4 a) A circle C is defined by the equation x2 + y2 − 6x − 4y + 4 = 0

i) Show that the centre and the radius of circle, C, are (3, 2) and 3
Respectively (3 marks)

Solution

x2 + y2 − 6x − 4y + 4 = 0

2f =− 6 2g = − 4 c=4

f =− 3 g = −2

Centre −, −  = 3, 2

Radius 2 + 2 −  = −3 2 + −2 2 −4= 9+4−4= 9=3

ii) a) Find the equation of the normal to the circle C at the point (6, 2)
( 3 marks)

Solution

Normal is perpendicular to a tangent

Radius is perpendicular to a tangent

(3, 2) (6, 2)

The equation of the normal is the line y = 2

The equation of the tangent is the line x = 6
