1. Ancient Egyptian
baking
The first acts of baking date back to
ancient Egyptian culture. They liked to
treat themselves to bread sweetened
with honey.

2. Fruitcakes for preserving


food
In medieval Europe, bakers often
made fruitcakes and gingerbread.
These could last for many months and
even improved with age.

3. 17th century iced cakes

When sugar was first introduced those


that could afford it mixed it with egg
whites to make cake icing. Iced cakes
were an upper class delicacy.

4. Layered buttercream
cakes
In the 19th century buttercream
frostings using butter, cream, and
powdered sugar began replacing
boiled icing. The first layered cake
was created by French chef Antonin
Careme.
