ABSTRACT
Children after losing their parents go through a very difficult situation. Most of them
suffer from mental and psychological issues in their life. Orphan children live in
institutional buildings where they may develop these psychological problems – they
go through stages of sorrow, depression, and anxiety and feel a lack of support in
their life.
This study seeks to find the impact architecture has on the mental well-being of an
orphan and its influence on the level of emotional intelligence. The research aims to
produce methods through which architecture and its spaces alleviate the problems
faced by an orphan.
The research goes through different stages like literature review and case study of
residential settings for orphans. The research takes into consideration the user’s
needs into consideration by conducting a comparative analysis. Different angles
contained in the study are child-friendly household living, adult supervision, open-air
green spaces, community living, and intimate and hiding spaces. At the end of this
study, a few guidelines on design shall be provided which could be adopted to
provide a sense of togetherness and eliminate the feeling of alienation.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

Aim

To explore the relationship between architecture and the mental health of children in
residential care

Objectives

1. To perform a review of the literature of existing architectural evidence on how

architecture affects a child’s psychological health.
2. to find distinctive architectural elements that are connected to emotional
intelligence and well-being in residential care environments.
3. to survey or interview orphans living in various kinds of orphanages to learn how
they perceive their surroundings and how that affects their mental health.
4. To compare and evaluate the data gathered in order to find any connections
between emotional intelligence, mental health, and architecture.

SCOPE

The report centres on examining how physical factors, such as room size and configuration,
natural light and ventilation, and others, can affect orphan children's emotional intelligence.
The research also focuses on how lighting and colour schemes may impact children
between the ages of 6 and 18 in terms of mood and general well-being. The research would
not take into account how the interaction between peers or staff would affect how
architectural spaces are used or perceived.

LIMITATION

1. The study is limited to the application in tropical climate of India.

2. This research is limited to developing a scheme to guide the design of orphanages in
India and will not be providing with rigorous detail on design interventions.
3. The data collected might be limited due to the prevalence of ignorance among people
about mental health conditions , especially in kids and teenagers.
4. Potential confounding variables like age, gender, and socioeconomic position could
have an impact on the study's results. The responses of orphans from various
backgrounds and experiences to the orphanage's architecture might vary, making it
difficult to make broad inferences.
5. The research may be limited by unmeasured factors, such as genetics, individual
differences, or exposure to trauma or abuse, that could have an impact on emotional
intelligence and mental health.

RESEARCH QUESTION
How does the physical environment of residential care units affect the emotional intelligence
of children between the age of 6-18yrs old .
