Sharrow Lantern Festival
The Sharrow Lantern Carnival is an annual community arts event, free and family focused. It’s a fantastic
explosion of colour and creativity. Several thousand people attend and there are hundreds of hand-made
lanterns that parade through the streets of Sharrow, engaging and delighting all ages. It’s a time to make
something amazing with your kids, dance in the street with your friends and share a magical experience
with your neighbours. It’s completely run by volunteers, support from local organisations and donations
from the public.
There are two main ways to volunteer:
 Join our Workshop Delivery Team and help families make lanterns.
 Join our Carnival Day Team and make sure the event is safe and fun for everyone.

Workshop Delivery Team – Facilitator Role

During February and March, we run lantern making

workshops that are free for the public to attend. We need
Facilitators to help families make lanterns. You don't need
experience in making lanterns! It's really easy, we will teach
you at a training session. You will be part of a team, so there
will always be more experienced volunteers in the room. The
main purpose of the role is to encourage others to be
creative. You do need to be confident in talking to strangers,
friendly and welcoming. It’s best if you are a little bit arty and
crafty. It’s always fun, and usually sticky. All children are
accompanied by adults so you will not be responsible for
anyone. You do not need a DBS or experience with children.
You don’t need to commit to helping at all the workshops, but
you need to be good at communicating, to tell us if you are available or not, so we can plan.
Weekend workshops are on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1-5pm. Evening workshops are on Tuesdays 5-
8pm. You’ll need to arrive a little earlier for setting up and leave a little later for tidying up.

Carnival Day Team – Steward Role

The day of the event is April 3rd 2022. The crowd gather at
Mount Pleasant Park, then walk in a parade to the
Cemetery Park where there is live music and fire dancers.
Stewards are needed to make sure everyone feels welcome
and stays safe. Stewards work together in pairs, circulating
within the crowd, and walking alongside the parade. They
answer questions from the public, and make the event
feel organised and safe. Stewards need to be super friendly,
happy to talk to strangers. Experience is not needed. We
will have a short meeting all together, the ‘Stewards
Briefing’ before the event to explain procedures such as lost
children and first aid. The Police will be with us, and any very difficult issues will be referred to them. At the
end of the parade Stewards will continue to circulate within the crowd during the live music, making sure
people are safe, and picking litter.

Further details can be found here: www.sharrowlanterncarnival.org/volunteer

Please email if you are interested in these roles, or have any questions: sharrowlanterns@gmail.com

Transport 17
Transport 17 is a small, friendly, caring community organisation which has existed
since 1984 to provide accessible transport to lunch and social clubs for those who
would otherwise not be able to get out and about. Transport 17 makes a
difference to people’s lives as we give our passengers an opportunity to meet up
with old friends and make new ones, to share a good lunch and enjoy a game or a
film. We rely entirely on volunteers to drive the minibuses, assist our passengers,
run the management committee, raise funds and organise events. If you have
some time to spare and you’d like to help others in your local community by
doing any of the below roles, please do get in touch with us.

Volunteer Minibus Driver

Could you drive the minibuses that provide a door-to-door transport
service for older people to local lunch and social clubs? We’re looking
for volunteers who are over 21 and who have held a current driving
licence (including category D1) for at least 2 years with no convictions.
If you’re friendly, enjoy helping people, and are tolerant to people's
diverse needs, we’d love to hear from you.

Volunteer Passenger Assistant

This role involves providing assistance to older people who are less
mobile, helping them from their home, on and off the bus and into the venue. The passenger assistant
works alongside the driver and ensures passengers are comfortable while travelling. No specific skills are
needed but we’re looking for volunteers who are friendly, enjoy helping people, and are tolerant to
people's diverse needs.
We have lots of other opportunities to volunteer at Transport 17, including helping with fundraising,
office/administration work, DIY/building repairs, social media/IT input, planning and organising events, and
writing articles for local publications. We welcome volunteers who would like to help regularly each week,
and also those who are able to offer some time on a more flexible basis.
Our volunteers say:
“I just love doing this as I know what a difference it makes.”
“It is really good to be helping people to get out, to have a chat with them and to know that they are
having a good time.”

What’s in it for you?

Volunteering with Transport 17 gives you the opportunity to help others in your local community and gain
experience working with older adults, some of whom have physical and/or mental health difficulties,
including dementia. Volunteering with us will give you regular social contact, a routine to your week
and/or an opportunity to develop skills which might enable you to pursue the career of your choice.
Trustee
Join our Board of Trustees in 2022 and be part of the next exciting stage in the provision of our community
transport services. We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about helping others in order to
reduce social isolation. We are especially keen to encourage applications from people of all ages to bring
new energy and a fresh perspective into the organisation. You do not need previous Trustee or committee
experience.
To find out more about volunteering at Transport 17, please contact Fiona Smith on

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I volunteer?
Anyone can volunteer. People already in employment, full-time or part-time, refugees and asylum
seekers, retired, students, unemployed and anyone else not mentioned here. Really, volunteering is
for everyone.

When can I start?

It can take a few weeks for you to go through the application and recruitment process. The one thing
that often takes the most time is the DBS police check (formerly CRB), though not all volunteering
requires a police check.

What about my expenses?

Organisations should pay your travel and out of pocket expenses. To be registered with us we require
this. Please contact us if you have had difficulty securing these expenses.

Do I need particular skills to volunteer?

Sometimes, depending on the voluntary role. But very often no particular skill is required; the
organisation will give you the right training for your role.

How soon might I be able to find a paid job after I volunteer?

There is no guarantee that volunteering will lead to paid employment. But you will get a lot out of
volunteering including new skills, experience and confidence, which can help with job prospects.

Will I get any support as a volunteer?

You should be given an induction when you start, training that is relevant to your role and
catch-ups or supervisions relevant to your role.

I am an asylum seeker - am I allowed to volunteer?

Yes - you can volunteer as many hours as you want. There are no restrictions on asylum seekers
volunteering. You are not allowed to do ‘unpaid work’ but volunteering is different.
You are allowed to volunteer in a charity. Ask us for more information.

I’m on benefits - can I volunteer without losing my benefits?

Yes, you can - plus volunteering is recognised as giving you a better chance of finding paid work. So,
you can volunteer as many hours as you like while you are on benefits, as long as you still meet the
terms for getting them. If you are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, this will mean you still need to
look for paid work and you must be free to start a job with one weeks’ notice.
It might be good to discuss your volunteering with your benefit agency so they are in the picture.

I am under 18 - can I volunteer?

Yes, you can. There are a range of opportunities set up for younger volunteers; you can download a
list of these from our website. If you need help doing this please call us on 0114 253 6649 or e-mail
vc@vas.org.uk

I have a criminal conviction - can I volunteer?

You can, and many people with criminal convictions do. It all depends on the nature of your
conviction, how recent it was, the kind of voluntary role you would like and the organisation where
you wish to volunteer.

Any other questions? Please call us on 0114 253 6649 (Mon – Thurs) or email vc@vas.org.uk
Rights and responsibilities
