WHAT’S NEW

Directions: Read the problem carefully then answer the questions below.

Depreciation is defined as the loss in value that naturally happens as an object

is put to use or ages. One of the reasons why some objects depreciate in value is
simply because they have extremely short life span. Another, some objects will
eventually break down over the years and need to be replaced.
The table below shows how the value of a cellular phone purchased by Jean
Aiko decreases over several years.

Cellular Phone Value Years after Purchase

Php 20 000 2

Php 10 000 4

Questions:
1. What is the meaning of depreciation?
2. Give reasons why some objects lose its value over time?
3. From the table at the left, write a linear equation relating the years since the
cellular phone was purchased x and its value y in pesos. (hint: use two points)
4. What would be the cellular phone’s value 5 years after its purchase?
5. Find the purchase price of the cellular phone.

WHAT IS IT

Lesson 1: Point-Slope Form Equation of a Line

In the previous lesson, you have learned about the slope of a line. You have
also learned how to describe the slopes of lines mathematically and how to apply
them as rates of change. You also learned how to find the slope-intercept form of an
equation of a line, that is, y = mx + b, with slope m and y-intercept b.
Now you will explore ways to find the equation of the line when the slope and
a point on the line are given. Let's study the example below.

5
GRADE 8
Learning Module for Junior High School Mathematics
1
Example 1: Find an equation of the line through (2, 4) with slope .
3

Solution:
a) Locate point (2, 4) in a Cartesian plane.

b) From point (2,4), find another point on the line. Since the slope of the line
1
is , move one unit upward and 3 units to the right. At what point did you
3
stop? __________

𝑦−4
The slope from (2,4) to (𝑥, 𝑦) is 𝑚 =

but 𝑚=
3

so, = Multiply both sides by (𝑥 − 2).
3 𝑥−2
1 𝑦−4
(𝑥 − 2)( ) = ( )(𝑥 − 2) Simplify.
3 𝑥−2
1
𝑦 − 4 = (𝑥 − 2)
3

The equation is said to be in the point-slope form since this form of

the equation was generated using the coordinates of a known point other
than the y-intercept and the slope of the line.
So, the point-slope form of an equation of a line through the point (x 1,
y1) with slope m is written as:
𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙𝟏 )

6
GRADE 8
Learning Module for Junior High School Mathematics
We can use the point- slope form of an equation to find an equation of
a line when we know the slope and at least one point. Then, rewrite the
equation in a slope- intercept form. Let’s have more examples below.

Example 2
1
a) Find an equation of a line with slope m = − that contains the point (6, -4).
3

Write the equation in slope- intercept form.

Solution:
1
Step 1: Identify the slope. 𝑚 = −
3
Step 2: Identify the point. (6, −4)
𝑦 − 𝑦₁ = 𝑚 (𝑥 − 𝑥₁)
Step 3: Substitute the values 1
into the point- slope form, 𝑦 − (−4) = − ( 𝑥 – 6)
3
𝑦 − 𝑦₁ = 𝑚 (𝑥 − 𝑥₁). 1
𝑦+4 = − 𝑥 + 2
3

Step 4. Write the equation in 𝒚= − 𝒙 − 𝟐
slope- intercept form. 𝟑

b) Find the equation of a horizontal line that contains the point (-2, -6). Write
the equation in slope- intercept form.

Solution:

Step 1: Identify the slope. 𝑚 = 0

Step 2: Identify the point. (−2, −6)

𝑦 − 𝑦₁ = 𝑚 (𝑥 − 𝑥₁)
Step 3: Substitute the values 𝑦 − (−6) = 0(𝑥 – (−2)
into the point- slope form, 𝑦+6 = 0
𝑦 − 𝑦₁ = 𝑚 (𝑥 − 𝑥₁). 𝒚 = −𝟔

Step 4. Write the equation in It is in y- form, but could be

slope- intercept form. written as 𝒚 = 𝟎𝒙 – 𝟔.

Lesson 2: Two-Point Form Equation of a Line
So far, you have been using the equation of a line to find ordered pairs. But
suppose you know only the coordinates of two points. How could you find the
equation of the line that contains them? There is only one line that passes through
two given points. Thus, given two points, one can determine a line following these
steps:
▪ To write the equation of a line through two given points, use the slope-intercept
form of a line, y = mx + b,
▪ Find 𝒎 from the given coordinates, then, find 𝒃 by solving the equation.

Example 1
Find an equation of a line that contains the points (−3, −1) and (2, −2). Write the
equation in slope- intercept form.

Step 2: Choose one point. (2 , −2)
Step 3: Substitute the values 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚 (𝑥 − 𝑥1 )

𝑦 − (−2) = (𝑥 – 2)
𝑦₁ = 𝑚 (𝑥 − 𝑥₁). 5

Lesson 3: Slope-Intercept Form Equation of a Line

Slope- intercept form is a specific form of linear equation. It has the following
general structure 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃 where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept wherein
𝒎 and 𝒃 can be any real numbers.
We can easily determine the slope and intercept of a line if the equation is
written in slope- intercept form, 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃. Now we will do the reverse- we will start
with the slope and y- intercept and use them to find the equation of the line.

Example 1 Find the equation of a line with slope -9 and y- intercept -4.

Step 1: Identify the slope. −9

Step 2: Identify the y-intercept. −4

Step 3: Substitute the values 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏

into the slope-intercept form, 𝑦 = −9𝑥 + (−4)
𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 𝒚 = −𝟗𝒙 − 𝟒

Example 2 Find the equation of a line with y- intercept is 2 and slope is 0.

Step 1: Identify the slope. 0

Step 2: Identify the y-intercept. 2

Step 3: Substitute the values 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏

into the slope-intercept form, 𝑦 = 0𝑥 + 2
𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 𝒚=𝟐
