Guidelines and style guide for Alomedika

Audience
Articles are written for healthcare professionals in Indonesia, with the main target audience
being young GP doctors. Remember to keep the article relevant with Indonesian people and
condition.
Keep in mind this is a web based platform and we assume doctors and other health professional
are likely to use this as a reference tool. They are therefore unlikely to read the article from start
to finish, but may just concentrate on the section they are interested in. They may be reading
from their smartphone, tablet or laptop so formating needs to be clear and liberal use of sub
pages and subheadings will help our users target the section they are looking for.

General Format
1. Title - Arial Font size 23, bold
2. Section title are in Arial size 12 font and bold, put space before section title
3. Headings are in Arial size 12 font and bold, Sentence Case, put space before
subheadings but no space between subheading and the following text
a. Subheadings are in Arial size 12 font and underlined, Sentence Case, put space
before subheadings but no space between subheading and the following text
b. Subsubheadings are in Arial size 12 font, Sentence Case, with colon sign (:)
i. e.g. CT Scan:
4. Single spacing, normal word margin (1-1-1-1), justify alignment
5. No space between paragraph
6. English words/phrase following Indonesian word/phrase - should be in () brackets and in
italics eg. emboli paru (pulmonary embolism / PE) unless it’s in heading
7. Words in another language (most commonly English words) that are in the text of the
article should be in italics unless it’s in heading.
8. Species names (such as the name of insects, bacteria etc.) should be in italics eg.
Aedes aegypti
9. Table/diagram is center align, title below Arial size 10, table heading Arial size 10 center
align, table/diagram text Arial size 10 left align. Because of copyright issue, you must
make your own table/diagram (See Style tips)
10. Abbreviation must be written in full name in every section
11. Every section must have at least 1 reference
12. Articles will be assigned as long and short articles. Topic needs to be covered
comprehensively, do not add unnecessary text to meet a word count. If article is overly
long ensure that material that is not directly related to the topic is not included
(remember you can hyperlink to other articles if the reader would want more detail
about a disease, drug or procedure).

○ Persiapan Pasien
○ Peralatan

CME articles
● In app, CME title only shown the first 52 characters (including spaces). So, make title
less than 52 characters if possible or ensure that people can understand the title using
only the first 52 characters

● Address a specific clinical question
● Straight to the point e.g. if you write about oral salbutamol for asthma, don’t explain too
much about asthma and the therapy (because we’ll link it to the asthma disease article).
Get straight to the point of oral salbutamol efficacy/pros-cons/controversy for asthma
patient.
● Discuss pros and cons, or differing viewpoints that might exist in medicine e.g.
Oral salbutamol->cons: ineffective, should be stop; pros:cheap, more available than the
inhaler.. Discuss about these pros and cons and whether we should stop oral salbutamol
usage or not
● Minimum 5 references - aiming to use the most up to date resources to provide the best
evidenced based medicine on this subject
● Use bullet points where required to allow for easy reading of the article for doctors
wanting to get a quick answer
● Once published some of these articles will be able to be commented on by website
members
● Balanced: ex appendicogram: not recommended because of low accuracy and high risk
but in developing countries like Indonesia, USG aren’t available everywhere and very
operator-dependent so appendicogram still have its place for appendicitis diagnosis
● Various countries: not America-centric->UK/Australia/Europe

Acceptable Sources
Here are the list of acceptable sources for writing Alomedika article:
● Priority 1: Recent primary sources (journal articles): the latest 5 years. Need to appraise
the information to make sure that it’s valid. Beware of predatory journal article (See
section Interpretation of Journal Articles (Primary Sources) and Use of Statistics in
Articles)
● Priority 2: secondary sources such as Medscape
● Priority 3: older journal article: >5 years old
● Only if there are no other sources: Textbook (please try not to use textbook and if
needed, only use one that you can find online, max 1 year before)
● Nonmedical source: Nonmedical source can only be use for patient education. Prioritize
sources from medical organization or government such as AHA or AAFP, Kemenkes,
IDAI, and if not available you can use source from hospital

Referencing Guide
Please see referencing guide for Numbered referencing system below
http://www.deakin.edu.au/students/studying/study-support/referencing/numbered-citation

Our style exceptions to guide above are:

● In text citations are presented as [1] or [2,3] or [4-6] - format Arial, font size 12, not
superscript
● Don’t put in text citations in heading or subheading

● Include article name in the reference. Author name and year published must also
be added if available
● In the Reference List:
○ Full stop following each number
○ Format bibliography: Arial, font size 12
○ Start with bibliography number 1
○ Line spacing single
○ Space after none
● Don’t put Accessed/Cited: date on the reference for Internet source, e.g.
Accessed: 27 November, 2017/Diakses tanggal 27 November 2017/Cited 2018 Aug
31
● In the references section please provide a hyperlink to the journal article so if interested
the doctor reading our page can read the article

