9. How much water should you add to a 3.5 mL sample of 5.5 M NaOH solution
to dilute it to 1.2 M?

10. Bonding and non-bonding electrons can be represented as being held in

orbitals. For organic compounds, these orbitals are sp3, sp2 and sp orbitals. What
are the geometries of these orbitals?
Extra Practice Questions:
1. What is the final concentration of a solution prepared by diluting 55.0 mL of 7.75 M
HCl to a final volume of 0.905 L?
a. none of the options b. 0.471 M c. 7.75 M d. 2.123 M

2. Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons. However, nitrogen nearly always exists in a

molecular form. With how many valence electrons would it prefer to be surrounded?
Express your answer numerically.
3. Carbon monoxide is considered which of the following?
a. molecular compound b. ionic compound
c. none of the options d. molecular element

4. The angle between any three atoms in BH3 is approximately ___ degrees.
