Following the collapse of the Maratha Empire, many Maratha families and states became

vassals in a subsidiary alliance with the British, forming the biggest group of princely states
in the British Raj in terms of area and people. [citation required] After the First Anglo-Sikh
War in 1846, the British government gave Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh under the
conditions of the Treaty of Amritsar, and the Dogra family established the princely state of
Jammu and Kashmir, the second-largest princely state in British India. [362][363] While in
Eastern and Northeastern India, the British seized the Hindu and Buddhist states of Cooch
Behar Kingdom, Twipra Kingdom, and Kingdom of Sikkim and made them subordinate
princely states.
