I. METHODOLOGY section, which was obtained on Tuesday, 12 October 2021

9:40:01 am and will expire on Wednesday, 13 October 2021
A. List of Materials utilized
9:40:01 am.
For this lab activity, the personal laptop was used to
enable the dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP).
B. Procedure
The main objective of this experiment was to introduce
the dynamic host configuration protocol and the process of
setting up a computer as a DHCP client. Methods such as
accessing the computer’s command prompt are done to
enable DHCP.
II. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
A. Establishing a network connection and accessing the
Command Prompt
To begin the activity, the laptop is connected to the home
Figure 3: Wireless LAN adapter W-Fi section showing the IPv4 lease
network as seen in Figure 1.
This shows that the IPv4 address of the laptop is
temporary and lasts 24 hours.
B. Accessing the Network Configuration Window to Enable
DHCP
To enable DHCP in the Laptop, the Wi-Fi properties of
the network was accessed to find the components labelled
“TCP/IP” as seen in Figure 4.

of the laptop.

This is needed in order to access the different network

details in the Command Prompt. Once the connection is
established, the command ipconfig /all is entered in
the Command Prompt as seen in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Command Prompt showing the results of ipconfig /all

The results show that the DHCP is running in the

network as it is enabled. It also shows the lease of the
laptop’s IPv4 address under the Wireless LAN adapter W-Fi
Figure 5: TCP/IPv6 Properties box.

The laptop is then restarted to make sure that DHCP is

already enabled. Figure 6 shows the results of
ipconfig /all in the Command Prompt. The DHCP
has been successfully enabled.

Figure 4: Wi-Fi Properties dialog box where TCP/IPv6 is selected

Once selected, the Properties button is selected to open

the properties window of the selected component. The
options “Obtain an IPv6 address automatically” and “Obtain
DNS server address automatically” are selected.

once DHCP is enabled.

C. Benefits of DHCP
Using a DHCP server automates the configuration and
reclamation of IP addresses for new computers by
maintaining a pool of IP addresses and leases an address to
any DHCP-enabled client. Because the IP addresses are
dynamic (leased) rather than static (permanently assigned),
addresses no longer in use are automatically returned to the
pool for reallocation.
