Chairman’s Desk
It has been my pleasure to serve as the Chairman of BIRDS
since 1991. This is a momentous period for BIRDS as we are
now celebrating “The Silver Jubilee Year”- 2016. BIRDS was
established to serve people from various walks of life especially
the weaker sections, the down-trodden, the poor, destitute,
women, children, small and marginal farmers to name a few.

I warmly congratulate all those involved in bringing the Society

into existence especially Mr. Paul Raja Rao, a close acquaintance of mine, whose
zeal and boundless energy made its birth possible and in the development of the
organization over the years. His relentless work, together with many devoted people
who were inspired by his leadership has made BIRDS what it is today.

We are proud to bring out this souvenir to commemorate BIRDS silver jubilee and
celebrate the many years of service that we have spent, nurturing people’s lives in
various dimensions and interventions of the poor and underprivileged people of our
country.

The strong and continuing presence of BIRDS in various states of India, underscores
the commitment of the organization and the good work it has done in transforming
people’s lives. BIRDS as an organization has grown leaps and bounds having handled
various developmental programmes and campaigning for social causes for betterment
of communities and society at large.

Looking back to the period between 1991 and 2016, we are filled with a deep sense
of satisfaction for having achieved a lot more than we initially envisioned.
Nevertheless, in all humbleness, we still feel that there is a lot more to be done.

I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to our several partners in development and

stakeholders who reposed their faith in us. I would like to express a big ‘thank you’
to all international and national donors, organizations, government bodies,

7
consultants, friends and well-wishers who have supported us through all the times
of thick and thin.

Together, I am sure the BIRDS family can forge ahead with confidence and faith and
rise to the many challenges ahead of us.

Warmly,

Dr. Madhukar Reddy

It is with great admiration that I have been watching the growth of BIRDS over a
period of last many years under the visionary leadership of Rev. Paul Raj Rao. From
a humble beginning of an organization that began with mobilizing marginalized
communities, especially women, it grew to be one that organizes and facilitates
bigger projects of Government and International agencies that have groundbreaking
significance in terms rural development. One such project, Andhra Pradesh Farmer
Managed Ground Water System, implemented through such instrumentalities as
Farmer Field Schools and Farmer Water Schools, was able to make significant
contributions to the empowerment of rural farming communities.

BIRDS combines the concerns of immediate sustenance of the rural poor, their holistic
development, their life in dignity, advocacy with the State to safe guard their human
rights and plug them into the resources of the State and Non-state actors. It has been
my joy to walk with BIRDS during a major part of its 25 year history and see it
flourish in its service to the most deprived and marginalized.

I pray and wish that BIRDS would have many more years of fruitful and relevant
service to people and this nation as we struggle with questions of development with
equity, sustainability and care for the mother earth.

MESSAGE
On the eve of Silver Jubilee Celebration, I extend my heartiest congratulations to
BIRDS Society, its past and present governing board members, hundreds of staff who
have been associated in various stages of the organisation’s evolution from a vision
to a big Institution. I will also like to express my sincere greetings to family members
of the various staff members who have supported their spouses to be part of a
movement to help the under-privileged, needy and deprived.
Valaperla Paul Raja Rao singularly has been responsible for creating BIRDS as an
institution of Knowledge and Centre for excellence in the area of “Participatory
Management of Natural Resources”. He has spent his youthful years in building an
institution that has acquired so much in such a short time.
Beginning as an organisation to counter social discrimination in the society and
mainstream the less privileged to be part of the development process, BIRDS over
the years has taken the initiative to support several other smaller NGO’s in the
country to come together, federate and emerge as a practical grass root level voice in
the area of natural resource management with special focus on managing groundwater
distress.
At a time when India is witnessing impact of global Climate Change, severe droughts,
floods, other natural disasters the relevance of Organisations like BIRDS becomes
relevant nationally as well as globally. May this celebration be a time for re-dedication
to promote innovative grass root research, as well build linkages with Policy Makers
to support decentralised local level governance from ensuring sustainability of natural
resources.
I deem it a privilege to send this message as well be part of the silver jubilee
celebrations.
My Congratulations and Greetings to V.Paul Raja Rao and the common people who
have played an important role in its growth.

I am delighted to learn that Bharathi Integrated Rural Development Society (BIRDS)
has completed twenty five years of community work and is celebrating its Silver
Jubilee. My association with BIRDS started in early 2003, towards the closure of the
APWELL Project. I and World Education my colleagues travelled to the BIRDS Training
Centre, which had just been established, at Muthyalapadu. The training centre was
located in a remote area on a piece of barren land with very basic facilities. Over the
next couple of years, BIRDS under the able leadership of Paul Raja Rao transformed
the training centre into an idyllic beauty, where we organized trainings for project
staff. Several of us associated with BIRDS very much love to come back to
Muthyalapadu to enjoy its peaceful environs and warm hospitality showered by BIRDS
Team. The environs provided an ideal setting for several of us to conceive and develop
successful models on water governance and climate change adaptation, which have
gained world recognition.

