Get to Know the History of the NPEO (National Polytechnic English Olympics)

Competition

The National Polytechnic

English Olympics (NPEO) is
an English competition held for
Polytechnic students
throughout Indonesia.
According to the advisor of this
event, Mr. I Nyoman Radjin
Aryana said, "There are many
Polytechnics in Indonesia, as a
community, of course, there must be a competition that can provide space for our students
to develop.” And the choice of English as one of the skills that are prioritized on the
abilities of vocational students, and as a medium to provide space for students to be
chosen. Another reason why giving English as a medium is learning English vocational
courses, so English is chosen as the medium use in the NPEO competition.

In addition, the purpose of implementing this competition are to create a competitive

climate; improve critical thinking skills; improve spoken English mastery; and increase the
competitiveness of Polytechnic graduates through English-language media. And according
to Mr. Nyoman, before the NPEO competition was held, a competition called the National
Polytechnic English Debate Competition (NPEDC) was held before, he revealed, "When
talking about NPEO it can't be separated from NPEDC, before becoming an NPEO it was
called the National Polytechnic English Debate Competition. (NPEDC), it was first held in
2001, started running until 2005, then stopped in 2007 and there was 2009, 2010, 2011,
2012.” After 2012 this branch was only developed, not just debate only field, but starting
to open the eyes of other competitions, namely speech, news casting, writing and
storytelling. Finally, the first NPEO competition was held in 2013 at the Politeknik
Perkapalan Negeri Surabaya (PPNS).

Then, the interesting thing about NPEO is, it turns out that it is not necessarily the
winner who will host the next NPEO, because the one who determines the host in this
NPEO competition is under the authority of BAKORMA (Coordination Board for
Polytechnic students throughout Indonesia). However, there are usually polytechnics that
offer their own or designated Polytechnics, at the BAKORMA meeting, which includes
the Deputy Director III, the student representative. Mr. Nyoman added, "So at the meeting,
it will be discussed which Polytechnic will be considered more ready. It is not necessarily
the one who becomes the winner who will host the next NPEO, there is no such clause."
Mr. Nyoman said. Saturday (11/06/22)
