Activity 1: Chapter 1 NATURE OF ACADEMICS TEXTS

1. Evaluate three advertisements (on prints or TV). Find out if there are fallacies that are used
in those advertisement.
* COCA COLA

These ads say if you drink coke, you'll be happy. They want us to know that the bottle of coke
is happiness, which is not true.
* EXTRA
This is about couple who’s happily living. The implies that if we buy their gum, it will lead us
to more significant event.
*CORNETTO
The whole topic of this commercial was about a guy buying a DVD but instead we were
distracted by the cheapness of the ice cream.
2. Choose a news about recent national issue (an issue that has made it to the news headlines
in the past two weeks or so). As a critical reader, evaluate the news article and find out if there
are flaws in the way the article is presented. If possible, engage in a dialogue with the writers so
you can better evaluate the text.

ANSWER:
This news is about sugar stocks and prize here in the Philippines.
The price of sugar in some markets in the metro manila has risen as a
source of supply shortages. The price of sugar in the markets is now
more expensive by 2 pesos per kilogram. So far 67 pesos of brown
while 90 pesos of refined.
I didn't see anything wrong with the article I had read. All the
information I want to know about the rising sugar price in the
Philippines is contained there. The article is detailed, there is
evidence of why sugar prices have risen.