Aside from that, it was a great learning experience to see how the BIRDS Team
transformed the training centre to create new facilities to respond to the needs of
local communities surrounding Muthyalapadu. Today, BIRDS Farm is the ‘go to’
place for local communities. My community development experience has been further
enriched by the BIRDS holistic model of community outreach on issues related to
environment, health, education and community empowerment. This is a small slice
of the work that BIRDS does with local communities. Today, BIRDS and its partners
have taken their learnings and work to several states across India.

I cherish my association with BIRDS and will always remember my visits to

Muthyalapadu. Wishing the BIRDS Team and Mr. Paul Raja Rao the very best in
their continued efforts in engaging and transforming rural communities!

Humble regards,

Konda

MESSAGE
Respected Chairman and Executive Director and All Colleagues of BIRDS,

I am delighted that BIRDS is celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year. The BIRDS school
has a strong connection with BIRDS Society, since it was at the dream of our former
Founder Chairman, Late Sri M. C. Josiah.

The BIRDS has always demonstrated a high degree of commitment to the wellbeing
of society as a whole, and to that of its employees, in particular. The fact that Mr.
Paul Raja Rao invited the best teaching faculty to run a school in this remote area
reflects the immense concern that he had for the children of these villages. It also
confirms that akin to the values of our Founder, he too believed that a sound education
alone could help develop the future citizens of India, and make them worthy of our
great nation.

It is a matter of great pride that for the past 25 years, BIRDS School has done
commendable work in providing an excellent education to thousands of children.
The children of our employees too have benefited immensely from the facilities offered
by the school, and it is heartening that today, “BIRDS” not only occupy positions of
importance in society at large, but are making a positive contribution in a variety of
roles, all over the world.

I would like to compliment the Board members of BIRDS, Executive Director for his
restless work, the staff of various projects of BIRDS and the students and Teachers of
BIRDS School for having planned a series of delightful programmes, to commemorate
the Silver Jubilee of BIRDS. In doing so, BIRDS and its Intuitions are reaffirming its
commitment to maintaining the high standards of education and service which we
do for community, they are well known for, and of serving in India for long years
ahead.

I wish you all well a very best,

V.S.S Sindhura

I have been a friend of BIRDS for 15-years and I am so impressed
with their work and purpose. If one could count that high they
have served probably served well over one million of the poor
over the past 25-years, particularly the Dalit women. Job well
done Brother Paul. Congratulations and best wishes for 25
more!

BIRDS has been a dear and important place for us for many years. From the first time
that we've visited, we have been struck by the boundless dedication of Paul, the
quiet service of the staff, and the joy that we see on the faces of the children in the
school and home. For several
years we had the privilege of
partnering with BIRDS in their
child sponsorship program, and
were so glad to be able to share
the lives of the children of BIRDS
with sponsors here in the US and
around the world. The work of
BIRDS is critical, and the people
of BIRDS are a joy and an honor
to know and to work with. Many
congratulations on the occasion of
this Silver Jubilee, and may your
work continue for many years into
the future.

My Journey with BIRDS…...

My Name is VGN Jayaprada and working as a Project Coordinator for Compassion

International in Peapuly for the last two years. I Joined BIRDS in the year 2006 as a
field staff on APFAMG Project and later worked in the capacity of Project Coordinator
in different projects implemented by BIRDS. Commitment levels of BIRDS and its
Executive Director Mr. Paul Rajarao garu inspired me a lot and I feel proud for being
associated with BIRDS.

Working with farmers, women, and children for good cause and empowering them
on their rights, duties is very much enriching experience to me.Whenever think of
my nature of work, I feel proud that “I am also part of “Community development,
social work” through BIRDS. Good work environment, support from Nodal office
helped me deliver expected project outputs on time. ED-BIRDS is always supportive
and I noticed that he ensures project staff comfort and happiness in all the projects
being implemented by BIRDS. I am so thankful to BIRDS management and our ED
garu for giving me this opportunity to work for BIRDS. I keep the same spirit and
commitment levels and look forward for longer association with BIRDS.

BIRDS - Allagadda

My Experiences with BIRDS......

My name is Shaik Abdulkhadar and I am working for Water Governance project in

the position of Project Coordinator for the past one year. Actually my association
with BIRDS started long back in 2005 when I joined as Agriculture Facilitator during
APFAMGS Project in DIPA organisation, which is the partner NGO of BIRDS.
Thankful to BIRDS & DIPA for providing the opportunity to work for SPACC and
Chethana Projects also.

