Guidelines and Style Guide For Alomedika - Rev 2019
Audience
Articles are written for healthcare professionals in Indonesia, with the main target audience
being young GP doctors. Remember to keep the article relevant with Indonesian people and
condition.
Keep in mind this is a web based platform and we assume doctors and other health professional
are likely to use this as a reference tool. They are therefore unlikely to read the article from start
to finish, but may just concentrate on the section they are interested in. They may be reading
from their smartphone, tablet or laptop so formating needs to be clear and liberal use of sub
pages and subheadings will help our users target the section they are looking for.
General Format
1. Title - Arial Font size 23, bold
2. Section title are in Arial size 12 font and bold, put space before section title
3. Headings are in Arial size 12 font and bold, Sentence Case, put space before
subheadings but no space between subheading and the following text
a. Subheadings are in Arial size 12 font and underlined, Sentence Case, put space
before subheadings but no space between subheading and the following text
b. Subsubheadings are in Arial size 12 font, Sentence Case, with colon sign (:)
i. e.g. CT Scan:
4. Single spacing, normal word margin (1-1-1-1), justify alignment
5. No space between paragraph
6. English words/phrase following Indonesian word/phrase - should be in () brackets and in
italics eg. emboli paru (pulmonary embolism / PE) unless it’s in heading
7. Words in another language (most commonly English words) that are in the text of the
article should be in italics unless it’s in heading.
8. Species names (such as the name of insects, bacteria etc.) should be in italics eg.
Aedes aegypti
9. Table/diagram is center align, title below Arial size 10, table heading Arial size 10 center
align, table/diagram text Arial size 10 left align. Because of copyright issue, you must
make your own table/diagram (See Style tips)
10. Abbreviation must be written in full name in every section
11. Every section must have at least 1 reference
12. Articles will be assigned as long and short articles. Topic needs to be covered
comprehensively, do not add unnecessary text to meet a word count. If article is overly
long ensure that material that is not directly related to the topic is not included
(remember you can hyperlink to other articles if the reader would want more detail
about a disease, drug or procedure).

In total of more than 10 references for long articles. (in some difficult cases where
reference is scarce, you can you less than 10 references)
Where relevant, should cover the following sections and headings:
● Pendahuluan

● Kontraindikasi
● Teknik
○ Persiapan Pasien
○ Peralatan
○ Posisi Pasien
○ Prosedural
○ Follow up

● Address a specific clinical question
● Straight to the point e.g. if you write about oral salbutamol for asthma, don’t explain too
much about asthma and the therapy (because we’ll link it to the asthma disease article).
Get straight to the point of oral salbutamol efficacy/pros-cons/controversy for asthma
patient.
● Discuss pros and cons, or differing viewpoints that might exist in medicine e.g.
Oral salbutamol->cons: ineffective, should be stop; pros:cheap, more available than the
inhaler.. Discuss about these pros and cons and whether we should stop oral salbutamol
usage or not
● Minimum 5 references - aiming to use the most up to date resources to provide the best
evidenced based medicine on this subject
● Use bullet points where required to allow for easy reading of the article for doctors
wanting to get a quick answer
● Once published some of these articles will be able to be commented on by website
members
● Balanced: ex appendicogram: not recommended because of low accuracy and high risk
but in developing countries like Indonesia, USG aren’t available everywhere and very
operator-dependent so appendicogram still have its place for appendicitis diagnosis
● Various countries: not America-centric->UK/Australia/Europe
Acceptable Sources
Here are the list of acceptable sources for writing Alomedika article:
● Priority 1: Recent primary sources (journal articles): the latest 5 years. Need to appraise
the information to make sure that it’s valid. Beware of predatory journal article (See
section Interpretation of Journal Articles (Primary Sources) and Use of Statistics in
Articles)
● Priority 2: secondary sources such as Medscape
● Priority 3: older journal article: >5 years old
● Only if there are no other sources: Textbook (please try not to use textbook and if
needed, only use one that you can find online, max 1 year before)
● Nonmedical source: Nonmedical source can only be use for patient education. Prioritize
sources from medical organization or government such as AHA or AAFP, Kemenkes,
IDAI, and if not available you can use source from hospital
Referencing Guide
Please see referencing guide for Numbered referencing system below
http://www.deakin.edu.au/students/studying/study-support/referencing/numbered-citation
Style Tips
● Write articles using google docs or microsoft word.
● Generic names for medications should be used, exceptions to this are where the
medication is very well known by its brand name and this name is the common usage
term within the medical community. Eg. Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone®)
● Hyperlinks - during the editing process we will hyperlink to other disease, drug and
procedure articles - you can make suggestions for this in your writing by underlining the
text and adding a comment about hyperlink to a certain published Alomedika article
(these can include: penyakit, obat, tindakan medis and CME articles).
● Minimize use of bullet point lists, use when helpful for the reader to understand a sub
section
Picture/Diagram Guide
● Disease article 3-5 pictures
● Drug 0 picture
● Procedure 1-2 pictures
● Due to copyright we cannot use most photos or diagrams for our sources.
● If you find an open access source (that can be use for commercial purpose) for a
diagram or photo this can be included in your article, as can photographs or diagrams
that you have created yourself. If using your own clinical photographs from your clinical
work - please ensure patients details or identifying features are removed or covered to
protect your patient’s privacy.
○ Use https://openi.nlm.nih.gov/ to find open access photo that can be included in
your article but you must click the attribution option first (so all the picture found
will only be the open access for commercial purpose pictures)
