Determination of Quality of Virgin Coconut Oil derived from Cocos nucifera

using Solvent Extractive Method with Methanol as Extractant
Last Name, FI MI., Last Name, FI., & Last Name, FI MI.1

ABSTRACT (around 200-250 words)

[introduction]. [Method]. [Results]. [Quality]. Include bits and pieces of each portion of your
report to develop your abstract.

Keywords (4-7 words): virgin coconut oil, cocos nucifera, solvent extraction, methanol

INTRODUCTION (around 400 words)

Background
Discuss the concept at hand; make sure to explain each element of the title. What do you have to say
about “quality”, “virgin coconut oil,” “Cocos nucifera,” “Solvent extractive method,” and methanol?
Review related literature (use at least 3 sources/journals). Follow APA format and indentation format for
all paragraphs.

Problem Statement
What do you wish to observe? Draw your objectives from the procedure delivered to you and the ones
you proposed. Include costing.

METHODOLOGY (around 800 words)

State what method you would employ. Solvent extractive method, for instance; what is involved? What is
the process involved (do not talk about the PRINCIPLE as it was already discussed in your introduction)?

Process and Equipment (more or less the heaviest part, around 600 words; do not forget to include
measurable values)

Start by outlining all the materials used in this order – raw material, lab apparatus, and other auxiliary
materials.

Then proceed with narrating what you did (past tense) and be specific. What did you do? What equipment
was used? For instance, how many mL of extractant was used? What was used in heating; Bunsen burner
or water bath? Be detailed and specific. What did you measure? The volume of oil extracted? Etc.

Did your extraction involve simple physical separation or did you use any chemical means (heating to
convert raw materials into products, etc)? Please state pertinent reactions. Sample:

Conversion of hydrogen to water involved the electrolytic reaction between hydrogen and oxygen as
outlined:

Quality Control

State what method of quality control was utilized. Include the process, equipment, and the calculations
involved (general formula, label each equation as (1), (2), etc ). This section should be uniform for all
groups. Sample:

Molarity was calculated using equation (2)

nsolute
M= (2)
v solution

The variables of the equation are as follows: M is the molarity (mol/L), n solute is the moles of solute (mol),
and vsolution is the volume of solution (L). Notice that you earlier presented a chemical equation then a
mathematical equation, but the mathematical equation is labeled as (2) instead of (1). Please take note.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION (around 200 words)

How much of your measurable value was attained? Did you meet your objectives? Were you able to
deliver what your process intended on delivering? What was the result of quality control operations?
What was the result of costing?

CONCLUSIONS (around 200 words)

What is the general message of the laboratory experiment? Include any responses to guide questions that
your professor may ask. Summarize your findings and examine what learning was derived based on your
problem statement and objectives from your introduction.

APPENDIX 1
Relevant Calculations

Appendix 1 is for your calculations. This always starts on a new page. Include all calculations relevant to
your process. How did you prepare your solvent for instance? How did you/others prepare the standard
solution for any quality control measures?

You will not be doing any handwritten calculation. All calculations will be done typewritten. Describe
your process of solving.

For instance:

The molarity of a certain solution was calculated using equation (2) with moles of solute equivalent to 4
moles and the volume of the solution equivalent to 4 L:

4 mol mol
N= =4 =4 M
4L L

The molarity was calculated to be 4 mol/L or 4 M.

APPENDIX 2
Laboratory Setup and Process Flow Visuals

This contains all the photos taken for each step of the process. This is the support material for your
methodology, so be sure to document each step appropriately. This should be done as a narrative
(chronological order) and follow APA formatting for figures. Be sure to maintain UNIFORM size of all
photos (landscape orientation)

The last photo of this appendix should be that of your product in the appropriate packaging. No need for
labels yet but please work on your presentation of the product.