BIRDS did excellent performance of supporting the down trodden community in the
process of improving their livelihoods. Inspired a lot with the dedication of Executive
Director Paul Sir towards the service of farmers, especially small and marginal farmers.
I am lucky enough to get the opportunity of imparting the chemicals free cultivation
skills to farmers as a staff of BIRDS. Along with Ground Water users of 9 drought
prone districts I too learned geology, hydrology and confident answering the queries
of farmers related to hydrology ( Even though my back ground is Agricultural Sciences).

Working environment here is so good and every staff irrespective of their position
getting the opportunity to implement their thought. Very much thankful to our beloved
Executive Director Paul Sir for giving me the opportunity to work for BIRDS and
support he rendered at each and every step. I look forward for longer association
with BIRDS.

Hearty congratulations to BIRDS & Paul Sir on the occasion of Silver Jubilee
Celebrations.

Child Development Facilitator

I am so glad to celebrate the silver jubilee of our BIRDS

organization. I am so blessed that I am the part of this organization
from the last 9 years. I had great experience of working with the little children, who
were orphans and I saw them grow here in the fear of the lord and many of those
children grown up and finished their education in different fields like engineering,
teaching, medical and other fields. This is the vision of Paul sir which is fulfilled by
these children of our BIRDS organization .Here they learned about moral values and
how to live their life. Independently and also they turned as a testimony to many
other people around them and of this society. I am worked here to help the children
who came from different villages who were poor. They received not only nutritious
food in the evening hours but also many were healed of many sicknesses our
organization provides for their medical purpose. I am really thankful to BIRDS
organization and our sir Paul Garu who gave opportunity to work to reach the children
who are in need. I am also thankful to all my staff members who helped worked with
me. Finally I am thankful to lord who gave me this opportunity to be a part of this
work of him. And I pray that this organization will be more blessing to this world in
the coming years

Thanks to all

Respected All

A Big Appreciation to the Management, Staff, Children and Community on Occasion

of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations !

BIRDS Society and School, today symbolises commitment to the attainment of all-
round educational excellence,

The Silver Jubilee of the Organisation is, therefore, an occasion of much joy for us as
we have been partners with the school over the past five decades in this endeavour.

In the span of Six years the school has supported its pupils by providing them
opportunities and challenges that have enabled them to inculcate in themselves values
of concern, commitment and service, together with a sharp intellect honed with
knowledge and understanding.

As the BIRDS and school community renews its commitment in the service of the
nation’s future through quality educational endeavours, I am happy to extend my
good wishes and support.

LIFE THROUGH BIRDS

BIRDS- Compassion International Project, Kalachatla, Kurnool District

My Name is Thimmanna and my wife name is Ramanjinamma. We have one son

and daughter. We have been living in Kalauchatla Village of Peapuly Mandal of
Kurnool District. We are poor and depend on daily wage labour.

In the year 2012, Compassion International project started through BIRDS and my
children are part of the project. Project is providing good nutritional food, teaching
good habits, conducting tuitions and health care. During the medical campaign held
at Village, Doctor diagnosed that my daughter is suffering from Thalassemia. We
were informed that it’s difficult for our daughter to survive. This is a sudden shock
and me and my wife’s agony is unexplained. As we are dependent on daily wage,
we don’t have enough money to get her operated.

But God knocked my door through BIRDS and took the care of my daughter and
admitted her in CMC Hospital, Vellore, which is a world class hospital and best
hospital in Asia. BIRDS compassion gave life back to my daughter and how can I
explain my joy and gratitude!! Five Lakh rupees were spent by Compassion
International through BIRDS towards operation and medical expenses. The “Life”
“Education” and “Nutritious food” was a dream for my daughter and is fulfilled through
BIRDS. I will be ever grateful to Mr Paul Rajarao garu, ED-BIRDS and Project staff at
Kaluchatla.

SINGLE BUT STRONG

I am Sarveswara
Kumari. I am 45 year
old single mother with
two sons and old
parents. I am the sole
care taker and bread
winner of the family as
my husband deserted
me 15 years ago. I have
many responsibilities at
home and farm. In
addition to this I rear
buffaloes.

NGO BIRDS initiated

APFAMGS project in my village. (Pedda Valla Nalva Kalva falling under Narsireddy
Pallevagu hydrological unit) I was impressed by the project and volunteered to be a
data recorder. I participated in training programmes and learnt to measure groundwater
levels in bore well. I take measurements every fortnight; I enter data in my record
book and also on display board.

