Load Forecast
• Electrical power systems experience cycles since human activity follows
cycles.
• The total load on the system has a daily cycle:
• The total load will generally be higher during the daytime and early evening when
industrial loads are high, lights are on, and so forth.
• The total load will generally be lower during the late evening and early morning
when most of the population is asleep.

Central Question
• Can we just simply commit enough
units to cover the maximum system
load and leave them running?
• The problem with “commit enough
units and leave them on-line” is one of
economics.
• It is quite expensive to run too many
generating units.
• A great deal of money can be saved by
turning units off (decommitting them)
when they are not needed (when
demand is low).
Unit Commitment
• Unit refers to the generating unit.
• Commitment or to “commit” a generating unit is to “turn it on,” that is:
• to bring the unit up to speed
• synchronize it to the system, and
• connect it so it can deliver power to the network.

Example [Complete Enumeration Method]
Consider a three generator system with
𝐶 𝑃 = 561 + 7.92𝑃 + 0.001562𝑃
𝐶 𝑃 = 310 + 7.85𝑃 + 0.001940𝑃
𝐶 𝑃 = 93.6 + 9.564𝑃 + 0.005784𝑃
and 𝑃 = 550 𝑀𝑊.

• If I am to supply a load of 550 MW, what unit or combination of units should be used to
supply this load most economically?
• To solve this problem, simply try all combinations of the three units.
• If way too few units committed
• The combinations of units will be infeasible (i.e., failure to meet the load) if the sum of all maximum
MW for the units committed is less than the load.
• For each feasible combination, the units will be dispatched using the ED solution
techniques from previous lectures to obtain the optimal combination.
• Optimal combination will have minimum cost while meeting demand and all constraints.
