    The Maratha Kingdom was an empire in India that controlled much of the Indian peninsula at its height in 1760, extending from South India to modern-day Pakistan. It was established and expanded by Chatrapati Shivaji, a Maratha aristocrat, and ruled by the Peshwa dynasty from Pune's Shaniwarwada Palace Fort until 1818. Peshwa Bajirao I turned the Marathas into a powerful force nationally and is considered by some historians to be the second founder of the Maratha Kingdom.

    At its height in 1760, the Maratha Empire controlled a large portion of the Indian peninsula,
    extending from South India to modern-day Pakistan (yellow region).

    The Peshwa dynasty ruled the Maratha Empire from Pune's Shaniwarwada Palace Fort until
    1818.

    Chatrapati Shivaji, a member of the Bhonsle tribe and a Maratha aristocrat, established and
    expanded the Maratha empire.

    into a powerful force on the national stage. Bajirao I "may very well be viewed as the second
    founder of the Maratha Kingdom," according to historian K.K. Datta. [344]