I discontinued my studies long back; I studied to class 7 only. My villagers elected

me as GMC secretary. I record the minutes very carefully. I participate actively in all
programmes and encourage women to follow example. I travel to distant places to
be a resource person. As a secretary of GMC and as a Farmer Field School facilitator.
I do my job very honestly. In recognition of my efforts our Hydrological Unit Network
elected me as their Secretary.

I understood the relationships between rainfall, groundwater recharge, the types of

crops and methods of irrigation etc. I participated in crop water budget workshop. I
realized the importance of groundwater management as an individual farmer and as
community. I continue my work in different capacities to disseminate knowledge on
groundwater monitoring.

93
A TEACHER BUT A HUMBLE STUDENT

I am Venkata Narayan from Chinaganipalle village

Racherla mandal4 in Palamotu drainage area. I have
passed graduation and have long been employed
as a school teacher. Even as a teacher I have been
interested in Agriculture. I have always been trying
to learn more and more about irrigation, various
crops, water use, pesticides and fertilizers. I have
always used all opportunities to talk about all these
issues in my class although they were never part of the syllabus I am paid to teach. I
have always found that in village schools the teacher always ends up learning as
most children have to extend their hand in farming or any other occupation of their
parents. Thus the rural school children have good exposure to the family skills be it
weaving, making agricultural tools, carpentry, oil mills or farming. Thus whenever I
got time I opened up discussions on new issues and ended by being the net gainer of
knowledge.
In one such discussion, I came to understand that a new project has been launched
in the village that talks about safeguarding the precious groundwater resources. I did
not want to waste time I enquired and was told that the farmers have been organised
to take up technical tasks of recording important parameters like groundwater levels,
pumping rate, and rainfall and so on. I always believed that the farmers are adopting
various irrigation techniques without any clear understanding of the resource
availability. I began to keenly follow the activities of the committee and in course of
time became the vice president of the committee. Then one day I was invited to
explain the committee activities to the entire village. I took it as a privilege to do this,
however what I was telling was in fact new learning. Here I was seen by others as a
teacher who in fact was a humble student learning from other committee members
and the project.
Next opportunity came to me while presenting the consolidated data from the entire
Palamotu Hydrological Unit to all the farmers drawn from eight habitations forming
part of the hydrological unit. For the first time Crop Water Budgeting excreise balance
was carried out and I was shocked when it came out that in our basin the groundwater
use by farmers exceeds the availability, by almost 150 times. The recharge to the
wells is insignificant and some thing had to be done at earliest otherwise all wells
will dry up. I on my part took up low water requirement rice cultivation called as SRI
rice and have been canvassing for it all across the eight villages.

94
Rameswari: FCS improved my existing practices in rice cultivation

My name is Rameswari. After my marriage with Mr. B Pedda Hussain reddy, I came
to R Kothuru Village of Rudravaram Mandal and have been living in R Kothuru for
the past 12 years. Since my marriage, I grow rice crop in Kharif as my land is under
tank (Rudravaram cheruvu). I used to apply more number of chemical fertilizers and
pesticides for proper growth and good yield and hence more investment. However,
low yields and discouraging Minimum Support Price led me to live in financial debts.

In the year 2012 Bharathi Integrated Rural Development Society (BIRDS) organized
Farmers Climate School (FCS). Many farmers attended for these schools from our
village. Through some of FCS participants of my village, I come to know that we
need to grow crops by considering the climate variability, as the changes in the
weather has greater impact on Crop production.

So, I have decided to attend Farmer Climate Schools and gave my consent to test the
innovative, climate resilient agricultural practices in rice crop, in my own ½ acre
land. BIRDS-SPACC provided technical support and few inputs to grow rice crop in
a ½ acre land and in another ½ Acre I practiced regular farmer practices.

I made regular field visits and

observed the crop growth,
incidence of pest and soil
moisture. To my surprise, crop
growth in the pilot plot is on par
with the farmer plot and no pest
is seen in the pilot plot. In my
practice plot, I have seen the pest
and diseases particularly green leaf
hopper, white flies, stem borer and
leaf folder. I was advised to spray
only botanical extracts like Vailaku
Kashayam and Non-Pesticide
Management methods like Bramhastram, and Agni-astram with pseudomonas to
control the pest. I observed these extracts controlled the pests and diseases effectively
which were prepared at home with low cost, than Chemical sprays.

95
FCS participants and co-farmers
in my village were observing
my field every fortnight and
opined that, the practices are
good and cost effective and can
cope with climate change.

I am very happy with the low

investment practices like seed
treatment, seedling treatment
and application of neem cake
which improved my soil
health. I decided not to spray
any chemical and avoid
chemical pesticides. By utilizing locally available resources and materials I will
grow rice crop in the next season and continue in the coming years.