Interpretation of Journal Articles (Primary Sources) and Use of Statistics in Articles

● Choosing journal articles, pubmed is the most comprehensive website for finding
medical journal articles. Alternately most journals have their own websites so can be
sourced directly. Eg. https://www.bmj.com/research, http://www.nejm.org/
● Open access journals - the free open access medical education (FOAM) movement has
made online information more easily available for medical professionals, but on the
negative side there are also less reputable online “journals” that do not follow
conventional peer reviewed medical editorial standards and will essentially publish any
article for payment. Please be aware of these sites, if the journal name is not well
known then “Beall’s list” https://beallslist.weebly.com/ list journals that are suspected to
be predatory journals. There is also the DOAJ https://doaj.org/ that review online
journals.
● Most of the information in your articles will originate in journal articles, therefore it is
important to be able to interpret these articles. A shortcut to this can be some sites that
analyse articles, such as: the NNT.com, These sites can also be useful in improving your
understanding of how to analyse journal articles.
● Understand the intention and the outcome of the study. What question is the study
designed to answer, does the data answer this question?
● Look at the study method:
○ Is it the best level evidence? -eg.for treatments RCT are the gold standard.
○ Is the sample size appropriate - should be easy to recruit lots of patients for
common disease, so be skeptical of studies with small numbers in common
diseases. Eg. trial of a new diabetes therapy should be able to recruit hundreds
if not thousands of patients. In rare disease then small studies or case studies
are acceptable

○ Does the study answer a clinically important question? If the study is about
treatment for otitis media but the endpoint of the study is tympanometry
measurement improvement. Whilst this might be an indicator of improvement,
clinically this is not usually measured or important, important clinical outcomes
would be improvement of ear pain and pressure.
● When discussing study findings in your articles you need to be balanced, not just report
the positive outcome but also report any limitations of the study. This is especially
important in meta-analyses, there should be some comment on the quality of the studies
included in the meta-analysis
● Try and combine information for studies in different health systems, to minimise bias.
US - individualised (user pays/private) V UK/Australia/Canada/Scandinavia - socialised
(universal health care) systems.

Style Tips
● Write articles using google docs or microsoft word.
● Generic names for medications should be used, exceptions to this are where the
medication is very well known by its brand name and this name is the common usage
term within the medical community. Eg. Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone®)
● Hyperlinks - during the editing process we will hyperlink to other disease, drug and
procedure articles - you can make suggestions for this in your writing by underlining the
text and adding a comment about hyperlink to a certain published Alomedika article
(these can include: penyakit, obat, tindakan medis and CME articles).
● Minimize use of bullet point lists, use when helpful for the reader to understand a sub
section

Picture/Diagram Guide
● Disease article 3-5 pictures
● Drug 0 picture
● Procedure 1-2 pictures
● Due to copyright we cannot use most photos or diagrams for our sources.
● If you find an open access source (that can be use for commercial purpose) for a
diagram or photo this can be included in your article, as can photographs or diagrams
that you have created yourself. If using your own clinical photographs from your clinical
work - please ensure patients details or identifying features are removed or covered to
protect your patient’s privacy.
○ Use https://openi.nlm.nih.gov/ to find open access photo that can be included in
your article but you must click the attribution option first (so all the picture found
will only be the open access for commercial purpose pictures)

Sources
● If using journal articles as sources, please make a critical appraisal of the article and
ensure that it is from a reputable journal (especially for journal articles from source which
are not listed in the source list). See above “Interpretation of Journal Articles (Primary
Sources) and Use of Statistics in Articles”.
● If using a secondary source (websites such as Medscape), please review their editorial
policy first, ensure that their information is from verifiable sources (should have a
reference list) and that they are producing articles with minimal bias.
● Information should NOT be sourced from commercial websites including: e-commerce
sites, company websites(including pharmaceutical companies) or company sponsored
websites). Also do not source from our Indonesian competitor websites.
● Please use the most up to date information you can find.
● If an area is controversial (as often occurs in medicine) then state that this particular
treatment (or procedure or surgery) is controversial and present a balanced discussion
of the controversy. We do not want to produce “recipe cards” for medicine (eg. we do
not want - Disease X is investigated with tests A,B and C, and treated with medicine Z
and Y).
● If you are having difficulty finding or accessing sources then please contact the editorial
team for assistance with this. If you are unsure whether a source is appropriate to use,
then also ask to Alomedika editorial team.
